St George, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops managed to take the finale to avoid a three-game sweep to the Archers and maintain their hold on first place in the ML West as the season winds down.
St George dominated the opener, winning 7-0 behind a two-hit complete game shutout from Taylor Austin. The Archers hit three home runs as they kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
Chris Taylor got things going for the Archers in the first inning with a two run home run off of Juro Yamaguchi. A throwing error from shortstop Isaac Nettles allowed the Archers to add a run in the third to go up 3-0.
Rookie Dave Mazzoli, just called up on September 1st, hit a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 5-0. Mazzoli would go 3 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs in the game.
In the sixth Sam Robinson homered and Mazzoli lined a two-out RBI single to extend the St George lead to 7-0. Taylor Austin (9-12) went the distance for the Archers, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 without issuing a walk.
Juro Yamaguchi (9-12) took the loss. He allowed seven runs on ten hits in six innings of work. Yamaguchi was (7-3) on June 21st, but has been a liability since then, going (2-9). The Hops shelled out $58M on a three-year deal for him this past offseason.
On Saturday afternoon, the Archers rallied for a 6-5 victory. A Harper Reyes sixth inning solo home run off of Alex Farmer was the difference as St George won to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.
The Hops grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second on a two-run home run from Donnie Roland, his 13th, and throwing error from catcher Gomez, that allowed Oscar Aleman to score. Gomez would get that one back with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the second.
The Archers would then take the lead in the third on a three-run home run from Chris Taylor, his 27th on the season.
An RBI single from Isaac Nettles and an RBI double from Robbie Westbrook in the top of the fourth put the Hops back in front 5-4. But a Scottie Hagar sol shot in the bottom half tied it back up at 5-5.
That setup Harper Reyes to put the Archers up with the solo home run in the sixth, his 23rd on the season.
Alex Farmer (10-11) took the loss, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking one. Russell Fluty got the final eight outs coming in from the bullpen, allowing just one hit.
League ERA leader Lamont Lawrence only lasted 3 1/3 innings for St George. He allowed five run son nine hits. But the St George bullpen did not allow a run over the final 5 2/3 innings. The Hops stranded ten runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings.
In Sunday’s finale, Ramon Garcia carried a no hitter into the eighth inning before allowing a one out single to Scottie Hager, leading the Hops to a 4-0 victory to avoid a three game sweep at the hands of the Archers.
The Hops would score three times in the second inning. David Benitez got the Hops going with an RBI single that score Art Mason. Forrest Owen then doubled home two more to make it 3-0.
Oscar Aleman would add an RBI single in the third to build the Hops lead to 4-0.
The story was Ramon Garcia though. Garcia (11-7) was magnificent in this one, mixing up his pitches and carrying the no hitter into the eighth. After getting Dias to ground out to open the eighth, Scottie Hager lined one over the head of David Benitez, who made a leaping attempt to keep the no hitter in tact. Garcia was lifted after that, allowing one hit, while striking out two and walking two.
Alvin Gellman (11-8) took the loss for the Archers. He only went four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. The Archer bullpen would only allow one hit over the final five innings.
Flagstaff (82-68) will now return home to face second place Salt Lake (80-71) in a huge series, and then Albuquerque (51-100), which has the worst record in the IBL.
Around the League: Henderson avoided a late collapse and pulled out a 6-5 extra inning win at Mesa in the opener of a huge weekend series. Willy Geronimo hit a two-run home run with two-out in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. It was his second of the game. But Albert Zambrano lined an RBI double in the top of the 11th to send the Silver Knights on to the victory.
Glendale got a walk off win over Surprise 5-4 to overtake Scottsdale and move into first place in the DL Central. Manuel Hernandez hit a solo home run off of Samuel Ojeda, his 25th on the year, as red-hot Glendale continues to make a push for the postseason.
Colorado Springs is doing the Hops some favors as they grabbed the first two games of a four game weekend series with Salt Lake by scores of 3-1 and 3-2. The Snow Sox still are holding onto faint Wild Card hopes, while damaging the Chukars chances.
Henderson completed a weekend sweep of Mesa with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. The win keeps the Silver Knights in first place and dwindles Mesa’s Wild Card lead down to 1 /2 games over Las Vegas.
Salt Lake managed to split their four game weekend series with Colorado Springs as they rallied for a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Dezi Azerod hit two home runs as Santa Fe defeated Chandler 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in the battle of contenders. The Chiefs lead the DL East and the Silver Bullets are currently a 1/2 game back of El Paso in the ML Central.
