I used to have the same problem baserunning. I didn't know when to press L1 to advance to the runners. It wasn't until later that I found out that you could just hold onto L1, and they would run still. Well, it's the same thing with throwing... you don't necessarily have to time it, just keep holding onto Circle, and they will eventually throw it to first.

Sometimes taking it to the bag yourself without the extra throw is better

Me either. I press triangle and then while the ball is in the air i hold down circle until the ss or 2b throws it. That's exactly what I do and I never have any problems at all.

Preloading throws with auto-fielding on just flat out doesn't appear to work.

I can pre-load on manual or assist, but not on auto-field.

Yeah, I'm AUTO field, MANUAL throw and I think the preloading doesn't work for the ball hit to the SS as it's, well AUTO, but once I throw the ball to second you'd think preloading the secondbasemans throw might work.

              Well, I'll just continue practicing.

I honestly haven't either. I can preload and everything seems fine to me.

                  What are your fielding settings.

There are no problems on manual and assisted. It's only when you have auto-field and manual throw that it becomes clunky. For me at least.
