I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game :(
Love so many things about this game, but even with pitch speed all the way down I can't judge balls and strikes worth a darn. Basically everything looks like a strike to me coming in and I've tried all the batting views. I wish you could turn the pitch speed down more.Tags: None -
Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
Look at the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand, don't just stare at the strike zone. I know it's difficult, and I'm still trying to get a hang of it.
I still have problems deciding whether a ball is at the knees or in the dirt, so I usually guess pitch down. I guess it's kind of cheating, but it is REALLY hard to tell IMO. -
Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
Here's what I am doing and it works for me.
Batting View = Wide
Pitch Speed = 0 (but as I get better I will turn that up more)
Focus on the pitcher, more specifically his arm\release point. After enough practice you will be able to have a better idea where the pitch might be going.
Another thing I did was tweak the CPU pitching sliders to where it's easier to distinguish where the ball is going to end up.Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
I only played baseball as a little leaguer, but one rule I learned then remains:
Keep your eye on the ball.
I turned pitch speed down to zero, and it's helping. I follow the ball from pitcher to the plate. Yes, I'll still get caught looking from time to time, as sometimes it looks low, but will catch the bottom of the strikezone.Comment

Pitch speed -5 and Wide View has also been the answer for me.[Insert clever, personally-relevant, or cutting-edge remark, data, link, or picture]Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
This works pretty well... Specifically lowering the CPU Pitching Consistency slider, because pitches outside the zone will more often be further outside the zone.
Another thing I would suggest is to only swing at pitches you're looking for and can hit, unless of course you have two strikes. If a pitcher paints the black with a pitch early on in the count, just give him credit... No need to swing at a his pitch anyways.Last edited by spit_bubble; 03-16-2009, 12:00 PM.All ties severed...Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
Adding to this... Because I have trouble judging location too...
Lowering the other CPU Pitching Slider, I think it's just called "control", seems to result in more pitches over the fat part of the plate. So lowering both makes it easier to determine, because more pitches will either be far outside the zone or right over the plate.
As far as pitch speed, I went back to the default and it seemed a bit easier. I have since gone down to -1 from the default center, because it almost seems like with it all the way to the left you can't really tell a fast ball from the off speed stuff.
And finally, I have turned guess pitch on. I think it's pretty clear the game was built for and around this feature. Getting that extra boost when you guess right (I assume there's a boost on the default, and it's not just a placebo effect
) really seems to help.

Just play a game on a faster pitch speed but do not swing at anything. Just watch the pitches and determine strike or ballComment

As Smokie36 said really focus on the release point. Once I started doing that, everything really worked it self out. <SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_2039308738", true); </SCRIPT>Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
I promise you this will work:
Obviously the vitals need to be there. Look at the pitch right out of his hand. Don't get too focused on the pitcher himself as he winds up. Do not daze at his windup it will put you to sleep. Just get read for the ball to be released and pick it up.
Now the thing that's going to help you learn the strike zone GAURANTEED is the PCI indicator. Just play with it on. Go into options and turn it on and you will have a big yellow circle right in the middle of the strike zone. Just simply playing with this will help you. It's an aid. You don't need to keep it on after you learn unless you want to. I do it because I can see the strike zone better. I am telling you this will 100% work. It's a reference point for the strike zone. Since it sits smack dab in the middle of the zone and covers the corners you know anything "east" or "west" will be a ball and just "north" or "south" could still be a strike. Just turn it on and keep playing with it until you have that strike zone down.Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
I had to go back to catcher, wide wasnt helping enough to warrant me keeping on using it since I was doing worse at other pitches. the pitcher just seems so far away it was messing up my depth perception to hit.Comment

Re: I just can't judge balls/strikes in this game
I'm having problems as well, worst thing is I'm playing RTTS and when my guy gets up to bat, 70% of the time the first two pitches are strikes, then I SO chasing a piece of crap. Which makes me start swinging at the first two pitches resulting in being thrown out at first...
I'm batting a dysmal .210 without any HR, at least I have 5 RBI...sigh
