    one thing i have found with the Pirates is looking to see if you can trade for players who have locked up contracts for a number of years... if you aren't going into the offseason each year with a bunch of guys looking for raises it gives you a chance to develop some talent and win some games to increase the budget... I have noticed Jay Bruce usually locks up for a modest contract, and there are some pitchers as well (Chris Volstad signed a 6 year deal for like 4 mil per) and that allows you some contract freedom with other players... I had to trade McCutchen off because I couldn't get him to lock up before he went to arbitration and was awarded 15.6 mil per season... but he is a great talent and brings back a lot in return
