I wouldn't put him in Ozzie Smith territory, but I don't know where this talk is coming from that he was weak in the field.

Gold gloves are kind of a sham of an award - especially before we got all the advanced metrics. It often just went to the most popular player among the finalists.

Jeter's advanced metrics are REALLY bad. DRS is only available for the back half of his career, but he still has the lowest career DRS of all time.

It's definitely debatable how much stock we should put into these metrics - especially in an era where players weren't evaluated by them - but that's where the narrative that he was bad defensively comes from.

For me it was more of a visual thing with Jeter. It’s easy to remember the highlight reel plays but the booted balls and wild throws kind of get forgotten. To me he just didn’t look like he had great range either, although there was times he would flash a really good one.
As far as the metrics, I’m not real familiar with a lot of them. Everyone has their own take on what they see or interpret as being good or bad.
I see it different than you do.

That was a thing? Baseball teams hardly ever bus anyway. You're not even allowed to if it's over 200 miles; CBA mandates flights.

No doubt Jeter was a liability to the Yankees. They should have won 10 championships in the time it took them to win 5 with Jeter. [/EndSarcasm]
