    MLB 09 is extremely frustrating

I have been lurking on here for a while and thought I would go ahead and register to vent about this game. Just when you think you have got the feel for the game it seems to switch on you. Case and point hitting.

Twice in one game I had perfect timing and wheelhouse once it was a foul ball to third the other time it was a short fly to center that was easily caught. Another time in the same game I had perfect timing and solid contact an it was a slow roller to short. This is frustrating because how can you improve on that? If I was early or late or not making solid contact those are things I could work on.

Secondly, I don't know if it is me or what but my players seem to just dive at random moments. I don't remember pushing the dive button but my guy decides to dive anyway. I don't know maybe I just suck at this game.

first off the dive button is very sensitive and it always has been in the show. i unintentionally dove alot last year, and finally just removed my hand from that part of the controller.

secondly, hitting is to an extent a crap shoot, but depends more on the players ratings than anything else. for example, if i guess the location or pitch with ryan braun and then can adjust the batterss vision accordingly, the ball is usually in play or out of the stadium. im hitting .383 with him through 76 games. on the other hand, i am batting a sub par .246 with rickie weeks through close to the same number of at bats. there is no different between the two players, how i guess pitches, and my timing when hitting. the only difference is batter ratings.

it all takes practice. you will definitely notice a difference the more you play. it is also very important to not chase pitches, even if they are in the strike zone. i tend to stay way from anything down and inside or down and outside. up and inside i go after with power hitters, and i love anything(minus a knuckle ball) belt level or above middle/outside.

lol I think plenty of people feel your pain. Hitting is pretty difficult. I've always been a 2k9 guy on the 360 and hitting was super easy. I've played 2 full games on HOF and have gotten 6 hits. Try reading all the threads about hitting, there are some pretty good tips/tricks.

Are you touching the R2 or Right Analog stick? Players will dive if you press those buttons.

As for hitting, that's where attributes come in. Not every solid hit will be successful. I've hit homeruns on balls I was early on.

The game will reward you for being successful as a hitter, but attributes will also ultimately affect whether or not that player will be successful.

I think of it as improving your chances. You'll likely see your players perform at their level if you are mostly successful with your hits. A player can still succeed off a poor hit, but the chances are less likely.

You can always increase certain sliders if you feel that this is not meeting your expectations. What level are you playing on?

You can do everything in right in baseball and still fail sometimes. Those times you're talking about when you get wheelhouse and perfect timing and you didnt slobber the ball are examples. Don't expect to get a hit everytime you do that.

Yeah I just got a no hitter against me playing with the Reds against the Yankees in spring training. LOL, that is pretty pathetic.

I think I just need to spend more time playing the game. Plus it probably doesn't help that I am playing with a team (Cincinnati) that is not that good or at least not at hitting. I will have to learn to keep my hand away from the dive button because I am probably pressing it without thinking. Overall I still like the game just a little frustrated at how bad I am at it.

If you get wheelhouse and perfect timing, more often than not you're going to hit it hard. But there's other variables like pitch type and location. If its a "pitcher's pitch", ie low and away, that reduces your chance of driving it. Anything sharp on the corners should be avoided until you have 2 strikes and forced to protect. Conversely, if the ball is a fat pitch up in the zone your chances of hitting it for power are increased, even if your timing and contact aren't perfect. Thats just baseball physics. And obviously player attributes come into play (hot/cold zones etc).

There is definitely a learning curve with this game and I do not think it even matters if you played last years. You will get out of it what you put into it, no question.

I just had to turn the game off because in my season with the Red Sox against the O's on Legend they are just killing me. I will take a break and start up again tomorrow. I honestly think you can't play this game for too long (on Legend anyway) because then you start to lose focus. My first game with the Nat's #2 starter today I had a 2 hit shutout against the Reds going into the 7th. My last couple games I have been getting destroyed.

As much as I am frusterated right now in a weird way I'm happy. Being this frusterated will really make me try hard to win. I will be very happy when I kill the CPU instead of getting bored with another easy win. When I pitch that 8 inning shutout and then hand it to Papelbon in the 9th I will be happy that I saved my bullpen and beat the CPU again. All good teams get killed throughout the season. It's all part of baseball. You just have to hang in there and play each game as hard as the last game.

With this game EVERY single pitch has to have full concentration. Every single pitch.

You see it all the time in baseball - pitcher makes a mistake & throws a flat meatball right in the middle of the plate. Batter swings and fouls it off. They are so pissed they have to walk out of the batters box so the camera won't see them cussing. Then, when they get back to the dugout they get ribbed by teammates for missing a batting practice fastball.
