About to buy a Playstation for this game and others, have some questions

I am about to sell my Gamecube and get my first Playstation 2. My two sons seem more interested in Kingdom Hearts than Mario these days, and I cant live with myself without trying a great baseball game, possibly the best ever. I am a big PC gamer, and I am tired of MVP.

    Couple questions:

    1. Can you set it so its hard to throw strikes?
    2. Is there a "home run" cut scene? I think this takes away from the suspense.
    3. Is a PS2 a poor choice with Revolution and PS3 so close?

    Thanks!

Come to the darkside... I was one of those idiots who long ago sold my PS2 for a bunch of XBox games. My kids were a little miffed as they said there were not enough games for them on the Xbox. In retrospect, boy were they right. Anyway, after my horrible experiences with MLB2K6 on the 360, I broke down and traded in a couple of 360 games, and bought a new PS2 slim, with The Show & Kingdom Hearts 2 for my girls. Boy am I happy with my investment... and so are my kids.

Anyway, to answer some of your questions regarding The Show:

    1. It can be hard to throw strikes, depending on the pitcher. If you have a pitcher with a lot of control, and understand how to use the Pitch Meter to influence the movement of the ball, then you can throw strikes all day. But be warned if you just put pitch after pitch in the strike zone you will get tagged.

In most baseball video games I am usually very aggressive on the mound, and if I can get a batter to an 0-2 count, darn skippy I am going stright for the jugular. Well in The Show, you have to pitch smart or you will get hurt.

    2. Sometimes yes, sometimes no depending on the circumstance. When you absolutely drill one to centerfield you will be rewarded with a scene of your batter watching his handiwork and the announcers singing your praises. In other cases, like my Craig Counsell HR against the Rockies, he sent a curving line drive down the right field line, it was hooking foul, but just barely made it over before the foul pole. The entire time the announcers were anguishing over whether the ball would make it and there was no cutscene, until after the ump made the call.

    3. Not for The Show. I have not had this much fun with a sports video game in a long time, and frankly this is easily one of the best baseball video games I have ever played (and I've been playing them since Earl Weaver Baseball on my PC). And like others on this forum I dont regret a minute buying the PS2, and The Show has sold me on a PS3 for next year. I CANNNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS GAME WITH A NEW GRAPHICS ENGINE ON A PS3! Sorry, I've just become hopelessly addicted to this game.

Buy this game and Socom 3 and you are good to go.

The Jax and Daxter games are good for the kids...
as well as Ratchet and Clank....
if you like platform games, you may even like them.

          As for baseball...
MLB the Show is a wonderful game.
Most of the guys her are using "classic" pitching. It doesn't use the meter (it's like MVPs), but relies on how long your hold the button to put velocity/speed on the pitch.

Only the homeruns that are no doubt get the cutscense. For instance, most times Daivd Ortiz, Adam Dunn, or Bonds hit a homerun, you hear that crack and you know it's gone... how many "barely made it" home runs do those guys hit... very few.
It's a pretty good mix of cutscene vs non-cutscene. what's nice is that if it's a big name player you'll see their real swing (close too if not exact) when they crush a homerun.

As for other games on the PS2...
There's a heck of a good library of games... for you the adult gamer and for your kids. It's a good choice picking one up.

It is not a waste buying a system for $130 that has a library of "975 (PS2) and 1,335 (PS1) in North America." As much as I like my XBox, that number simply is just crazy. You've got all these greatest hits titles too chose from for the kids and yourself... 20 bucks a pop. Not too bad.

          As for what's ahead..
The PS3 won't have many launch titles and more than llikely a price tag over 500 bucks (no idea how much the required HD will cost either). Games will be 60+ dollars.

You'll be making a very wise choice.

Plus, and hopefully not, you can't be sure that just because the game is coming out on the PS3 it's not going to be full of first time problems. You've got almost a full season, so go for this game now.

              It's the King.

I second what DX says. It is well worth picking up a PS2 for this game + games for your kids.

I'm on my 3rd PS2. I sold the first one that I had since launch which was the bulky one back in March to get a slim PS2. Then I sold my slim PS2 since I wanted to just concentrate on the 360. After playing MLB2K6, it made me go back and pick up a PS2 again for MLB06: Show + a few other titles I didn't play. I've owend a PS2 since launch and it's been a good system.

Re: About to buy a Playstation for this game and others, have some questions

                  Thanks for all the advice.

I know what you guys are saying. In fact, I am a huge RPG fan (currently playing Oblviion on my PC) and I have yet to tap into all the unique RPGs only available on PS2. Plus I love platform games even at my ripe age of 35. So the decidion has been made.

My only concern is rosters. I also want to buy NCAA Football 2007 and there are no rosters in that forum. How about The Show. My question is, what is the most common device I should purchase for PS2 sports games rosters? Action Replay, Sharkport, Max whater? lol

Finally, does anyone hook up their PS2 to their TV via component inputs? Does this help with the infamous "jaggies"?

                  Thanks!

I have the MAX AR and it's a breeze to use. I also bought HD cables for my HDTV 58 JVC t.v. and the game looks GREAT on it.

jim, i'm almost ready to make the plunge to a ps2 as well but i'm wondering when you hookup with hd cables are you seeing any black bars on your hd screen or does it play in widescreen with no stretching, i missed out on HH in its glory days with no ps kids wanted a nintendo, anyways while there is lots about mlb2k6 that i really like i'm not sure it will hold my attention for a full yr.

No black bars. The quality is like watching the crispness of ASB2k5 on the XBOX if you ever had a chance to see that game. I was playing the game on a 36" Toshiba, a good t.v., but it was grainy. I tell you, far as I'm concerned, with the animations/quality of the graphics, this IS next generation as far as I'm concerned.

Sask, no fanboy here. This game is the best ball I've ever played. I keep thinking I want to rent MLK2k6 for the 360, but man, it's a war zone over there and "it don't sound good". So, I'm just gonna be absolutely satisified with this one.

pssst. I heard there's baseball in heaven.

Sask, you can't go wrong with this game, flat out. I had a GREAT game last night, 1-0 in the 9th, I bring in Roberto Hernandez and he gives up a lead off triple to Eckstein to start the bottom of the 9th. Well, I got out of it by just giving up the tying run. Had only four hits so far. I got five in the top of the tenth when they brought in Looper, thanks to an error by their left fielder, went on to win. This after a four game losing streak.

This game just reeks baseball, atmosphere, everything. Can't say enough about it.

You will always have Jaggies with the PS2. it's just the way the hardware is.
It's really not that bad. Yes, componet does make things a lot shaper and crisper, and yes, it makes the jaggies stick out some too... BUT.... it's like running something on a mid level PC without FSAA on.

The PS2, It's worth the 130 easily now, not that 150 was all that bad either.
