It is interesting to see the different results from the hitting modes. I play with everything analogue but what I would like to know is how 'unsim' is this compared to timing?

While i do want realistic stats (which I do get although only played about 30 games in my franchise) does analogue hitting get vastly different results ie: Am I more likely to hit a homer with a poor hitter because i have timed my swing correctly in analogue than i would if it was timing?

As I said i get pretty good stats so far, so I think I will keep playing with analogue for the fun factor.

In the quest for getting real sim stats you probably really need to remove human interaction altogether. (or just watch real baseball)
Exactly. Manager Mode is probably where you'd find the most sim results, since it's all ratings/stats-driven and you just control the roster.

Glad to hear about your results with Analog; I'm getting ready to start up an Orioles Franchise using all Analog controls.

To me, you should use whatever setup brings you the most enjoyment. If you can get a good sim experience, then roll with it.

I don't think that analog produces results that are too far off, but i still find that with timing hitting my players stay in a very realistic range, while not taking the fun out of hitting. It also raised my walks and such since i can focus on being more patient at the plate. You still miss some balls in the middle of the plate, but for the most part you still crush most hangers.

This has been exactly my experience as well.

          Question about timing hitting:

I like to guess the type and location for every pitch. Obviously, I'm wrong on one or both more often than not. Do I get a loss of contact and/or power each time I guess wrong? I'm wondering if the risk outweighs the reward, as I could be hamstringing my players more often than helping them.

Classic 1/4 on Veteran, btw. And this method helps me be more patient and work the counts.

More variation than analog and zone? I'd say that comes down to how good you are with each of those modes. In my case, I seem to be a bit better with the user controlled options than timing. That means I square the ball up better on analog and zone than the AI does for me on timing (at least on all-star difficulty).

So for me, yes - using timing mode probably would result in more hit variation because the AI is hitting somewhat more balls off-center of the PCI. That's what causes your weak choppers, bloop or seeing-eye singles, and the like. But this is going to be different for everyone - my results may not (and probably won't) equal yours. It's very possible that someone could be worse with the user options than the AI timing would be - in fact, I'm pretty sure it's like this for me when I move up to HOF.

Glad you guys are getting something out of this <s>nerd-out</s> test.

If it's the same as recent years, yes, you do take a contact penalty (not sure about power) for guessing wrong. And if you guess both wrong it stacks, so you're working with a much smaller area that you can make solid contact.

The in-game strategy guide has some great info on how GP works - in particular the "Guess Pitch" and "Other Tips" in the hitting section. I know the guide can be found in the pause menu on exhibition games - not sure about during seasons. One of the most fascinating bits is how the AI knows when you guessed right (just as a human player would), and may try to avoid throwing that same pitch next time.

I'm loving the results I'm getting with timing, and this is what I've seen so far as well.

Also, thanks to bcruise for running those tests and confirming what I thought was happening. I didn't spend too much time with analog, so my personal sample size wasn't big enough. But it just didn't "feel" right once I got the timing down. Was getting too good of contact for my liking with my newly created RTTS player.

Since moving to timing, the results have been great for me.

I'm still on default all-star and haven't even thought about touching a slider or the difficulty. Plays great out of the box for me up to this point. I'm interested to see if that changes once I get into playing franchise with full rosters. I've spent about 95% of my time so far playing as a RTTS 2B.

I am playing default all-star except I dropped pitch speed down 1 notch. My results have been excellent with timing hitting.

Personally I use power swing on hitters counts. Mostly on 2-0 and 3-1. I sometimes use it on 3-0 depending on the situation but more often than not I don't swing on 3-0.

I see some threads about the hitting options are starting to pop up again. As we get ready to play The Show in 2012 it's fun to think about your approach in regard to gameplay methods and options.

Read through the original post... how do you feel each hitting method is best utilized? What about the addition of Zone Analog hitting and the most realistic way to utilize it for a sim experience?

I'm looking forward to the zone analog method.

It worked well for me in 2K and I think it was best to bring it to The Show as well. I assume that the pitch speed will have to be brought down which I'm in favor of. This can compensate for the amount of time it takes to push the thumb stick up vs the time it takes to press the button.

As usual I'll turn off the guess pitch option which I never liked and I'll hit by tracking the ball. Hopefully there will be more realistic results this year using analog because having the computer decide whether I have hit over or under the ball gives me the impression that the game is fixed.
