Heck, even The Show commentators make an issue of it if you try it.

It is one of baseball's longstanding "unwritten rules" like not stealing with a large lead, pitcher's protecting hitters, etc. Some of those rules have been stretched or bent in more recent years as the dynamics of the game have changed (the "quick strike" ability of some offenses make larger leads less insurmountable, for example), but they are there.

So, it's not so much that he can't, it's just that it's generally felt that he shouldn't...in the interest of sportsmanship. Now, whether or not people should think much of sportsmanship advice from people generally believed to find every possible way to cheat their way to victory is a separate discussion...lol. Baseball is awfully schizo with their "traditions."

Also, in the context of the game, I'm all for the CPU bunting. I want to earn it...and I'll damn sure make the AI earn it too...lol.

This one has gone the way of the dinosaur in the juiced ball era.

Had to bump this one after Everth Cabrera faked the bunt in the 9th in last nights Giants no-hitter against the Poodres.

It is true though, but it is a stupid rule. No one does it. The SD guy last night try a bunt to break up Sanchez no no. I say you do it, who cares you are trying to break up the no hitter.

If you break up a no hitter like that, the next guy is getting hit. HARD

this is something I'd eventually like to see SCEA enfore a little more - the game has certainly changed a whole lot but there are some unwritten rules that deserve to be punished - this is definately one of them and also swinging out of your shoes 3-0, stealing when you are up big and I'd like to see more retaliation for hitting opposing batters intentionally - even if the payback isn't delivered in the same game - maybe the next series or even further down the road (since that's how they police themselves these days). Just finished reading the book - "the Code" again , I'd highly recommend it.

I don't think I've seen the umps issue warnings either - that would be a nice touch since they are so quick nowadays to stop the brawls.

really? I can't believe I've never seen them issued with all the games I've played .. . missed that.

anyways there is so much more going on in a game that meets the eye and this is what I love about baseball. You are right though it may be harder to program some of the subtle stuff in , like punishing sign stealing and stuff thats just not in there but I liked your suggestion about cooling off a hot hitter (looks like you edited your post) - and that would warrant immediate retalitaion.

Reading through the posts in this thread it seems as most people dont care about how the players police the game - to me it's my favorite aspect of baseball like the enforcers in hockey .. ..but alas , times have changed

Exactly. I remember when Jim Abbott was pitching a no hitter against the Indians in the early 90's and Kenny Lofton attempted a bunt but was unsuccessful. Yeah it would have pissed people off but that is part of the game.

Re: They obviously didn't include the unwritten rules in this game...

When it's a close game and the hitter is attempting to break up the no-hitter or perfect game in an attempt to get on base to bring the tying run up, or to the on-deck circle, then I have no problem with it. When the sole purpose of bunting is so that you don't get no hit, then that's "cheap". It's right up there with screaming "I got it" in order to distract a fielder so that he drops the ball. Sure, there's nothing against the rules about it, but it's cheap nonetheless.

In the game that somebody mentioned with Curt Schilling on the Diamondbacks, I though Curt was just being a whiney crybaby. When the guy bunted to break up the no-no, his team was only down by one run and there was a HR hitter on deck. So by getting on base, he put himself in a position to steal second and get in scoring position, and then be in scoring position when the pitcher was pitching from the stretch for the first time that game. I think that's a great baseball move. If the score was 10-0 Arizona, then I think the next guy up to bat should have gotten a fastball in his helmet.
