It is what it is, it's very different in Chicago nowadays. Because it is not like it was in the '60s,'70s, '80 where if you lived on the South Side you rooted for the Sox and If you lived on the North side you had to be a Cubs fan. There are tons of Cubs fans on the South Side and im sure there is a large number of Sox fans that live on the North side.

Re: Your Beloved Team
Another Jays fan here - 2nd place with 5 votes now!
Last night was a good win - the youngeons looked good (Lind with 6 RBI's and Snider with a HR and a Double).
First season I remember watching was '89 when they lost to the A's in the ALCS (oh, how I hated those teams). By 1992, I watched almost every game I think and remember all the big moments of that years World Series run.
I remember jumping off the couch with Alomar's homerun off of Eckersley in the 9th in the ALCS. Never forget Sprauge's huge HR in game 2 of the World Series or Winfield's 2 RBI double in the 11th of Game 6.
1993 was the icing of the cake. I still have game 4 and game 6 recorded and watch them every off season..haha. Game 4 was the 15-14 game in the rain - one of the best 'worst' played games I've ever seen. Game 6 - of course "Touch 'em all Joe, you'll never hit a bigger one!"
Hopefully one of these decades we get back into the playoffs!Comment

Re: Your Beloved Team
Haha, no idea. I was at work. At break, I turned on the TV to see if the Jays built on the 4-0 lead they got in the first and the first thing I saw was some garbage on the field! I spent my entire break trying to figure out what happened, before finally leaving once they said it was 12-5.
It might have to do with the fact that there's no beer there tomorrow.
Haha! I had to actually think who we beat back in '93. I remember thinking last November, "Hey, wasn't that the Phillies? They're the champs now!! GRRR!" And the Braves were the team we beat the year before too. Funny that both of those teams start the season playing for each other this year.Last edited by Doran; 04-07-2009, 11:12 AM.Fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple LeafsComment

Re: Your Beloved Team
hey guys,
thanks for all the stories, keep em coming!
From what I see, the majority of favorite team choices come from being around the team at an early age or having their parents' favorite team bleeding down a generation.
I'm still searching for my favorite team, its hard to just wake up and say, "I am now a ____ fan!" But I swore to myself that this season I would have someone to root for.
As for the poll, a surprising turn of events from last night! The Blue Jays and BoSox are in the lead with 6! Close behind with 5 are the Mets, Braves, Cubs and Yankees.
(I think I could have called the BoSox being in the lead, but not the Blue Jays)Comment

Re: Your Beloved Team
I became a yankee fan in the early ninties. This is actually when I bacame a baseball fan as well. I grew up in a house that didn't pay to much attention to baseball. It was all football and basketball. Bears and Lakers respectively.
The one thing I knew was the SF Giants WERE NOT respected in my house. My dad was a dodger fan but not to the point of watching or listening to games. Baseball was "boring" so I never payed any attention to it.
Then I got a job as a dishwasher in 93. (I am now the Executive Chef for a rural hospital in central cali) Anyhow I knew the chef was a baseabll fan and he asked which team I routed. Being a long time NY Jet fan (Thanks to Tecmo Bowl, that's for another story though) my first reply was New York Yankees though I knew nothing about the team.
I didn't want to say "I don't watch baseaball!" because I wanted to have something to talk about with the chef on a daily basis.
That year I watched and paid attention to the season and I was hooked on the yankees and the game of baseball that I had missed out on for so many years.
I went to 6 west coast Yankee games that year, and was awstruck. I still go to many each year with my wife and kids.
I took my Dad, my brothers, my GF (now wife) and now we all love the game. My dad included LOL! He actually sits and watches games on TV now.
So the Yankees sort of brought us closer. Add to that Derek Jeter, Paul O'neil, Donny Baseball, Bernie Williams and you get the picture.
Side notes. My son plays Little league for the "Texas Rangers" so he now wants to watch them LOL Oh well as long as he's involved.
My wife and daughter are HUGE Giant fans BOOOOO!
Drives my dad nuts. But considering our home town team is the Giants AAA affiliate I understand. So that's my baseball/team story.
I hope you find a team you love and will have similar magic and stories I've had as a fan of the Yankees. Good Luck and enjoy the season,

Re: Your Beloved Team
Wow, the AL Central is the most irrelevant division in baseball. Through 60-some votes, three teams (Twins, Royals, Indians) have zero votes. My Tigers just got their fifth vote from me.
Hopefully the real standings turn out like this, but not if Justin Verlander keeps throwing B.P. to the opposition.Comment

Re: Your Beloved Team
The Phillies put up a good fight in that world series too. Lenny Dykstra was a machine that year! If it wasn't for the Phillies bullpen they might have had a damn good chance that year.
Congrats on the series last year though - I think the next few years will be a good time to be a Phillies fan with the relatively young 'core' group of players you guys have.Comment

Re: Your Beloved Team
I was a DIE HARD Expos fan. Yes, you read that right - there weren't many of us. I was living in Vancouver, and coincidentally moved to Ottawa (2 hours from Montreal) in August, 1994 to start university. WIthin days of my move, MLB goes on strike - Expos are 74-39, and 5 games up on the NYY for best overall record in baseball. Finally, a chance to see the Expos put an end to a string of 2nd place NL East finishes, and I had high hopes for catching some live Expos playoff games at the Big O. Then the offseason firesale that saw the Expos forced to shed every big name player they had.
I can't get into the Nationals. Never been the same for me. So when Pedro left Montreal for Boston, that became my new team. I met the Expos team in 1999 and got pictures with some of them, including Pedro (Expos were playing the Red Sox), David Segui, and Vlad Guerrero (it was his rookie season). Pedro was awesome, he was constantly cracking jokes and playing pranks prior to the game.
Anyways - the Expos are gone, and for the past 10 years, I've been a Red Sox fan even if Pedro has since moved on. I just love Fenway.Comment

Indians.
I was born and raised in Cleveland, until I moved to Vegas in 1998. I've seen them rise from celler-dwellers to legit contenders.
I've watched players from Andre Thornton and Joe Charbaneau(sp) to Albert Belle and Manny to the current crew.I watched the perfect game thrown by Len Barker.I watched both the 1995 and 1997 WS and was heartbroken both times....it's tough, but I'll always be a fan.Last edited by Segagendude; 04-07-2009, 12:08 PM.Comment

Re: Your Beloved Team
Being raised in the Bay Area, I've been an A's fan since I started collecting baseball cards at the age of 7 and saw my first game at the Oakland Coliseum in the same year of 1982. I wasn't around to see the dynasty of the 70's, but grew up watching the Bash Brothers era, the World Series defeat of '88 (damn Kirk Gibson!) and the World Series victory over the Giants in '89!!! And what A's fan could forget the 20-game streak of '02? Over the past few years, I've been a die-hard flag-waving Left Field Bleacher fan and am excited to see a division upset over the Angels this year!!! Let's Go Oakland!!!PSN ID: mmdmaznn
