In other words, yes this is frustrating but also a delightfully realistic challenge. Adapt! (And I don't mean "turn on guess pitch and cheat!")
What he said. I can't tell you how many times I have swung at a pitch over my head (at least according to the announcers) thinking it was going to be a curve ball. I am so glad in those situations that no one is watching me play, because I fell pretty stupid doing it.

I thought that going from 36" standard def, to a 52" hi def would help me see the ball better, but instead it seems to make it a million times worse.

I have been playing on this TV for about a month, and still can't seem to get it down.
This may also have to due with response lag with your tv. Alot of people have said there is a bit of a delay with some HDTV's with lag response. This could severly mess up your timing and be a major cause of the problem.

This would explain a lot to me. I have both a standard def and HD TV that I play on and last night, after weeks of playing on Standard, switched over temporarily to the HD and got blown out. I actually had a harder time pitching, too, but I also think the umps were making a A LOT of bad calls in relation to the strike zone. If I had been a real pitcher, I would have gotten ejected....

I really wish SCEA would implement a 'calibration' system. With such a timing based game, it can virtually make The Show unplayable on some very expensive televisions.
