MLB The Show 20 vs. 23

Wondering if I'm the only one still playing the show 20?
I Pretty much exclusively play franchise with 1970s or 1980s rosters.

Just wondering if it's really worth getting the new version. Graphically, I don't see that much of a difference but what about gameplay wise? What's different For a franchise?
    Thanks

I'm still playing The Show 20 on PS4. I'm in Year 8 of a franchise I started on The Show 18.

I don't have a next gen console, so still enjoying this franchise I built. Until my PS4 dies or The Show comes to PC or brings back Y2Y saves. I'm perfectly good, continuing playing my franchise.

I never played 20 but I keep hearing the hitting felt amazing. Can someone break this down for me?

My favorite baseball games were MVP 05 and High Heat 04. I don't know if that informs what you might say to sell me on The Show 20, but maybe it'll help.

The first kind is wrong. The second is superfluous.

I use Directional Hitting. And The different type of swings Power, Normal, Contact have all different types of hits. I still see different types of hits on a daily basis.

Re: MLB The Show 20 vs. 23

The hitting, cpu and user has been pretty much the same for years and years now. Biggest improvements that are very noticeable from 2020 is the fielding. The animations are far better and just plays smooth and looks like a baseball game. Not to say 2020 doesn't however.

Biggest reason to get 2023 is the schedule and playoff format. Oh and the scouting/draft process is so good. Presentation is far better now too. But gameplay wise you're not gonna see much difference than what I said above. All my opinion of course.

I would def NOT get MLB23 right now for a last gen console. I have it for PS4 and only play offline and the framerate is so bad & inconsistent I’m about ready to start playing MLB22 again. I personally liked last years draft format better as well for multiple reasons. The only reason I really wanted 23 was bc of the schedule format. If you are having fun w/ MLB20 & have your sliders perfected I would stick with it.

Re: MLB The Show 20 vs. 23

I just updated from 20 to 23 (on PS4) last week. There are a few notable improvements that convinced me personally to get the new game. The player editing/creating has gotten some improvements that allow for more realistic looking players. As someone who makes my own way-too-detailed fictional rosters to play with that was a big deal, but you probably don't care much about that lol. Along those lines, the graphics/lighting are a little better, but not a super noticeable difference. Seeing some cool new cutscenes is nice though, and the network presentations are really good. Gameplay-wise, hitting feels about the same level but there is a much better variety of defensive animations and they look more realistic as well. I had really gotten sick of the defensive animations in 20. There are new commentators too, but I was one of the few that still preferred Matty V. Boog Schiambi did a solid job, but I will probably mute commentary at some point. For franchise mode the biggest difference is probably the revamped draft, it is nice to have but I wouldn't say it is reason alone to switch to 23.

There are framerate slow downs, but I really only get them during some batter walk-up cutscenes, and that is despite playing on a regular old PS4, not the Pro which supposedly performs better. Others seem to have had more issues than what I have encountered so far, maybe I just haven't played enough yet or it is from digital download vs. playing off the disc (I have the digital edition). Overall I would say 23 is at least on par with 20, with some visual and presentation freshness at the cost of potential performance issues from time to time.

Re: MLB The Show 20 vs. 23

I agree with the post above. I play MLB 20 on PS5 and MLB23 on XBox Series X. If you are a historic franchise player I don't think the difference is significant. Both are good games. I play both still and enjoy them both. I play current season out on MLB23. I have a few historic that I play on MLB 20 (I also have a 1990 season I play on MLB21 which is my least favorite version of the 3).

There are positives and negatives for each in my opinion.

                  MLB20
+Has a lot of created historic rosters from many seasons.
+Works better if a quick count user
+I feel it is tuned better in regards to outcomes. For example, I'm striking out the CPU with similar settings on MLB23 way too much (leading league in strikeouts by large margin). So I'm still trying to get that figured out.
+This one is a personal preference but I like Matty V as announcer more than Boog.
+I'm a quick play player who turns off cutscenes and walk ups. I think MLB20 plays slightly faster.
+You can check swing without strike always being called. Though you can on MLB23, most the time it is a strike and hard to check swing.
                  -Feels like more foul balls.

                  MLB23
+Defense improvements. Nothing huge but feels better. The throwing meter that moves makes it more difficult.
                  +More uniform options.
+Stadium creator (useful for historic if you can find good recreation of older fields).
-Quick counts is different. Have to play with stamina sliders now to try and get it to work.
-I'm finding it much easier to strike out CPU. Too much so currently.
+I like the sound of the ball off the bat better but some don't like this.
+Feels slightly smoother to me. I think this one plays 120 FPS on next gen vs 60FPS of MLB20 (could be wrong).

I'm an auto scout person so the improvement in scouting in MLB23 doesn't affect me.

I am still not sold on MLB23 using "clutch" rating when there are runners in scoring position. Hasn't seemed to be a problem in MLB23 yet in my games but I prefer the MLB20 rating use.

The other thing to consider is that I don't believe there are any historic rosters out for MLB23 The Show and that is how the OP liked to play. I believe a 1984 and 1990 are in the works bit probably a ways off from release.

To me they are both good and I will continue to play both. I don't think either are really significantly better than the other for offline play. If I can dial in strikeouts and quick count issues, I'd prefer MLB23 but it isn't a huge difference in my opinion.

Do NOT get it on PS4. I couldn't tolerate it on PS4. If you love the game that much just give in and buy a PS5 for it. That's what I did and I'm so glad I did. It's a huge difference IMO.

I only play ‘20 solely due to the classic rosters.

Gameplay wise the hit variety, the defense, the pitching is imo, significantly better in '23 versus '20. I think overall the game on the field in '23 is easily the best of the series.

For franchise the draft and scouting has been revamped although I'm personally not a fan of the overall package, especially the fact that you're locked out of scouting Monday thru Sunday and can only view prospects and make scouting changes on Sundays. I do like how information is displayed for prospects and that you have a better grasp on the potential of juco and college players vs that of high schoolers. Also like that the age issue has been fixed.

Draft day itself and the signing of picks (although again its done on certain days which is annoying) is really well done. I had a high school player not sign because he wanted over slot value and I refused to pay.

The presentation is franchise mode is really well done with new stat popups and news in the ticker. The commentary as you go along in franchise mode is great as well.

Other than the additional roster spots 93, budget being redone, and logic tuning (personal opinions vary), its still the same franchise premise in '23 as in '20, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because what it offers works well and I spend my time on the field versus in menus, but to say its not growing long in the tooth at this point would be a lie, although they took a big step this year in revamping the scouting/draft experience, even if some of the design decisions left me a little annoyed.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Since I am on PS4 and two people have told me not to get the new version, I'm going to follow their advice and stick with 20.

Maybe for Black Friday I will treat myself to a PS5 and revisit this, but I'm going to save 400 bucks and the cost of the new game for right now. :-)

When and if you get a PS5……wait till you see how 20 looks and plays on the PS5. Locked 60 FPS. It is gorgeous.

It’s an all time game in the series….especially if you are a total classic roster nut. There are over 80 rosters to choose from from eras spanning from the early 1900’s thru today. And some incredible fictional rosters with Bacons last fictional that had service and time career stats.

Also if you still have 19 there is a incredible gem of a fictional roster created by Volsfan39. A work of art with tons of easter egg baseball movie players. It’s a different vibe from Bacons and it’s amazing too.

My opinion is 20’s hitting engine to this day is unmatched. Hit variety is supreme to this day. Also…not a popular opinion….presentation for my taste is far better on 20. Not a fan of the artistic direction of 21/22 and 23 has taken. Some things I do love
Like the new ticker. That is great. But camera replays/angles/pace/HR cameras….superior for my taste on 20. Also SOTS.

I despise what they did with check swings starting on 21 and it has not changed since. Took the discipline rating out and made it a button pressure based action…..not going to get into it…there are a lot of us who loathe it. It is far from realistic now. It went in to an extreme level of failure rate. The balance is gone.

Defensive animations are certainly improved on 22 and even more on 23. If I could have the OF play and ticker on 20…..I would have a near perfect baseball game. But since those are the only two things I think are better overall on the “newer” versions….there was no way I was leaving behind the franchises I am attached too and the sheer amount of incredible roster content that quite frankly you will never see duplicated ever again on this series.

If you love classic rosters, don’t care about the new schedule…..you are not missing out on too much and can easily keep enjoying and appreciate MLB 20. And like I said….on the PS5 it’s even that much better.

Also there are two very good 2023 rosters available. Check out the classic roster thread for the names and PSN in the vault.
