To those who DO use the left stick. How do you hit an above average fastball? I have moved pitch speed to 7. I've seen several guys on here who play with it at 8. There's NO way you can see a 97mph fastball that's not a meatball, move the stick up or down and still time it right. You pretty much have to just put the pci where you want it before the pitch, right? You don't have enough time to move it up especially. Moving down feels a lot more natural. I'd love to see someone play on 8 pitch speed and be able to catch up to a high 97mph Greinke fastball and make solid contact. I can't do it for the life of me. I have to basically move the pci where I think it's going, and if I guessed wrong I just have to let the pitch go. PROPS to anyone who can succeed like this. On default pitch speed it's much easier.

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
I use pitch speed at 4 so I may not be the exact kind of person you're asking, but I don't pre-load with the left stick. I do look in my batter's hot zone before 2 strikes. I pretty much let everything go that's not in the zone I'm looking in. With 2 strikes, I first look for a high fastball because that is the fastest pitch that can be thrown, then I adjust off of that.To those who DO use the left stick. Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
I finally figured it out. The R stick pre pitch does work (I feel the vibration conformation). I use X to swing on rookie and use the L stick to control where I put it in play. It works, almost too damn well to be honest. I just had a 7 game stretch where I hit 9 homers in my RTTS.According to the manual, the left stick does nothing on rookie. You can't use the power swing on rookie either. I do think influencing with the right stick works on rookie. If you have a dualshock controller, you'll get a confirmation vibration when you use the right stick before the pitch. The RTTS questions I do not know about, but I'm guessing to get 80HRs in a season they are probably playing at a lower difficulty level than they should be.Comment

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
Hitting on Legend at least the L stick is a must. I was tired of hitting pop ups and striking out on high fastballs. What I did was: I started to take more pitches and started to see patterns from the pitchers, e.g. after three straight low pitches they would throw a high pitch, normally a fastball, and then I moved the L-stick to where I thought the ball was coming before the guy made the pitch. It is a like natural guess pitch, you just concentrate on the situation and guess what the pitcher will throw next. If I guess incorrectly and the pitch is not where I wanted, I normally try to take the pitch, even if it's a strike. That doesn't mean I'll be hitting homers every single AB, which is what makes this game great.ephemeralComment

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
Braves fan, read the games instruction manuals. Im not forcing you to play my way, the game itself is telling you that n higher difficulty levels, you MST use the left stick to place the bat in locations to hit those pitches. Why do I have to play rookie if I don't want to use the L Stick, that makes no sense at all. I understand if you want the higher levels improved so it gives you more options but why take away something I enjoy? Why does my gaming experience have to suffer so yours can improve? To advocate taking something out makes no sense whatsoever. Stuff should be added but nothing should be taken out.
If I don't want to use the L stick I shouldn't have to and I shouldn't have to play rookie to play the way I want. Rookie is way too easy. I want a challenge but I don't want to use the L Stick to hit. Why should I have to?
If they force everyone to use the L Stick I probably won't buy the game.
Here is what they should do in next year's game. They should give you the option of hitting based on purely timing or hitting using the L stick. That way everybody is happy.
Why would you want to dumb down the game to a single button press? I don't get that at all. Hitting a major league baseball off of a major league pitcher is the single hardest thing to do in all of sports. I WANT the challenge. How boring is it to simply hit "x" time after time?
Like i said, they make a "timing only" mode. It's called rookie. You seem to not like the fact that since you aren't skilled enough to use the left stick you must play on rookie mode. Guess what? PRACTICE. Or just play on rookie. It's simple.
If a pitcher paints the black on the outside corner, and you swing right down the middle, the ball if not missed completely will go off the end of the bat. If the pitch is inside, and you swing down the middle, you will get jammed. It's that simple. You should have to swing WHERE THE BALL IS PITCHED.
If they dumbed the hitting down to a simle button press om HOF and Legend difficulties, i would not buy this game. You have no complaints because they make a mode for someone who wants timing only. You just don't like the fact its called ROOKIE. Well get in the batting cage and become an ALL STAR.
Why does everyone nowadays want EVERYTHING to be easy. Im a competitor, and i want the CHALLENGE.Comment

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
I play on default all star with pitch speed at 1.
I tried the LS again for the all star game, since the game wouldnt effect my stats lol...I felt okay with it so I did it again with my first post all star game against the Giants
I hit pretty much just as well, pounded out 10 hits vs the Giants....with only a couple of noticeable differences.
- virtually all of my homeruns are pulled, not using the LS..i actually hit a opposite field homer in the all star game.
- Im able to move the LS with the pitch, if the pitcher's fastball is 88-92 mph. If the fastball is 94+, I have to cheat and anticipate location.
- I think this is the way to unleash Jose Reyes..i hit .245 with him in the 1st half..with 16 doubles. 3 homers, adn 2 triples..I think I'll be able to steer the ball better and get the ball into the gaps.
Hell, I hit a triple with Rob Barajas, because I just poked a ball where the RF had to run a mile..he miss played it..the ball rolled to the wall lol..if thats reyes..its an inside the park homer.
- on 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 3-1 count and 2 strike counts, I leave the left stike alone.
So basically my hitting was just as good, with a bit more location variety: most of my hits are pull field, and right up the middle, leaving LS alone.
I was able to identify pitches and work pitch counts, just as I eas previously.Comment

Sporty, our settings are almost identical, with the only difference being that I have Pitch Speed at 3.I play on default all star with pitch speed at 1.

Like you, I have been struggling with Reyes; I'll try using the L-stick with him and see how it goes. I've been messing with it in batting practice and while I won't use it all the time, I do see how it can be helpful in certain situations.Currently Playing:

How boring is it to use auto fielding? I do that as well. I guess according to you I'm not allowed to do that either. Everyone plays a different way, there is no right or wrong. Why can't people grasp that?

I have no issue with Rookie other than it's just too easy. I don't understand why you would be against multiple options? I don't understand why the L Stick is a MUST. People are obsessed with playing exactly like major league hitters do, absolutely obsessed with it. They forget it's just a video game and is meant for our enjoyment. Everyone plays differently, one way is not better than another. I don't understand why people can't understand this.
If I get more enjoyment out of using timing only what's so wrong with that? I paid my $60 just like you did, we don't have to play the same way.Last edited by Braves Fan; 06-24-2010, 12:22 PM.Comment

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
I play on All Star and I only really started to hit once I gave up on the left stick.
Occasionally I'll move it up or down if I think the AI is going to throw high or low but that's probably about 5% of the time.Comment

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
Hey guys. Nice discussion you've got going on right here.
My two cents: I hit (and always have) with the left stick, b/c I think that's the way it should be played.
With that being said I have no problems (why should I?) with people not using the L-Stick.
Sportyguy: You asked how people can hit a 95+ MPH FB with the left stick and you also asked how people used the left stick.
I play on HOF and I always have the L-stick in the natural position before the pitch no matter the pitcher and the count. Of course I think about what could be coming, and basically I take the pitch when it's not what I was looking for (let's call it the natural Guess Pitch if you like). With two strikes I just react. I often check swing on balls (and sometimes strikes) at the corners.
I do have gaps in my swing, but they vary. I like how the CPU adjusts on your hitting tendencies and I take pride in adjusting to the CPU's adjustments.
With great pitchers like Ubaldo, Verlander, Greinke and CC I tend to have trouble especially when they have great breaking stuff. When they throw a lot of strikes on the corners I'm toast, just like in real life. (of course I sometimes get lucky when I react perfect to a perfect pitch) When those pitchers are missing their spots outside the zone I take, and wait for a better pitch or a free pass. And when they miss inside the zone I move the L-Stick accordingly and swing the bat.
Hitting the way I do has given me this: hard time against aces, but sometimes I put a couple of runs up/good times against pitchers with less stuff and control, but sometimes they are 'on' and own me.
Btw I played with the Twins (month in 'chise) and was 7th in AVG and 12th in HR on HOF. Use Struts' sliders with pitch speed on 5.
Again I think everybody must play on the level they like. I sometimes play an exibition game on vet with hitting sliders maxed out for the heck of it. But I also think the game is more fun when you have to grind out every AB.Last edited by LenmB; 06-24-2010, 06:40 PM."Every disadvantage has its advantage" - Johan Cruijff

Re: Do you use the L-stick when batting?
Yes, I use the L-stick.
I am a very competitive gamer/person.
I used to play baseball games all the time growing up but just stopped playing after they started disappointing me during the ps2 days.
Being so upset with madden this year I decided to trade madden for the SHOW.
BEST DECISION I COULD HAVE EVER MADE.
I started 3-27!! did not know shiet about the game. Did not know about PCI or about using the r-stick and I got spanked. Then I started using the r-stick and also started training my eye to be more patient and swing at pitches in the strike zone. I went from 3-27(not knowing anything) to 30-40 (27-13) when I started learning more and developing a good eye. I then began to start using the L-stick and since that I have been 30-5.
IF YOU DO NOT USE THE LEFT STICK, YOU ARE CHEATING YOURSELF!!!
I must agree, when first using the l-stick it is very hard to stay disciplined. What I do is focus my attention to move the PCI wherever the ball goes but I ONLY swing at pitches WELL within the strike zone. By doing this, I make solid contact 90% of the time with pitches that are in the strike zone and not just over the middle plate. I was hitting about .250 and now im hitting .319.
If anyone wants a good game add me Im Hbats1000Comment
