I would assume that most minor leaguers are on a year by year contract basis in real life, no? I thought I saw a pop up that said something along the lines of I can negotiate up until a certain time, and then re-sign the player at a minimum of 80% of their last contract. Sound familiar? What I always love about playing these games is trying decide if I should lock down a player for 3 or so years to keep them at a good salary, or else just keep paying them year by year in case they fizzle or become injury prone.

Oh that reminds me CB, did you offer any of your players a player option or else stick in a club option to any of the contracts you renegotiated in the off season?

That makes no sense. All players in their first few years in real life are stuck with thier current contract. Yet after the first offseason, some guys in the game are listed as "New Contract".

Also, when u go to Manage Roster, why do most rookies and minor leaguers have 1/2 or 1/1 contracts?

Incorrect, pre-arbitration players typically only have one-year deals. If you have a pre-free agency player the game will force them to accept any contract you give them. If it is far below what they want they will not accept it until the last day when the game makes them do it.

In MLB if a team were to not give a pre-free agency player a contract or offer arbitration they would become free agents. Obviously, you never see this because it is rarely in a team's interest to just rid themselves of their assets. If they are not offered a contract it typically ends their career or you will see them sign with another team and be in their minor league system.

Just like in MLB you can "buy out" arbitration or free agent years for your pre-arbitration players. Any of these questions could have been answered by running a test franchise to get a feel for the system. While MLB does not allow them to use real contract details the real CBA regulations regarding arbitration and free agency and service time are in place.

I have run about 10 test franchises a;ready to test this out. This is what happened. Cameron Maybin was up for a contract renewal. How is that possible? He is a rookie....I didnt sign him to see what happens and he became a free agent and went elsewhere.

How is what possible? That he came up for contract renewal?

And him becoming a free agent is what is supposed to happen. If you do not offer him a contract, then he becomes a free agent. You can't just not sign somebody, but still have them as part of your team/organization.

HA! Thats my point! I initially thought he was looking for a contract extension and if i didn't sign him he would come back at his current contract. He is a rookie....what happened to the 6 year deal pre-arb? Not the case! Thank goodness it was a test.

Players that do not have enough MLB service to get arbritration and are under a certain amount of MLB service for free agency(forget what the transaction handbook says), then you can choose to renew a player's contract for the amount of money that you paid him during his previous contract. Or you can choose to offer him more, but each is for only one year. Or you can choose to offer him a new deal all together.

But if you choose to not re-sign them, they become free agents. This is how it works in the Show, the transaction handbook explains how it all works within the game.
