Re: Best player to build a team around
I think the best way to start a franchise is to have a pick in the draft between 21-23. Here you can draft Hanley Ramirez in the first round. In the second round you can have either Evan Longoria or Prince Fielder (I like Longoria). In the 3rd round you can get a young starter like Felix Hernandez or Francisco Liriano. Then in the 4th round Chad Billingsley will be available. I couldn't think of any better players to start a franchise with. Longoria and Ramirez w/Hernandez or Liriano & Billingsley. WOW
Evan Longoria, Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Braun and Ian Kinsler are my top choices. I would have to go with Evan Longoria, even though I like Braun a little more because, on top of being one of the top three hitter's in the game, Longoria's already one of the greatest fielders in the history of the game.Last edited by Jason_19; 05-09-2009, 09:54 PM.Comment

Whose roster set are you using? You should think about editing players to get them rated properly and then do a draft.

Re: Best player to build a team around
I know that quite a few people don't like hearing things like that, but I feel very confident in my ability to evaluate talent at any level.
Tom Foley, Tampa Bay's infield coach on Longoria: "I don't think I've seen a better third baseman and I played with Mike Schmidt." I'm not basing my opinion off of this quote. I just wanted to share it.Last edited by Jason_19; 05-10-2009, 07:38 AM.Comment

Re: Best player to build a team around
I'm surprised no one mentions Grady Sizemore, top defender at a more difficult position. He also has ladies.Comment

Re: Best player to build a team around
The majority of coaches, scouts and players would say that what you said is not true. What are you basing your opinion of David Wright's fielding ability on? David Wright is one of the most overrated defenders in all of baseball. I'm not saying that he is bad, but as far as scouting grades go, it's not even close. David Wright isn't even one of top four best defensive third basemen in baseball, while Longoria is already a better defensive player than most of the greatest defenders to ever play the game.
If you study both players, their hitting ability and their defense isn't close in any way. David Wright is a great player, but Longoria is far more talented in every single way.Last edited by Jason_19; 05-10-2009, 05:48 PM.Comment

Re: Best player to build a team around
Greatness, at least in part, is in sustainability. It's ridiculous to be anointing a player who is yet to even play a full season as one of the best defenders in the history of the game. Let's let him do it over a course of time. I am NOT saying he won't warrant the title eventually, but he's 23 years old and has played less than one full season combined time.
That said, I'm not saying you can't pick him to start your team around.
EDIT: And, to be truthful, that is not in any way confined to the sport of baseball.Comment
