Fielding in "The Show" - Is it a Game Maker or Breaker?

For years, I've personally felt that fielding is the most enjoyable aspect of virtual harball. While I love hitting a HR, striking out a guy or executing the right strategy in the right situation just as much as the next guy...there's always been something personally unmatched about robbing a HR, diving down the 3rd base line and throwing the runner out by a 1/2 step, or just making the routine 6-4-3 double play.

So what would you say about Fielding in this game? Is it closer to being a Game Breaker or Game Maker?

I've heard about the fielders letting balls roll "past" them on the infield, and have seen clips where outfeilders take questionable angles at line drives, allwing the ball to go all the way to the wall and resulting in triples...but how accurately do these examples portray the game on a whole?

Is fielding a lot of fun or do the animations take over? When you gun a guy out from deep-short with Uribe do you really feel it? What about control over outfielders - like picking the perfect time to dive for a blooper hit to the short outfield - are the butons responsive?

    Thanks guys.

I'd say the fielding in this game is one of its weaker points. I find it very hard to control the fielders, and if you are even a smidge off the center of the ball, the outfielders let it roll right by.

I have actually set fielding to "auto", but kept throwing on "manual". I was tired of losing triples and inside-the-park home runs that should have been routine singles.

      Thanks, Ryan. Anyone else?

I really don't want to have to put my fielding on Auto.

Yes its weak....game is pretty solid as an MVP converter...but the analog fielding in NCAA MVP was great! Made some skill involved...fielding in MLB requires little skill and there are hardly any errors, the errors that are made are usually dropped pop-ups which sux......but all in all cool game, bad fielding setup

I'm experiencing this a lot. Balls that seems to be easy just roll under the glove hand, without a real attempt made at the ball.

          It's starting to get frustrating.

I put up with the mediocre fielding because I really like the rest of the game so much. It's somewhat improved over past versions, but it's still light years behind MVP IMO. I haven't had to turn "auto" fielding on though. The only thing really bad thing I've had so far are two instances of outfielders not properly fielding (or at least knocking down) ground balls hit right at them.

I also agree that the errors are usually pretty weak. The ones I see are either the occassional overthrow of first base or the dropped routine popup. There are so many ways errors can occur in baseball and this is one area that the game doesn't represent very well at all.

Not the best fielding, but definitely not a game killer or anything.
The game is damn good everywhere else.

Question from a guy who only owns an Xbox and almost stayed in Target playing the demo long enough to get thrown out- I noticed that a groundball hit at Biggio rolled between his feet as he ran over to it. Would it make any difference if you took a slower path to the ball, basically playing the ball so that you had to dive at it to make the play? It seems as though the animation is acting like the fielder is overrunning the play for some reason. I just wondered if you guys thought that would make a difference?

Hmmm...that's an interesting point. I remember in Interplay Sports Baseball 2000, you sometimes had to time your approach to slow grounders rolling away from the fielder so as not to overrun the ball.

Exactly what I do. You people are probably charging the ball full speed which seems to cause this problem. I take my time getting liners because the computer isnt going to be dumb and run for 2nd. I havent had this problem since I used the slow down strategy. Maybe you guys should try it too.

That being said, the fielding isnt all that great and probably the games weakest point but just try out what was said.

I have never been a fan of the fielding in this game, its okay but not my first choice. Mvp has fielding done correctly for the most part. The fielding in the MLB 2k series is poor also.

because it is really both, you can take control of the fielding when ever you want. This games fielding is better then others because it is a challenge, not some "oh go to the spot and catch it" type stuff.

as in my prev post mvp ncaa VS the show....

to me the bad fielding is a game breaker (rest of game is so damn good though that it is hard pill to swallow)

once u go analogue fielding it is REAL hard to go back!

mvp the fielding is so responsive/challanging...w/ the hit variablility...and the variablilty of fielders rating (both throwing and fielding ratings are easily felt by user)...

no other game have i seen an appropriate amount of doubles between 3b and 3bman. (not even high heat did this!)

Yeah fielding is definately the weak point of the game. But the game is still a very good baseball game this game is taking up about all my gaming time even over my 360 games.

I tried playing with auto defense but it isn't the same. Still like everyone else is saying it's not a game killer.
