How do I play against a friend?

This is probably when some of you wonder whats wrong with this guy? Its just that I am not skilled enough to play online and havent played on line for more than 10 years

I have a childhood friend who I persuaded to buy the game and we want to play against each other online. Neither one of can figure it out.

Please help with a step by step.
