Re: Do First Basemen ever drop balls thrown in the Dirt?

I saw dropped balls by 1B a lot more doing RTTS in the minors, I don't think I've seen one in the majors yet.

I hit a deep fly to center once and the CF jumped at the fence but the ball hit off his glove and went over...other than that no dropped flys yet.

      This should answer the question...

Only in RTTS at AA level I've seen fly balls bounce out of gloves. I've seen two guys in the outfield go for the ball only to have it drop down between them. The play caller laughed and said someone should have called it.

fielding is def. improved over 09.

while there are still some major problems (outfielder suction into the wall mainly) fielding is done very well.

as for 1B dropping balls at 1st, i have seen a few drops where it hits his glove and drops off.

i think the fielding def. has more effect in 2010 (like u will notice a difference between a great fielder and a terrible fielder)

no longer can you still jack cust at 1B and he becomes a vacuum and makes 0 errors in 150 games.

so it's def. better than 09.

HAHAHA! I took his glove this year and burned it. I don't care if I have to put my backup catcher in the outfield, Cust will not see one inning of defense.

To the OP, I have seen all kinds of misses at first already. I saw one kind of like the above video. I have seen quite a few where the ball skids in the dirt shin high and the fielder can't come up with it cleanly. I have seen the throw take the fielder right off the bag. I have seen one where the fielder jumped for it and it bounced off the top of his glove. I also believe that ratings are important. I have Barton there for the most part, but when Chavez plays first, I have yet to see a missed play at first where he even has a chance at it. He isn't going to get the throw that ends up in the opposing dugout, but he will get anything near him. Sometimes I have Jake Fox there, and most balls in the dirt will pretty much stay in the dirt while the runner is called safe. This might be the first baseball game I have played that really took ratings this much into effect.

Juan Pierre completely misjudged a routine flyball, I stood in the ball landing zone and it dropped about 5 feet behind him! I was miffed at the time but errors are great. Errors have cost me and won me about 3 or 4 games so far. I would go so far as to say there are too many errors in this game now.

Re: Do First Basemen ever drop balls thrown in the Dirt?

Lyle Overbay missed one for me just today. Of course, since Gonzalez had to run a big way just to get to the ball and it was Carl Crawford he was trying to beat out, the throw didn't really matter, but Overbay still dropped it just to nail in the safe call.

BTW, it was a throw in the dirt because Gonzalez was tracking to his right and threw left to first, so it wasn't a straight "error" by Overbay. And since Crawford beat the throw anyway, they scored it a single.
