Ugh why do I let reality get in the way of my playing?

The last 2 years of this game have been a grind at no fault of the game itself. I always wait for a roster I like with a solid amount of minor leaguers. No problem, but I've switched teams at least 10 times and thought I was finally getting in a rhythm with The Astros and then the trade deadline came and went and I'm itching to restart. Thought maybe I'd go and find trade deadline roster and start over but then I overthink it and decide no I'll start with opening day rosters and make the trades myself.
My other issue is choosing a team to rebuild but I get annoyed with myself using a team that won't spend in real life so I try to mimic that in game or I use a team like Baltimore or Miami and it irks me that many MiLB guys don't have names in game. Just hear number announced.
I know I'm being picky and I know it's dumb. How do I stop it?
I just want to be content starting from opening day and not stress over unrealistic trades or stuff like that. It's as if getting older ruined sports games for me. When I was younger I didn't know all the ins and outs of roster building and just played as my favorite team and hit start.....

Do what's fun for you and don't stress about it. It's a game, an alternate reality. I love doing rebuilds.

I like to start with accurate rosters, and then after that, it's anything goes.

It helps me that I do 30 team control, so I can once in a while mess with another teams roster moves to keep all the teams competitive. But that's just me.

The game can be really fun if you don't over think it.

I had the same issue since MLB like 07. Always restarted, wouldn't be able to get into the swing of a franchise until September or the offseason. It was frustrarting. Growing up, my brother always would make fun of me and say I spent all my time in the menus lol

MLB 20 was my saving grace. The season being delayed let me just play and create my own world. I ended up playing 5 seasons through Covid, and then 21, I was able to do it again and played a franchise from 21-26

22, 23 and 24, I just started during early access and was able to get going and get into it.

Someone made a post on here, saying Just Play, and that's the best way to do it. Play, get into it, and let your guys develop how they do in your world. After a season or 2, you won't even care anymore. I was able to sink a ton of time into 24 and am in 2029 WS with my Mets. I had the same issue some did, where there were no CPU trades the first like 4 seasons, and being that I started with the base rosters, I have no Imanaga, Lee, and a lot of guys with CAPS, so I want to use the TDL to launch my true franchise

Look at it like this though - see what you built and think of the time you got in. It'll make you realize if you want to start anew or keep it going

For your situation I’d recommend doing 30 team control. That way you can make real roster moves throughout your season without having to start over. Plus if you get bored with a team then you can roll with another again without having to start over.

Myself I take the default roster and play. I add in prospects I want, draft classes as the seasons progress and don’t look back. My franchise is my own world and I love watching it develop over time

30 Team Control. Manage it all and you feel invested for everything that happens and it doesn’t grow as stale. Allows you to create storylines.

How do you stop it? I'm going to say this harshly; not as an attack but to emphasize the point here....

Easy - stop comparing things to real life. This is a video game - it's not a sim; roster ratings are totally subjective and in no way, shape, or form reflect reality (unless you tell me that SDS has the DNA sequences of every player and has invented technology to correlate those sequences to how they will behave and perform). The reality is, when anyone does rosters, they just make it up...sure, they'll lie to themselves about basing it on "real stats" - but every baseball fan knows that baseball stats "lie" due to sample size and the inherent nuance/variability of the game.

At the end of the day, the players are just avatars for you to play with in a fictional universe - focus on their ratings and who they are in the mode itself. Embrace that fact and stop trying to do things the way "real life" teams would do them, YOU are the one roleplayng as the GM. If you just follow how a team operates in real life; you've lost the entire point of playing the mode. This is a roleplaying game...it's just as make believe and fictional as Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy, etc. Remember, franchise mode is NOT a mirror for real life....the environment has different inherent variables (93 man rosters, 3 trade slots, etc.) that impacts EVERY decision you make; comparisons to real life are invalid the minute you start the mode.

Real talk - do a solo franchise with GM contracts on and ask yourself - based on the ratings in front of you, how would YOU run this team based on the dynamics of the franchise mode universe the game creates.

One other thing, every team has a story to be told....there's more to franchise than "rebuilds". You can even randomly select a team and just plow into things.

Saying this as someone that used to struggle with the same things - but then I realized my error...and just started having fun and playing "make believe".
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

I disagree. It’s pretty darn close to a sim if you lock into details in video game regards. I get where the guy is coming from. Once you “make it a video game” it becomes the equivalent to a bad game for some of us; a guy may as well go play NBA Jam or play online 1v1 instead of Franchise Mode. But until you full control everything you’re not going to be happy. Leaving realistic transactions and organizational operations to a generic computer code is going to leave you frustrated.

Realism is an unattainable goal because the only "realistic" trades and outcomes that can occur are ones that have actually taken place in real life. The moment stats, records, rosters aren't 100% accurate to real life, the game becomes a video game playing out a virtual world that simulates the sport of baseball both on and off the field.

I've never "full controlled" anything and I'm happy. So I guess 30 team full control isn't required to find happiness and entertainment value with the game.

Re: Ugh why do I let reality get in the way of my playing?

I understand both sides of this. While I don't do 30 team control and I lean towards the "it is a game and let your world play out", I would be lying if I didn't let real world events impact me.

For me, I don't worry about the other teams so much but I do struggle when my real world team does something. For example in my 2022 franchise I traded Hunter Renfro because real Brewers did. In my 2024 franchise I feel the urge to trade for Nick Mears and Aaron Cevale. I don't need things to align 1 for 1 at all but when playing a current season it does impact me a bit when real world big moves are made.

I almost prefer to play with older rosters to avoid this. Yes there is the "this didn't happen in real world" feeling but you know that going in as opposed to mimicking a current season, playing along and then the real world making a huge change on you. When I play Era mode in NBA 2K, there isn't that urge for me to change things as I know what happened in real life already and I'm not "playing along or recreating " it.

My sound silly and probably is. But that is how my brain is wired and reading posts like this I think many probably are somewhat similar. Similar to when I see posts about "would this trade I made be fair and realistic " and see how making trades ruins some people's franchises as they have feelings it wssnt realistic and now they dont have the same investment.

As an example, since my Gamepass just expired and I may not renew I have just gone back to my MLB 22 franchise.
No urge to trade for Nick Mears or Aaron Cevale on that one. Roster is totally different so it is more a "video game" now. I don't feel the urge to re-create 2022 exactly like I would trying to loosely "match current 2024 and play along".

Another thing that may help is simming 1st season and then playing from there as that desire to "match real world" is gone (real world hasn't happened yet).

The best is probably to just play as JoshC amd Countryboy have said but I totally understand the other side of it and that feeling of mimicking 2024 and playing along with "real roster" events in your video game world.

Re: Ugh why do I let reality get in the way of my playing?

I agree with most of the points already made.

I always start with the default roster, it's already out-of-date when I begin my dynasty. So what happens from there is my own universe. That being said, what Brew101 said above goes for me as well: I'd be lying if I said real-life events don't impact my universe.

I'm trying to stick to my trading house rules with MLB 24 to cut that off somewhat. So far, so good. But again, I'd be lying if I said the real Braves trading Luis Guillorme didn't influence my decision to put him on the block and trade him (but the trade DID follow my house rule!)

Bigger realism issue for me with 24 is that the default Braves lineup is akin to the 27 Yankees. Through 55 games, I'm 40-15 and Matt Olson has 24 homers. And I was thinking "is this realistic?"

But Yordan Alvarez also has 24 homers for the Astros in my dynasty. The real-life 1912 Giants started their season 48-11-1; more recently the 2001 Mariners were 47-13 after 60 games. Did Ichiro wonder if it was realistic to get off to that hot of a start? I'm guessing no.

So I decided the other night I'm enjoying the game too much to worry about that stuff. I'm going to play and whatever happens happens. That's the beauty of sports (and especially baseball) you never know what you might get.

I have the same problem. It’s been years since I’ve started a franchise and stuck with it.

I get jealous of the people on here who play multiple seasons in their franchise. Maybe I ll get it done eventually.

But I do get my moneys worth every year. I play the heck out of this game and thoroughly enjoy it.

It allows the common man that still strives to compete and has an interest in the sport to par-take in it like he has the talents of a player or the mind of a GM/Coach/Manager/Owner. I mean most of us definitely like baseball more than Anthony Rendon we just didn’t have the talent or work ethic to get there. We enjoy the process of sport simulation just as much as the people getting paid to do it, but some of us are plumbers, teachers & architects.
