    Lost drafted and signed players

I'm a few years into a Pirates franchise. I had the max 93 players in my system during the season, then signed all my drafted players, 6 or 7. I get to the off season and look around and realize two players I know I drafted and signed are missing. I easily signed them both out of free agency. I have had a full roster before and not lost players like that. Eventually you have to cut down to 93 but this was at the very beginning of the off season. What's going on here?

The most you can have at the beginning of the off season is 98. You can have 98 until December then you must trim to 93. So you could only sign 5 of your picks max.

Ahh, okay, thanks. I was not aware of that limit. I will trim some of the fat on my roster this off season. Can trade away guys after the next draft to make room if needed as well.

I wait until after the AAA and AA while the MLB season is still going on (Sept 25th range). If either AAA or AA team is not in the playoffs then I can also cut from that bunch. If both are in the playoffs then I cut only from my A team. Those last 3-5 days of the MLB season and into the postseason, I will run with a 90 man org.

That way I know all my picks will make the roster since you need to be be below the 98 limit the second you advance to the offseason and you can't cut players in the postseason.

The guys that are about to become free agents dont count towards the 93, do they? Like if I end my season at 93 with a bunch of guys about to be free agents and I have 8 draft picks would I have room for the 8 picks or do I need to dump a few guys before my season ends?

They count because you have exclusive 5 day negotiation time with them. Only once the 5 days hits and free agency starts do they go away so the 98 limit is impactful the first day of the off season.

Adding on to this. This is something the game doesn't tell you unfortunately as far as the 98 limit. Took me a bit to figure it out.

Players retiring do not count as they are gone from the roster. If I am signing 6 picks, I will cut a low overall low potential player from A ball at the beginning of September to accommodate this.

Thank you sir, you just saved me a few draft picks, I’m at the last day of the season so it’s my last chance to cut anyone to get below 93

Good to know! I've had this happen a few times and had no idea this was a thing. Thought I messed something up with the signing process.

It's definitely one of those things the game does not tell you. Took me some time to figure it out myself.
