In order for a batter to successfully check swing on a pitch outside the strike zone he must have knowledge of the strike zone. The question then becomes what does he think the strike zone is? Does a batter with high discipline check swing at a pitch in the strike zone or outside the strike zone?

You seem to be saying the batters have no idea what a strike is. I've never seen a batter swing at a pitchout.
You are correct about vision. But Discipline = check swing is just for human players. For CPU players, it also includes chase/lay-off for the strike zone. Also pitch type, pitch repetition, count, and quirks also impact this.

I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that I’m saying the batter doesn’t know what a strike is. What I’m saying the umpires strike zone doesn’t impact the batter’s decision making. So changing the umpire type doesn’t impact the batter, it just impacts whether or not a a pitch is called a strike or a ball and if it’s variable (like real life) or perfect. Batters will still chase outside the zone or lay-off inside the zone at times no matter what the umpire choice is.

Perhaps we were agreeing while not realizing it. I suspect you are correct about plate discipline for cpu batters but the only thing I can find regarding a definition of plate discipline is check swings. Do you have a source for that?

If you are saying the batter is unaware of which strike zone is being used I agree but from the source I identified who apparently has done a lot of work studying the topic it appears personalized and average are both modified versions of perfect. Therefore if perfect is the base from which the other two are derived it seems logical that the cpu batter reaction is based upon perfect and then modified by discipline rating.

Changing the strike zone doesn't change what the batter will do but it does change the outcome of some pitches and plate appearances where the batter takes a called strike three on a pitch that barely touches the strike zone and would not be a strike with perfect umpire setting.

If I promise star or ace to sign a player and then don't use him as a star/ace in the lineup/rotation are there consequences regarding his attributes? If not why is that still in the game for contracts?
Does anyone know the answer this!? Just hit my off season in my franchise. Does this matter anymore?

It only exists for contract negotiations. It has no impact on player attributes nor performance whatsoever.

So we could just tell 5 pitchers were signing in FA, that they're all "Ace" or tell all position players that they're a "Star" or "Everyday" to boost their interest, and if we don't make them or Ace or play them everyday, nothing happens?

Would you agree that needs to be changed as in removed from contract negotiations?

Not a huge problem but a minor issue to be addressed.

What I wonder is whether the cpu teams offer ace or star and then don't follow through. I don't like to cheat the computer but also don't want to be at a disadvantage.

Ideally they can implement it again, but not impact the attributes from a regression perspective, but just limit the progression for a player. NHL has something similar where players morale wouldn’t necessarily impact their attributes, but they would put in trade requests if you didn’t honor your promises. Same with NBA2K where it impacts your team chemistry, which hurts attribute boosts you will get when your team has a higher chemistry rating.

Would be a nice way to limit that option. Either that or have players actually see your roster construction and see if you have too many highly rated players in that position so they have less interest in signing with you unless you pay them more.

Morale as implemented made no sense. A player recently promoted to MLB from milb was unhappy because of the arbitrarily assigned morale settings didn't match what he wanted. In reality every milb player loves it when he is promoted.

The 2 hitter in the lineup wasn't considered a star. The morale thing needed to be eliminated and was. Their mistake was leaving it in contracts.

Completely agree. I was just offering ways it could be re-implemented and have it make a lot more sense then how it did work originally.

The cpu doesn't use it. Its strictly for user teams much like the in season contract extensions.

Thank you for the clarification. I only do contract extensions after the season ends which the cpu does. My understanding is cpu teams don't use sponsorships which is why I don't use them. Is that your understanding also?
