I can't say with 100# certainty, but it sure seems to me this is true when looking at regular relief pitchers who have better current stats than their teams Closer, and a lower OverAll than the Closer. And that regular reliever with better stats and lower OverAll takes the Closers job away from him.

Regardless, the CPU is capable of offering less and could have signed him for as little as I did, which was 60k. In my view, the free agent logic should absolutely make the CPU sign players like him for at least the league minimum of 780k. There’s no reason why any player that good should be shelved, especially when the CPU is choosing absolute trash instead. I might go around and take some captures of just how bad these examples are.

You are only able to sign him to that low of a salary after the salary arbitration hearings due a flaw in the system where a player will agree to any contract. The CPU doesn’t know, isn’t programmed, to game the system during that time. It knows his ask is $6-7M and you need to be somewhere around that figure to get his interest level to a spot where he might accept.

If at any point between November and February you offered that salary ($60k or league minimum) he would have declined and possibly blocked you from further negotiations.

Okay, let’s say they wouldn’t get him for 60k until after arb. However, you still see teams put in bids well below asking price all of the time. And why, then, would the CPU not pursue more competitive options when the average amount of budget space across the league is over 50m with several teams having budget space exceeding 80m? One even has 100m! You are giving the game logic way too much credit. There’s nothing brilliant about what it’s doing. It has plenty of budget room and yet it’s not only passing up talent that it can afford and improve teams with, but it’s designed to be downright disinterested in players based solely on where they fall on a cross section for age and OVR.

If it was purely age and overall then signings like this wouldn’t occur (signed for $583K)

Re: Weird ageism programmed into free agent signing logic.

So, I’ve discovered an interesting workaround. Once you complete Spring Training, the league’s interest in the vet seems to return to a level where teams properly value them again. Though you will be told that you can’t trade them until June 15, choosing the suggest trade feature will override this restriction and you will then be able to deal the vet to a team in need in exchange for whatever player(s) the vet’s trade value commands. I was able to send Freeman right back to the Dodgers where they immediately made him the starting 1st baseman. For my trouble, I actually got an early 20s B-potential prospect with an OVR in the 70s to add to my farm system. It’s stupid that I had to go through this to keep Freeman in the league, but it’s a viable response to the problem that is actually worth the trouble.
