If you don't use the left stick while batting...

what's the highest difficulty level you're likely to be able to play at with reasonable success?

I don't use the L-stick, and All Star seems to be as high as I can go with hitting, and even AS provides a stiff challenge. I'm assuming it's because the sweet spot is small.

For all of you playing HOF or Legend, are you all using the L stick?

In 09 I never used the L-Stick and ended up at HOF with success.

In 10 I'm currently playing at veteran but will move up to All-Star soon and then move up to HOF like I've done in previous years, and I don't plan on using the L Stick once.

I never used the left stick in 09 and I played it on Legend and achieved 100+ wins to the WS title. This year im giving 10 a try in HOF so far im doing a fairly good but by all means it's no walk in the park.

In 09 and as well in 10... sometimes the L stick doesn't perform correctly. I can hold down on the L stick (in the down direction, not pressing it)...hold it...hold it....still holding it...then swing. and in the Swing analysis, it says I swung in the middle of the zone?? (this is in All-Star or higher)

I see this regularly during games.

But when it does work correctly, I enjoy having the ability to control where or how I hit the ball with the L stick. I like the ability to force flyballs for a SF or be able to hit a ball that is up and out of the strike zone.

Isn't this what the RS is for though before the pitch? I use it a lot in SF situations and it works pretty well.

The R stick can help you adjust your swing...fly ball, ground ball, pull..opposite field, yes that what the R stick does.

But even when I push up with the R stick, if I don't aim low on a ball low in the strike zone, it will become a groundball.

on a totaly different note, the R stick kills the power swing IMO if I use the R stick at all and then use the power swing. I can have Ortiz at the plate in MLB09, get a fastball right down the middle guessed correctly with guess pitch...then press up on the R stick and use power swing and result is pop fly on edge of IF, lol.

I use the R stick in place of the power swing. I never use the power swing and have no problem getting HR's, when I push the R stick up.

That's odd, I usually always push up on the right stick and use the power button mostly unless I got a way one sided contact "no power" hitter up and I have pretty good success

Simply because you are trying to pull or push a ball does not mean you got the timing correct for that effect. If Ryan Howard tries to pull a fastball out and the pitch comes on the left side of the plate he will end up extending his bat to try to push it instead of pull it. Should players simply try to pull the ball instead trying to push it to protect the zone at last minute like they would in real life?

Then you swung under the ball too much or did not time it right. If you hit the R stick up to power swing and then you hit on top of the ball what would be more realistic a chopper or a home run? You still have to execute correctly. If you hit the ball down it is going down if you hit too far under it you popped it up. Do you think when Ortiz is at the plate and he gets in a hitters count and goes for a home run, but doesn't hit it correctly he still gets the home run? That's an awfully strange idea. Simply because you want to do a power swing is not enough, you have to execute it as well.

Any All-Star Baseball Fans In Here? I'm starting to think I'm the only one. The left stick was the glory of ASB. I think The Show should adopt the elongated PCI with the sweet spot in the middle. It would be flippin sweet.

You should use the Lstick. Don't attempt to make major adjustments while the pitch is thrown, it should be predetermined with an occasional minor adjustment under certain circumstances.

                        I use it when:
-Man on first with 0 or 1 out(s). More likely a low pitch so I position the cursor low to prevent ground balls.
-sitting on inside fastballs (I bat righty) while facing RHP's. It's the easiest pitch to quickly recognize and elevate the ball.
-Sitting on outside fastballs against LHP's
-Facing knuckleballers. Minor L to R adjustments made while the ball is airborn.
-0-2/1-2 with RISP. I will desperately hack at pitches w/ adjustments made upon release.

                        I don't use it when:
-The pitcher is throwing wild, possibly fatigued late in the game. It's more often you see those meatballs you curse yourself for missing because you move the PCI because of habit, not because you followed the ball.
-Early or Ahead of the count. Sit on a meatball and be extremely patient.

The list may suggest that I use the L stick most of the time, but it's closer to that of the opposite. Definitely don't use it first pitch and usually not the second, maybe not the third. Be patient. I'll often go an entire AB without using it.

I'm playing on Legend (without lowering the pitch speed) and with F batting skills (RTTS) I'm batting .260-.275 right now, surely on track to hit above .300 when my batting skills even out.

I play on Veteran, don't use the L-stick, and have swing influence turned off. So don't use the R-stick either, and have pretty good success, and very realistic games. I use guess pitch 1/4 also

I use the L stick all the time but when i check i usually find i'm swinging before i move the stick, as shown by the results viewed when clicking down on L3. I have moved the pitch speed down to 0 to allow myself a bit more time to move it.

PS: by the way, the cpu uses the L stick all the time. Check after they swing by pressing L3.
