Actually, I am the current starting third baseman for the Boston Red Sox. Last season, I became the first hitter since Ted Williams to hit over .400! In fact, I broke the all-time major league batting average record with an incredible .453 season. I regularly hit over 50 homeruns a season, and...

Re: The real show
i play in an 18+ baseball league in indianapolis...the IABL is about as close to the show as i'm going to get! hadn't played hardball since i quit after freshman year due to not being willing to overcommit to a high school sport and got the itch again about 4 years ago. finally moved to a place this past summer that has a league.
wasn't sure what to expect not seeing a fastball in 9 years, but still ended up having the 2nd highest average in the league and played a decent shortstop.
like i said...the closest i'll get.Comment

Re: The real show
My grandma dated Lefty Gomez, my biological father played for Pawtucket.
I was a lucky kid to have lived in Hawaii and played Little League part of the year and sand lot the rest of the year.
When I was officially 9 but actually 8 I played first string short-stop in a league that made semi finals in the world all-star competition.
When I was officially 11 but really 10 I played the hot corner and made the All-Stars, up until then no one made all-stars except 12 year olds in our 25 year old league. I had a 667 BA that year.
Sorry if I sound like I'm bragging but baseball was my life, it helped me get through a ruff childhood.
I was short (on the outside) One great memory I had was in Babe Ruth I was almost 13 and the guy on the mound had a huge "Round House Curve" that broke 3 feet the scouts had him on their list. I step up to the plate he takes one look at me and calls his outfielders in. The first pitch was my favorite pitch and location a fastball low and inside which I hit out of the park...He didn't call anyone in after that. LOL
My high school Varsity Baseball Coach was a AAA catcher and was on his way up to The Show and injured his knee.
The first time he saw me he called me into his office after practice and told me :
"You look pretty good out there, have you been playing winter ball?" I said "no but I've been practicing with a buddy rain or shine all winter" then he said something that still haunts me to this day " You have the heart guts and talent to go all the way"
I can't tell you what that meant to me...
We have choices in life and I was only good at two things Baseball and art, wish I would have chosen Baseball..
I want to encourage all young guys to follow your heart!

Re: The real show
Was the goal growing up but never came to fruition. I played against Jack Cust, I was a frosh he was a senior, so I didn't like compete or encounter him. He was playing, i was on the bench lol.
We all knew that dude was going to the majors though during our game. He was like genetically engineer by his parent to be a pro ball player. If you remember the movie little giants, that spike kid who was awesome and shows up at the end, thats who we felt like we were playing lol. He didn't do anything special in the game against us.Comment

Re: The real show
maybe its because given the tone of the forum the past couple of days, its nice to see some calm, mature, civil discussion.
Not much really, but by the same token...whats it really hurting?

Re: The real show
I was an All-State C in high school.
Other than that...I personally know Rocco Baldelli (from our little old state of RI) and it was/is great to see him "make it" let alone win Rookie of the Year several seasons ago.
I can only imagine goin pro in a sport....Comment

Re: The real show
I was an all-state pitcher my jr and sr year of hs. Had a lot of pro scouts come to my games. One game they were at I had a 21 K 9 inning(2xtra) game where I threw 180 pitches. Needless to say my rotator cuff went my 2nd year of college. I thought I had a chance, won freshman of year honors and was young. I graduated HS at 17 and my fastball touched 90.
Once you have a shoulder injury you are never the same. I played my sr. season of college as a 2nd baseman (AVG. at best)
I now coach HS baseball and teach PE.Comment

Re: The real show
I was an Little League all-star utility man for my 11 year old team, I played every position except P, SS, and CF, but mostly Catcher and 3rd for my team. Mostly RF on my All-star team, I hurt my knee in a hilarious Merry-Go-Round accident two weeks before the central New England tournament, and played 3 of my worst games ever before being benched and ultimately quitting the team after hurting my knee again. they ended up advancing to the next round before getting beaten. I quit baseball all-together the next year after we won the city LLWS, in pursuit of a terrible football career.
I have a two connections to former big leaguers, my ex-step uncle was best friends with Chipper Jones in school and my ex-step mom made him dinner. Also my dad played softball in a corporate league against a former Tigers? OF/DH, not sure if that is the team and I can't remember his name, but he was a major juicer. Every at-bat he would either hit a homer, hit a HARD shot off the OF wall or stirkeout, this guy was huge! My dad said he was a pompous ***, but I never met him.....Comment

Re: The real show
Closest I came was a tryout with Baltimore and and a year later a tryout with the Royals....
Just didn't really have the size to go with the speed.
Awesome times though.Joshua:
