Let's Talk Program Stars (as an offline player)

Let's talk about program stars and earning them in the first inning. Now, I realize that the first inning has quite a ways to go but I am already greatly concerned about my ability to reach 300 stars with an average amount of game play. Let's break down what we have so far.

    Missions
There are 55 points to be earned here. These are all online so right off the bat that leaves out some of the offline players, whether due to choice or poor internet connections. It is far easier for online players to transition to offline play than vice versa.

    Granderson Missions
This can grant you 20 points. If you look at how many Moments there are in this program and how many multi game moments there are then this amount seems skimpy compared to last year. Being ultra conservative using last years numbers these Moments, as stand alone Moments, would have earned a bare minimum of 32 points (3 points for single game missions and 5 points for multi game moments). And that does not take into account that there is one more step after that to accomplish.

    Conquest
This earns you 30 points and for many of us is the easiest way to earn points. Not much has changed in Conquest except a serious nerfing of XP, meaning you will earn fewer stars for actual gameplay.

    1st Inning Collection
This grants 75 points but the only way to accomplish it is to spend your stubs. You need 5 of these players to go along with the two you chose at launch. These are going for 12,000 a piece so that is 60,000 stubs to buy 75 points.

    Prospects collection
This one is even worse as it only earns you 20 points but if you assume that most did the Tebow conquest and have done one affinity to 25 points to earn a prospect you still need 8 more cards and at the current market value the cheapest 8 cards will cost you around 140,000 stubs.

Oh have I mentioned yet that the bosses currently sell for 30,000 each so it is much more cost effective to just buy the bosses as opposed to spending around 200,000 on doing these collections. Plus just buying the bosses gives you a head start on the next inning program. They seriously miscalculated something when simply buying all three bosses is the cheapest avenue.

    Showdown
Finally the elephant in the room that grants 70 points. This mode is either easy or impossible depending on who you ask. I am 0-2 so far. I lost stubs each time and have come nowhere close to the final boss. This may be impossible for me and many other average to mediocre players.

So, If you fail at showdown and don't have 200,000 to spend on collections then so far you can earn 50 points (Granderson and Conquest) as an offline player. If you play as much as I have then you have gained about 70-80 points simply by playing, but that well will run dry when you have completed all of the conquest maps and done all of the moments. Anything after that is meaningless offline grinding for points. That is something Online players don't have to deal with as all online modes have rewards that can be earned by playing.

I am sitting at 130 odd points. When I finish the run of the main conquest map I may be around 150. I know that they are releasing another player mission but if that one also only earns you only 20 then it is not a big step. I am wondering where the other 130 points are coming from?

Im already at 300, so I probably shouldnt complain, but thats pretty much entirely because of the state of the world right now and that Ive played non stop since release because I have little to no work to do.

It was pretty obvious stars were going to be a problem upon release, which is odd seeing that they added rewards going up to 1000+ points.

Im also completely out of things to do online as Ive done all the missions and beat each conquest map so here I am just playing random games against the CPU to grind innings/the few affinity stat missions I have left

See, my problem is that I am an all around gamer. I picked up Out of the Park Baseball on Friday and that ate some time. Then I picked up Animal Crossing and that ate some time. Next week is Half Life Alyx and The Room VR both on VR and those will eat some time.

I have never been one that just dedicated all my spare time to one game. The Show was played more than any other game last year by a multiple of 4 or 5 but that is still a lot less than many dedicated players will play.

I'm at 320 as I type, and like you have been playing non stop since work has shut down. I'm so terrible at showdown so those 70 points everyone gets easy I can't even sniff!

I'm at 475 and haven't touched online yet. But I am a pretty good player and most of my points have come from Showdown since I am grinding the faces and prospects (finished the NL central + Gallo and Snell) . I have noticed 1 star for every game or two of showdown. And I have not played anything other than the Show since it released. I also use conquest to knock out the daily roster star missions.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster... I game in the evening after work and family activities. I'm sitting at ~120. Short of spending a big chunk of stubs, I don't see a path to 300. I remember last years 1st inning program as being a bit more of a challenge for offliner's but at least there was a path. The removal of the non-program'd moments for player programs is a huge hit to possible program points. Hopefully they adjust this and add more opportunities going forward.

Re: Let's Talk Program Stars (as an offline player)

Yeah, there really isn't much to do offline that genuinely adds up to stars. Realistically you need to do the daily challenges for an easy but dull 4/5 stars (plus probably another 2 for the 2 games of conquest it usually requires to get the innings), but that also means completing exchanges that have gone up in price this year as you can't use locked in players, while some are impossible so have to be skipped as the devs clearly never even considered them (exchange catchers mask/chest protectors, but they removed all but diamond/gold of them) So 4/5 a day for the 30 days, if you did this monotony every day, would be 120-150 of your stars. Very, very dull though

I probably got 50 from completing the US conquest map, another 50 from completing Mto with the Rays and Rockies (which isn't even DD) and then the rest from completing the meagre offerings in the program (showdown, conquest, Grandy/Wood).

The reality is, it'll be even worse next month as I won't have any desire to redo the US map or Mto, that got me probably a third of my stars.

It's looking a very bad year for offline players, even worse than last year, which was pretty weak already. It's the first year playing DD where I am honestly not particularly interested in playing it, after only a couple of weeks. I used to be excited to get home and play, but honestly now even in my free time I spend a lot of time trying to even think of something to do. Sad

Yeah, if I hit 300 points this inning it will be solely due to the US conquest map and MTO. I can't and won't do that every inning.

Doesn't matter. All you need is a piece of the PCI on the ball with that card and you will catch a 115 exit velo.

I was just thinking about this the other day:

Isn't it crazy how Joey Gallo is a Show HoF that is beloved by everyone. His card, based off the attributes we're supposed to bow down to and the devs talk about, should be absolutely useless with such low vision.

Yet, when the conversation shifts to pitching being unsatisfying and bad everyone will point out how pitchers with "low" control can't expect to hit spots.

So Joey Gallo, the hitting equivalent of a big stuff, low control pitcher is an icon but the pitchers just toss BP or throw balls through the backstop.
