I almost always guess 4SFB. If I don't get the yes, I know it will be a moving pick and adjust accordingly. I'm still learning, but I made the move to All Star a couple days ago and am about to go a level higher. The key is to know the speeds of the other pitches as well, not just the break. If pitcher John Doe has a 90 mph 4SFB and 2 pitches at about 80 and I don't get the indicator for a fastball I know whatever is coming is going to be about 80. I wait for the break and adjust from there.

Obviously someone like Halladay or Beckett will give this theory a test, but it is a starting place for the minors. I'm still a newb and this works for me so far.

On my RTTS I am the cleanup guy, hitting .374 with 7 homers, 33 RBI's and 33 steals midway through May and am the leader for ROY. My stats are ~78 contact and ~70 power with 96 speed (why am I not leading off?). Most of my hits come in bunches it seems, where I'll go 4-5 two straight nights and then 1-4 or 1-5 four or five straight games.

Question, does the clutch stat matter in RTTS?

Have any of you guys seen a bug where you can't press any buttons in training modes (during RTTS). I have had 2 batting pratices where I couldn't swing, at all. Games work normally, and it's /really/ frustrating.

I just quit practice, haven't seen it since that one time.

My current RTTS stats...my players gotten HOT! As of August 1st he's hitting .408 with (all estimates) 38 hr's, 120 rbi's, 35 2B's, 9 3B's, 105 SB's and 65 K's in 500 AB's. I'm finishing the season on All-Star to see how far I can go, then I'll go up a level. Right now my Jays are 2nd in the AL East behind the Sox and have the 2nd best record in the AL. My RF is overall the best in the majors with 85 con, 80 power and 99 speed. If the rest of the team keeps it up, we'll catch the Sox. Serves them right for trading me! New Bambino curse?

Yeah, new Red Sox curse, lol. I batted .407 with 48 HR's, 153 RBI's, 142 steals (love the 99 speed, lol), over 150 runs and I struck out 99 times in 704 at bats. I also ended the season with over 280 hits breaking that record and the steals record, getting 1000 training points for each.

I went off in the playoffs, batting over .600 w/ 8 HR's and 16 RBI's and the Jays won Series. However, we lost half our team to the Sox, Yanks and ChiSox. Right now after 1 month we're 10-10.

i finally got called up to the Cards last night, in my sixth year LOL. it took me awhile to master my swing and build up some attributes plus i had a couple bad injuries that set me back a lot of games. i'm amazed at how different the game feels now in the bigs, the stadiums, lighting and just being able to play against the big names, it's awesome. sucks though because Albert is on the Braves for some reason.

Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

After a long hiatus, I decided to resume my RTTS career. I left off at the very end of my 4th ML season as a SP for the Blue Jays. I had a career year going 15-7 with a 3.76 ERA striking out 156 and walking 65 in 201.0 IP. Pretty good, but considering I am the #4 rated pitcher in the Majors, I should have put up better numbers. But I have a feeling I am poised to make a run for the Cy Young this year. In Spring training, I was striking out everything with a pulse, notching 38 in 35 innings. And between the points I saved from my final advancement period of last season and Spring, I have over 4,500 to use up going into the season. I think I might use them to add a new pitch.

What would be the easiest way to find a player that had been traded from another team? Ryan Zimmerman isn't on the Nats and I'm wondering where he ended up.

I love this game. I created a pitcher, was drafted by the Orioles. Started off as a reliever for double A, but quickly made my way into the rotation as an 18 year old. had a very good year and next year was placed in the AAA rotation where I did well. The third year I was invited to spring training and ultimately made the big leagues in the rotation. My guy has done very well and has played 6 years in the big leagues and I just signed a 5 year, 120 million dollar contract to play for the red sox. He will be 31 years old when this expires so he should be able to sign another big contract after that expires.

Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

So I have been steadily working on my RTTS pitcher, and note that I usually sim most of the years because I wanted to get through his career rather than halfway playing all the games.
With that said, here is how my guy is ranking in there. He spent 4 years with the Orioles, then traded for assuming cost saving measures to the Reds.
Well, after 21 years in the Big Leagues now, 17 with the Reds and 4 with the Orioles, here are my guys stats:
                    Win/Loss record: 485-71, win % of 87%
                    ERA: 1.82
                    Complete Games: 152
                    Shutouts: 95
                    Innings Pitched: 5,098
                    K's: 4,865
                    WHIP: 0.93
Has been a key component in leading the Reds to 7 World Series titles, and 4 other times they made it but lost. Its shocking how good the Reds have played to be honest over my time with them. I don't force sim championships or anything, and I'm estatic how my pitcher has become the best pitcher ever.
He is 41 now, and in the last year of his contract. I think I may have him pitch another year, see how his career totals are and may go for the wins record.
I really enjoy this mode, and my way is probably different than others but I want to see my guy succeed career wise, and it has been an enjoyable experience going from a guy who struggled to strikeout minor leaguers to becoming a dominant force on the mound. I applaud the devs for making a wonderful mode like this, simply fantastic.

Side note, the Cubs World Series title drought ended in 2030. What, only 122 years between championships, not too bad right? lol
Also, I found it interesting how horrible the Yankees have been in my RTTS after the first few years. Their best pitcher for the longest time was Phil freakin Hughes. I was amazed by this. Also, Prince Fielder is the new HR champ with 789 and Pujols broke the RBI record. Hustron Street became the saves leader with 797. I think there is a guy that could break Pujols' record, as well as Rose's hit record could be in jeopardy if a guy can play 2 more years.

Well i had a second baseman and his story is very good.
He signed with the Yanks for 3 years in the AA. He got to the AA all star game and was the BEST of the leauge. In the AAA he was on fire and had a 41 hitting streak. He didn't make it to the All star game of the AAA but he passed to the MLB. The contract was almost up and in that year he got rookie of the year award. The second year was a little bit worser. He hit less HR and had less RBI's, but he had a lot of hits. The Yanks got to the World Series and won it against the Reds. After that he had a normal season. The next season the Yanks got to the World Series but lost to the Mets. The Yankees traded him to the Pirates and that's when the regret started. The Yankees were worser then the O's themself. My character hit 21 HR and 120 RBI's(He usually got like 5homers and around 80 RBI's), Heck he even had late Inning walk offs(He only did a walk off single with the Yanks. Even though the Pirates didn't get anywhere didn't mean he wasn't giving up. The next season he hit almost a cycle againt the cards for the first game of the season,The same happened to the rest of the series until the Nationals stopped that Almost cycle streak. He had first place in everything offensive and got the M.V.P award and the Slugger award. I haven't finish his file yet because I'm busy on my Starting pitcher

Ugh, frustation is the story of my career. So I'm in my fifth season, all in the Blue Jays organization and it's been a frustrating year (and career). In my third season, I got called up to the ML rotation in early May and never looked back. That year was pretty good, I won 13 games as a rookie and we were in contention for the Wild Card, 1 game behind Boston with a couple weeks to go. We collapsed, ending up 7GB. Every since then, we have done nothing but lose. This year has been the worst. All 4 of my losses have either been 1-0 or 2-1. I have left in so many other 1-0 or 2-1 games, it's frightning. So I finally got fed up and asked for a trade. Care to guess where I got traded? Anyone?

I created a catcher and decided to pick my own team instead of getting drafted, I went with the Rays. About 2 months after spring ball I was in AA with the biscuits they traded me to the blue jays with out me asking, I was pissed. I finished out the year in AA and going to the all-star game. I was invited to the jays spring training and I made the team. I was kind of excited then. I played 3 years in toronto at the MLB level and was on my way to stardom. Then the Jays traded me to Baltimore with out me asking again? In baltimore I was the catcher and Weiters was DH? When I was a free agent I signed with the Dodgers and went on to win 4 straight WS as a dodger. I had pictures to prove it but my PS3 died so I am looking forward to the show 10.

Oh the irony. Without even trying, you answered my question, lol. Read through some of these careeers and you'll quickly find a theme; the trade to Baltimore. For some reason, everyone gets traded to Baltimore. I pray this was fixed.

My pitcher Henry Walker (ironic name; I have the fewest walks allowed pretty much every season) has now experienced the ultimate frustration: losing the World Series three years in a row. First with the Braves against the Red Sox, then the Yankees against the Mets, and finally with the Dodgers against the Twins (I have been signing one year contracts to find a place that will give me decent run support so I could possibly win 20 games). Now I have signed again with a new team, hoping to finally win a ring with the Cardinals.

Speaking of RTTS and the playoffs, the teams should go to 3 (or maybe 4) man rotations. It sucks being the Ace of a staff and not going out to pitch the critical game 5 or game 7.

I accidentally raided another post with this off topic rant below. I thought I'd drop it in the right topic just to keep this idea alive. I would like to see what others think... and I keep saying Russell like he's just going to pop in but I think he's got more important things at hand... which is awesome. I want my game!

                                Here it is:

The following would completely fix RTTS, but what I'm about to suggest will not happen for years, if at all. Just dreaming, so bear with me:

-No Speed Skill Bar. Or at least start it high and fall gradually If you're a 20 year old Center Fielder, you should be fast and skinny. What sense does it make to start out slow and young, only to get faster with age??????? WHAT?

-Add a reflex skill bar. Start moderate and allow room for fall/gain/aging

                                BOTTOM LINE:

-Skill points should NOT always start at the bottom and work up.

                                For Example:

Wouldn't it be nice to see your pitch velocity decrease as time passes, forcing you to be a more precise pitcher (ie Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, every other human being who has ever pitched, etc)

YOU COULD ARGUE that this type of 'overly-realistic' type of play would be too much to appeal to mainstream gamers... BUT wouldn't starting with some great (and realistic) attributes such as speed and endurance give you MORE freedom of advancement in the beginning as well as giving the 'Hardcore' MLB gamers a greater sense of realism in their player's 30's (and possibly 40's if you're sickly good.)

It would yield a more readily achievable and enjoyable minor league stint as well as a more interesting veteran aspect... and that's all i have to say about that.
