If your biggest concern is how The Show will look on your TV, Panasonic makes 720p plasma sets near the $700 mark. (I know your budget is $600, but thought I'd throw this out there anyway)

You don't need 1080p for this game, since it natively runs in 720p. Plus, 1080p doesn't become an improvement until your TV is over 50 inches in size, which you probably won't be at your price point.

Save some money and stick with 720p, and go with a trusted brand. I have a 50 inch Samsung 1080p plasma that I love, but Panny makes great sets at lower prices. I also can't say enough how much I prefer plasma over LCD. I have both. Plasma will save you a few bucks nowadays over LCD anyway.

No, I play on my 24 inch computer monitor that can play up to 1080p. I see a huge difference between 1080p and 720p. The only bad thing is the aa goes to hell when set to 1080p.

The 50+ argument I used before is only valid if you're at the proper distance from your set. The primary benefit of 1080p/i over 720p is that definition isn't lost when you move closer to your set. So if you're sitting closer to your TV than you should, then yes, 1080p will trump 720p hands down. (I only assume this may be your case since you stated you're using a computer monitor. I apologize if I'm wrong)

To all those bashing my notion that 720p isn't bad compared to 1080p, remember the point of this post. Somebody wants a recommendation for a set at around $600. Would you honestly go 1080p for the resolution bump when you'd be sacrificing size? In my book, a quality 42 inch 720p set beats a 32 inch 1080p set every time. Quality over quantity. It's a phrase that's been beaten to the ground, but it's true here.

Avoid the Polaroid, Sylvania, and Memorex brands that Wal-Mart will try to sell you. Go Panasonic, Samsung, or any other reputable brand that's well reviewed online.

-720p will save you money. Brand quality will help bridge the gap between 720p and 1080i/p. (A narrow gap to begin with)
-Plasma will save you money over LCD.

Playing on a Panasonic 50" G10 connected via HDMI to an Onkyo 806 with 7.1 speakers. People tend to forget that sound is an integral part of the immersive experience. With 7.1 turned on MLB 09 comes alive with all the nuances that make you feel you are IN the stadium.

I doubt our friend could afford a new television AND a surround set-up on $600, but you're right. I've got a 5.1 set up and it really adds to the experience for a lot of games. Try Dead Space with a nice sound system and you'll be amazed. (And creeped the hell out)

damn. I just bought this TV about 2 months ago and paid 900. The prices are dropping like crazy on the older models now. Its a very good tv by the way. My ps3 looks and plays great on it.

You need an HDMI cable. Any old one will do. You do not need to buy a Sony brand or "Made for PS3" HDMI cable. I am sure there are "high quality" HDMI cables available but, since I do not own one, I can't verify whether it is worth spending the money on one.

There is no HDMI cable included with the PS3.

You also need a High Definition Television (HDTV)-- Plasma, LCD, Monitor-- capable of accepting an HDMI connection.

I am a recovering latest-and-greatest addict, so I have a 22" Samsung. I run MLB 09: The Show at 720p usually. Every now and then I run the game at 1080i. I can't decide which resolution looks better.

Interestingly, I have noticed that dynamic contrast and dynamic brightness cause the game to look dark. Disabling these two features and tweaking some settings makes the game really beautiful.

As the post above mentioned, you definitely do not need an expensive HDMI cable, like a monster cable for example, that will cost $50 bucks or more. You can get a perfectly fine HDMI cable at someplace like monoprice.com for $10 bucks or less, shipped.

With what I invested in this TV I went out and bought a monster HDMI cable.
I have noticed a slight difference in image quality compared with stock cables but does it justify the extra cost? Who cares?


The Show looks great in 1080p and plays smooth. The motion plus feature makes movement really smooth almost too much as it gives this weird effect like you're watching a daytime soap instead of a primetime TV show or movie. You don't notice it after awhile though.

HDMI is HDMI. It either works or doesn't. Unless the cheaper cable is faulty, you should notice no difference whatsoever. Monster's MSRP is grossly overpriced. There is no need for it, especially with digital cables like HDMl. The 1's and 0's being sent by the cable either reach their destination (you see the picture and hear sound) or it doesn't (you get nothing).
