Re: All you young guys should consider yourselves very, very lucky
I am gonna be 42 in July, have been playing video games since pong, had the atari 2600 baseball where all 3 fielders moved at the same time. I can't even remember all the baseball games I've played over the years, One of my Favorites though was Micro Sports baseball for the commodore 64 back in '84. I have been waiting 32 years for this game! The Show is like the Friggin Holy Grail of Baseball games!Last edited by CubFan23; 06-06-2009, 03:21 PM.Playstation Network:That70s_Gamer

... or hedonists.
The implication of the title is that us "old" guys are at least lucky-- maybe, very.
I am one of these "old"-- why the quotes? because 1976 was not that long ago-- guys who, to steal a line from a commercial, and probably misquote it, asks:
"Where are our flying cars?"
No. Seriously.
The real reason they are lucky isn't because they have arrived at the peak of human civilization, but because they believe they have... actually, they don't... and they're right.
The answer to your question (and it's a very good one children) is twofold:
Yes, it could be like you've imagined.
and
No, it never will be because it will always be logically obsolete when it arrives.
I like Earl Weaver, btw. And The Show is the best console baseball game ever. And OOTP X is the best baseball game ever.
I'll quit my rant. I've exercised my right to disagree and attempted to impart some wisdom.
I just thought while I had your ear...Last edited by livnlegn; 06-07-2009, 02:09 AM.Comment

Re: All you young guys should consider yourselves very, very lucky
I stumbled upon this forum while looking for stuff on The Show. Great thread. I am 31 and have been playing baseball games as long as I can remember. Micro League baseball was great. Loved All-Star Baseball 2000 for N64 as well.
Remember RBI Baseball for NES? You could bunt for a HR.
Grew up playing a lot of Bases Loaded for NES as well. I was always New Jersey (with star player Paste) and my brother was always Philly (where I grew up) with Ono. I hate Ono.Last edited by EddieBa26; 06-08-2009, 03:02 AM.The only place to be every other Saturday is strolling down the Fulham Road.

MLB 2009 is the BEST baseball game I have ever played. It is so in depth, its like micromanaging a MLB franchise. But, to this day, I still take some of the top players from the Utah team in Bases Loaded, and put them in my Tiger's minor leagues. In fact, I called up Agua in May, and he has hit .320 with a couple of jacks since then. I alos called up Bellow when Polanco got hurt, though Bellow has struggled a lot.Comment

Re: All you young guys should consider yourselves very, very lucky
I'm 32. I've been playing baseball games since I can remember, back to some terrible, now nameless game that I loved anyway because it had Jody Davis on the Cubs back in '84.
Anyway, baseball was my favorite sport growing up. I played it and studied it, and I always dreamed of a game that incorporated all those real life nuances that make baseball the great sport that it is.
This is that game. I didn't want to judge too quickly out of the box, so I have given it somewhere between 20-30 games to make sure that what I saw initially was not a fluke. It wasn't. This game includes virtually all of the things I used to precede with the words, "Wouldn't it be cool if. . . ." That's not hyperbole. That's fact, and reading others' posts makes me realize I'm far from the only person who feels this way.
So if you're younger, and have, probably, much more time with this game than I ever will, consider yourself extremely lucky. If you play baseball competitively, you will learn from this game and become a better player. I firmly believe that.
Thanks to the development team for everything you have done. I'm continually amazed how representative this game is.
I'm just a little late to this thread but couldn't agree with you more. I'm 33 and have fond memories of the first baseball video game that i ever played......Bases Loaded for the Nintendo (damn that Fendy dude from DC was a beast). To look at the favorites I grew up playing such as Bases Loaded, RBI, Baseball Stars, and Baseball Simulator 1.000, and compare them to MLB 09 is just mind boggling. Even though there are gripes and complaints about certain aspects of the game from most gamers, including myself, we sometimes don't stop and think just how good we have it with games these days, despite their shortcomings. MLB 09 offers just about anything and everything I've always dreamed of in a baseball game. I just wish I had more gaming time these days.Comment

Re: All you young guys should consider yourselves very, very lucky
I, too, am late to this thread, but yeah, baseball games have been part of my life since I can remember. I turn 30 next March, and I remember starting out with that Tiger handheld. Then I had the straight up "Major League Baseball" on NES. Players were just known by their numbers, and I played this thing for YEARS until I knew better. Look what it looked like:
After that, I had the Game Boy version, which was simply Nintendo Baseball without the licenses.
Once I upgraded to SNES, I was able to enjoy Ken Griffey like so many of you. But since that had only the teams and not the players (at least officially), I also hooked onto Tecmo Super Baseball, which had the players but not the teams. that one does not hold up now. I also tried Cal Ripken baseball, since I'm an O's fan, but ouch, that game was not good.
I then made the jump to Sega Saturn, and I noticed not many other people mentioned it. I LOVED Sega's World Series Baseball franchise on the Saturn, specifically WSB II, which I played for a long time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM8wUXjto0A - Still one of the few games where it RAINED and you still could play the game! It's one of the few things MLB is missing! (sorry for the quality of this video, it's all I could find!)
The rest is pretty simple. Had to switch to PS2 after Saturn went under, found the MVP series, 04 and 05, and played those until I discovered MLB 07, and I've been hooked since. I do agree with everyone here, MLB 09 is FAR and AWAY the best baseball game I've ever played, and that's saying a lot. Can't wait for the next one!
As a side note, over the years, I did play some of the off-shoot baseball games, including MLB Slugfest for its goofy NBA-Jam-style wackiness, and does anyone remember this one?

Re: All you young guys should consider yourselves very, very lucky
I guess I'm a younging in this group. I haven't even cracked 18 yet.
Baseball has been my favorite sport since 2003. Before then I was into cartoons and when my dad watch Yankees and Mets games I would be mad because we only had one tv and he would watch the entire. He doesn't have the time but he was the one who introduce me to video games and sports in general.
Video Game List History
Triple Play 99, NBA Live 99, Madden 99, Tiger Woods 99
(My father bought this pack in 2000 and the only games I could play was Triple Play 99 and Madden 99. My father would play with me after he came from work)
Backyard Football 2002, Backyard Baseball 2003, Backyard Basketball
(My father saw that I was struggling with the EA Sports games so he got me some Backyard Sports Games. I enjoyed them but they became to easy)
Madden 2001
(Bought in 2002 because of my cousin.)
NBA Live 05, NHL 2k6, NFL 2k5
I just got a PS2 in 2007(sad,but true) and my classmates gave their old games and I enjoyed them until I sold them to Gamestop and then later my PS2 broke
Backyard Football 2004/2006, Backyard Baseball 2005/2007, Backyard Basketball 2004, Backyard Hockey/2005, Backyard Soccer/2004
From 2002 to 2006 these were games I play everyday on the PC. I didn't have a system and fighting games were a nono in my household.
MLB 2k7/2k8
Bought a new PS2 and bought MLB 2k7, though my friend told me to get The Show, cost ten dollars more, enjoyed 2k7, 2k8 had some bugs but I enjoyed. Infact I won each human vs human game except one but I not going into detail.
Madden 2006, NBA Live 2006, NHL 06, Nascar 2006, Tiger Woods 2006
Once again my father bought me a pack and I only played Madden and Live
UBO/Cal Ripken Real Baseball
First online game though I never got past level 20 it was a fun. It made the transition to the Show easier because the game is just like RTTS except you can be a free agent and still earn points
Madden 2008, NBA Live 2008, MLB 2k9
I sold my PS2 to my friend to buy a guitar so I was with a PC again. I played these games. I tried MVP 2005 mod but the faces were messed and creeped me out. Thankfully I knew about the internet than ever before and I used modes to make the games better. MLB 2k9 however was a disappointment. 2k was going in the right step in making the games better but fell off a cliff.
MLB 09, Madden 2010
Got a summer job saved some money bought a PSP and bought MLB 09 and haven't stop playing since. I played Madden but I wait till I finished RTTS.Comment
