Re: MLB The Show 23 Patch 10 - Patch Notes

I don't want to beat a dead horse over this strikeout issue. I was pitching on Legend with the Dodgers against the Padres. The Padres had 14 hits in the game. I struck them out 15 times. They had 35 AB. 14 of those were hits, 15 were strikeouts. That is 6 batted outs in the whole game. I've had several of those games this year where it feels like it is either hit/strikeout. I get that we will get some crazy outcomes but that happens a little too much.

The more I see stat overlays or hear commentary lines about how someone has been playing lately, the more I wish they’d give us access to all the stats being run behind the scenes. They keep track of so much stuff I’d like to look at outside of games like how a guy is doing his last ten games or how many line drives he’s hitting

        DJ,

Just wanted to come back to say you are correct and I was wrong on this one. After reading the description again and testing with it at 10 back on Allstar pitching I for sure noticed more fouled off pitches they normally weren't touching before.

Cpu hitting is still quite broken IMO and probably permanently have the game shelved now. Highly doubt I even buy this game anymore since it's clear this is the broken cpu hitting we'll get from now on.

In all fairness. The CPU hitting is NOT “broken”. You can’t get it to work. Most can and have. As much as a pain it was for a lot of gamers, me included. So I don’t think “this is the broken cpu hitting ‘we’ll’ get from now on”.

I've tried everything everyone has suggested and then some. It's the first time in history that the consensus is legend pitching is needed for the cpu to not strikeout a ton and be a threat. That, to me is a big red flag something is wrong. And even then, they still swing and miss at balls outside the strikezone way too much. Then I get so many games where it's a hit or strikeout only majority of at bats. So boring and not fun at all when those games happen.

Allstar difficulty in 2022 gave perfect results with very little to no slider adjustments. This year if you try default Allstar, you see strikeout looking after strikeout looking. I swear I think I could pitch well with eyes closed. If not broken, then they severely damaged cpu hitting this year. With the amount of people converting to legend from allstar pitching this year, I think we can all agree something is amiss this year.

I wish there was a real way for SDS to realize the problem they created, but if most are happy with just switching to legend pitching it is what it is now. They for sure will never revert back to how cpu hitting was before.

I just looked at the stats at the end of your Pirates franchise you posted on YouTube. I looked at about your first ten games. I didn’t see the huge strikeout numbers by the CPU you’ve been talking about. You struck out 17 times in one game, but otherwise?……

I’m on HOF and my K numbers are fine vs. the CPU. Anyway, dead horse, but CPU hitting isn’t “broken”.

Fair enough. Played tons more with lots of teams before those. I always get a strikeout every 2-3 at bats on average in the long run of anything tested. 17 should just never happen imo. I've had 19 before lol.

In my games on Legend, the CPU is making contact on 57.5% of Swings on pitches outside the zone. League average is 63.5%, so that's pretty close. So I'm not understanding why you're seeing such different results. When I tried Foul Frequency at 0 on Legend, it was just 42.7%, so that was very much a problem then. And it was too low on All-Star as well. But on legend with foul frequency up, it's been pretty good.

As far as the changes to All-Star, why are you seemingly so attached to staying on All-Star? I'll be honest, I think the fact that pitching on Legend was easier than All-Star last year was kinda dumb, and I'm glad that's been rectified. To me, that said something was very wrong with hitting when lower difficulties actually made the CPU more of a threat. I don't understand why people who play hundreds of games in The Show per year playing on a higher difficulty means something is "amiss".

Re: MLB The Show 23 Patch 10 - Patch Notes

Allstar gives that middle ground PCI size for the cpu I always felt was what was meant for use to get player ratings to matter the most. At least I think that's whyvit is most preferred.

I actually agree. Legend was easier last year than allstar. The oversized PCI created a lot more weak contact in play. On Allstar, that weak contact was more fouled off pitches or swing and misses, which was actually needed until this year. Allstar with cpu contact at 7 (8 if needed a bit more punch) was perfect. Legend this year is OKAY, but nowhere near as good as Allstar was with cpu hitting sliders raised.

2021 we actually used legend with great results. But we lowered cpu contact to 3 and solid hits to 3. Huge difference from then to now when everyone is legend with contact at 5 or 6. Something very fundamental changed whether people agree or disagree it doesn't matter. But it's very obvious. I'm not the only one, just most vocal.

Yeah I'm classic pitching on legend default sliders and it's been good. I've never before pitched on legend so making the switch took me a long time but eventually I got there.

MLB 22 just played for the heck of it with our sliders last year on Allstar. Two games. I had 7k and 6k. Had 7Ks as my lowest once in 2023. With quick counts fixed how they were I had a CG with Kershaw on 108 pitches. But yeah, nothing has changed for 2023 [emoji849]

I'm not gonna go back and play that full time though. I want new schedule and playoff format. Why couldn't they wait one more year before they changed the game lol

Another reason the strikeouts might be a little higher for some is me and DR use quick counts. That might be part
of the reason. Most of the time we only have to get two strikes. Sometimes we start with a 2 strikes so that’s even worse.

I had forgot you guys used those. So I actually decided to try them (I don't normally use QC). My Strikeouts definitely went up. I played 5 games. I've been averaging 7.6 Ks since moving to Legend. In my 5 games with Quick Counts, I had 1 game under 10. And I had one game with 20. I averaged 12 per game. I even got 10 using the Royals (starting Greinke, who got 4k in 4 innings) against the Dodgers.

And it makes sense that it would cause more K's. I kept track of the counts I was getting, and based on real strikeout rates after different counts, "expected" strikeouts went up about 20%.

So, yeah, I think that's possibly the reason for the difference in results. I also noticed in those 5 games that there seemed to be a lot more hard contact for both sides in those 5 games.

To each their own. I still think it's pretty bad. Every time I decide to give it another shot, it gets turned off a few games later.

The in-game guide actually acknowledges the gameplay difference between normal gameplay and QC:

The second paragraph is outdated as of last year I believe since the game doesn't subtract a pitch in QC anymore (which is the reason for inflated looking pitch counts). and while I cannot verify it I believe the last two sentences are outdated as well - such that it seems like QC now always uses the "sim engine" fatigue system rather than draining more for every pitch actually thrown by the player.

So, don't just go blindly by what the guide says anymore since part of it is obsolete and just hasn't been updated, but the constant stream of complaints about increased K's from those who use QC would seem to indicate that the first paragraph is still very much valid.

This isn't a new thing either - from everything I've read on OS over the past several years, the QC crowd tends to fight strikeouts (and walks - two sides of the same coin depending on whether a pitcher is effective or not) more than any other part of game balance. That's why I feel like overcompensating with the contact slider when QC is involved isn't a bad play.
