This might be a stupid question....

Are there any restrictions or rules for moving players between MLB, AAA, AA, etc? For instance, can I freely move someone from MLB to AAA if I want to call up a younger player?

This is not a stupid question, just a difficult one to answer. Baseball has a lot of rules.

On MLB The Show, a player has to be on the 40-Man roster to be called up to MLB.

When you send down a player, they can go down as long as they have an “option”. Players start with 3 options. Every year they get sent down, it counts as 1 option. They can be sent up and down as many times as they want in 1 year and it will only count as 1 option.

Once a player is out of options, he must be Waived and clear waivers before he can go down to AAA.

Piggybacking off that, I downloaded a roster from the vault and I'm trying to create each team's Opening Day roster so I can start a franchise (I control all teams so I can keep the rosters current).

For Kansas City, Matt Sauer was put on the Triple-A team and he is a Rule 5 player. For some reason, it won't let me put him on the MLB roster. It says he must be on the 26-man roster the whole season, which I get, but why can't he be promoted to the majors from Triple-A? If I put him on outright waivers (which is an option) and don't have anybody claim him, would that be removed?

To add on to JWD great explanation, there is a roster handbook inside franchise mode. TBH, at the moment I cannot remember which tab it is under, but it does a good job of explaining the different roster rules.

I'm guessing you're controlling all 30 teams?

If so, I would trade him to someone and then trade him back. That should, at least I think, fix this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the receiving team just puts him in their minor league system and the ‘5’ designator is still there, so the it’s the same problem. Even when he goes back for someone on the ML roster, it happens the same way. Maybe the waiver system is the way to go and it’ll get removed when he goes unclaimed.

If you're controlling all 30 teams couldn't you put the teams involved on manual roster and waivers so you're in control of the moves? That could solve the issue.

Or you could just release him and resign him right?

Definitely. If you're willing to eat the payroll hit just put all teams into manual and release him.

Quick additional question:

If you have someone on the 40 man and they don't make the MLB Roster so you put them in AAA does it use up an option to do that at the beginning of the season ? And once it does you can bring them up and down as often as you want during the season ?

I noticed a couple years ago that after spring training guys were losing options so I am assuming it does. So if you have someone on your 40 man for 3 seasons and they never make the MLB roster the following season they have to clear waivers to put them in AAA another year ?

I also thought it cost an option every time you brought them up and and then sent them back down but last year I noticed with injuries I brought a guy up and it didn't use an option when I sent him down and didn't know what was happening. All these years and I never understood the options thing. I really need to read that handbook when I reinstall 23 and start my Franchise back up.

Lastly, I feel like in real life AA guys and other young prospects get innings in spring trainiing with the MLB club with split squad games and such but in the game are only guys on the 40 man allowed on the Spring Training roster?

And with that how many years can you leave a young player off the 40 man before they become eligible for the Rule-5 draft ?
