Out of Position Penalty for Playing in LF?

Do non-OFs get the full 40% out of position penalty when put in LF? I ask, because LF often seems to be a position where teams will put players who are not so great at IF (or defense in general).

    Dallas Cowboys

It's complicated. Depends on what their other positions are. Using Diamond Dynasty (because it will tell you their new rating on the lineup screen right away), if I put Vaughn Grissom (SS with 2B/3B secondary) in LF, he gets a 30% penalty. If I put Chipper (3B with SS secondary) in LF, he gets a 35% penalty, nas does Ozzie Albies (2B with SS secondary). Freddie Freeman (1B with 3B secondary) gets a 55% penalty. And Sean Murphy (C with no secondary) gets an 80% penalty. Rafael Devers (3B with 1B secondary) gets 50%.

It's not a straight penalty, it depends on their existing positions.

Thats weird for Chipper since he played at least 2 full seasons in left field

Not really, individual DD cards (which is what DonkeyJote was referring to) can have different primary and secondary positions depending on what the card is intended to represent. Some cards represent a single season, some represent a specific range of years, etc.

The card is for his 1999 season, and he didn't play LF full time until 2002. But it's still weird, as his cards in previous games did have LF, and he had 199 career innings in the Outfield by 1999.

It's not weird; if it's a 1999 season-specific card (Retro Finest, right?) then he played every game at 3B with only 1 appearance at SS (none in the OF).

His card from last year was for the 2000 season when he also didn't play any OF, yet still had LF as a secondary. His card from the year before was also from 1999, and he also still had LF as a secondary.

And there are other cards representing specific periods with secondary positions that wouldn't apply. JT Realmuto (WBC) didn't play 1B during the WBC. Gary Carter (Awards) didn't play 1B in 1980. Luis Arraez (Monthly Awards) only played 2B and 1B in April, hasn't played 3B since last July, hasn't played LF since 2021, or Shortstop since 2019. Vinny Castilla didn't play any SS in 1997.
