    Re: PS2 Impressions thread

    Re: PS2 Impressions thread

    Hey fellas,
I'm a die hard High Heater, but thinking of making the jump this year. Still busting out seasons on my PS2. I will probably pick this up this afternoon after work. I'll post some thoughts tonight if possible. To those who have the game: Is there a BP mode in our version? What is the Supersim feature? Does it still have the Text Sim? Is it substantially different from prior versions or is it basically a roster update?
    Thanks, guys.

-Player models look good, I think. Some guys faces like David Wright are spot-on. I'm sure there will be guys who are way off, but so far, everyone looks close to their real-life counterpart.

-Stadiums look nice. Played at Coors Field and Citi. The waterfalls activate when hitting a HR at Coors, so that was cool to see.

-I've seen a nice variety of hits. Had a nice double down the line with Beltran, a few gappers, some hits through the hole, hard shots up the middle, towering HR's (had a cool HR with Tulo off the LF foul pole).

-There are less hits than last year. I had 9 my first game and 6 through 6 innings of the second. AI had 10 hits and 5 in the other game. I use Guess Pitch, but only on first pitch, 2-0, 3-1 and 3-0 counts.

-There is Legend difficulty but I haven't tried it yet. I've only played All-Star and will try HOF next.

-No In-Game Saves, which is a little bit of a bummer for me. There is a Supersim feature for those that like that option.

-Rosters were available for download when connected to the Internet.

-Fielding; didn't see any errors/overthrows things like that but did see Murphy of the Mets try and make a running catch and drop the ball. He extended, had the ball, dropped it and his momentum carried him forward into a summersault; cool animation.

-Cut-scenes are well-done and there's an attempt at some real-time atmosphere as well. Not at 2k's level, but it's there. I saw Giles adjust his jock strap at first base. So cool I had to laugh!

-Pitching is the same as last year from what I can tell. Very responsive. I've got API turned on.

That's all I've got so far. I haven't touched sliders yet, aside from turning pitch speed down a few clicks. Game plays GREAT out of the box.

Hope that helps. I'll post more tomorrow after I get some more games in.

oh, well good impressions...I think I'll go get it on Friday.

I'm looking forward to picking this up today. I have a 360, but I really haven't like the 2K game the last 2 years. Any other have impressions? Anyone trying to play it on a HDTV?

          Re: PS2 Impressions thread

So far I am loving the PS2 version of the game. I did not have 08 so I cannot compare to that but I can describe a game I played last night to give some impressions.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays (me) - All Star no slider adjustments

1st inning Halladay is looking terrible. Walks the leadoff man and allows straight singles to Jeter and A-Rod. Manages to get 2 outs but then gives up the Slam to Nady. 4-0 Yanks after one. After seeing a cutscene of Halladay getting pissed in the dugout, he comes back out and is a completely different player, allowing just one hit through the next 6 innings. In the bottom of the 6th my Jays finally start getting a little bingo going. CC, who had been dealing up 'til now with 8 Ks, walks the first two batters to start the inning. After a single, Adam Lind steps in and rips a double down the 1B line to clear the bases. A sac bunt and sac fly later its a tie ball game going into the 7th. Yanks go down easy in the 7th and the jays get a nice spark with a Vernon Wells 2-run homer to go up 6-4. Halladay starts a little shaky in the 8th giving up a leadoff double so in comes set up man Accardo. Hitting 97 on the gun Accardo fans the first two Yankees, but a single up the middle makes it 6-5 Jays. This is where the game would finish up as BJ Ryan would come on in the 9th and take care of business for the save.

          Some other impressions:
-The strikeouts were 9 to 8 which i thought was good with both teams aces on the mound.
-Seeing the walks is also a good thing with no slider adjustments.
          -Hit variety was excellent
-Pitching is a little tougher than I remember it (07 was my last Show). Seems like the meter moves so fast.
-Manufacturing 4 runs in one inning without a home run was huge for me because I love slapping the ball around the park to score.
-Overall, I don't have any major gripes about this game except that there is NO in-game saves.

            Re: PS2 Impressions thread

Just played an awesome Subway Series game. I lost 5-4 thanks to Mr. Putz giving up a one-run lead in the 8th. Man, if this happens often IRL I'm going to go crazy, lol. Granted, the Yankees lineup is tough, so I'll cut him some slack this time.

Santana didn't have great control but I still managed to battle through 7 innings only giving up 5 hits and 3 runs - all on a 3-run HR by Teixiera.

Delgado hit a towering 3-run HR to give the Mets back the lead, and it chased CC from the game. CC struggled, giving up 10 hits in 5 inning but the bullpen dominated my lineup as I didn't get a hit after the sixth inning (CC started the sixth, gave up 3 hits and was pulled).

Saw my first error today; Wright bobbled a grounder at third and then overthrew Delgado at first trying to compensate.

I had a couple of nice hits down the line including a cool-looking bloop shot by Castillo that just fell in over the outstreched arm of Tex, who tried like heck to make a play.

The double-play animations are very well done.

The called 3rd strike punchouts by the umpires also look really cool.

The apple goes up when you hit a HR at Citi and the crowd reacts appropriately during key moments. Putz, for example, was booed after giving up the lead. Jeter was taunted with "overrated" during his at-bats. When Delgado hit the HR the fans got really loud, which is what you'd expect in that situation.

Still playing on All-Star with no slider adjustments aside from pitch speed has been lowered 3 clicks to the left.

I wish I had more time to play this game; I'm thinking I might have to try Fast Mode for a while to squeeze some more games in. Right now it's taking me about an hour to finish a game.

Mods, any chance we can get this stickied?

I think someone asked about this earlier: there is no batting practice mode

HR Derby is in there, if anyone is interested in that.

Haven't tried an online game yet, but might do that when I get home later.

                  Re: PS2 Impressions thread

Just played 3 innings against Sabathia. Same great little game. No slowdown issues on my PS2 Slim. Graphics seemed to have taken a slight hit plus lots of jaggies.

Played on Legend and had no trouble hitting and that's with pitch speed at full. So I'll be looking to tweak that. Also concerned that Legend difficulty might be more of a CPU cheat level than anything. The CPU was teeing off and knocking bombs with ease. Really hope SCEA uses a different game tuning system when they overhaul the player models next year. It just seems the difficulty levels are basically preset and there's very little one can do slider-wise to adjust how the levels play.

A few new HOF's in the FA list: I saw Tony Gwynn and Dave Winfield (nice!), along with some others. Also rented and played MLB 2K9 today, and let's just say The Show will be my baseball game of choice this year.

Where are you seeing the jaggies, baa? I haven't run across any yet. My framerate has also been solid.

Played in Yankee Stadium and there were jaggies constantly moving along the top of the stadium from the batter's view. The chalk baselines/batting boxes are also bad, but they've been that way for two years now. Which is odd because there were no chalk baseline jaggies in MLB 06. I still have that game, and the graphics are noticably superior in every way for some strange reason.

Ha-ha! Just noticed with the default rosters that the SCEA guys have Arod batting 3rd and Teix 4th, which is how the Yankees should set their lineup. Seems Joe Girardi is the only clued-out baseball person around here.

It really says something about this game when people are choosing it over a next gen HD game. I'm still on fence as to which way to go. I even have 2k9 sitting on my kitchen counter but just can't bring myself to open it yet.

Baa are you playing on an HDTV? Can you play with MiLB teams in exhibition mode?

                            Thanks

No. Just fired up a game in CitiField and the graphics are much better than in Yankee Stadium. No complaints. It's a much nicer rendering, and as a stadium it looks great. Yankee Stadium on the other hand looks butt ugly to tell the truth. I think I'll be using the Mets as my team this year.
