Re: doesn't get dark fast enough in night games?
The other fact were missing is that the topic starter is a Yankee's fan. The Yankees and Red Sox are notorious for having longer game lengths so it gets completely dark an inning or two before most of the other MLB teams since they take about 3 hours 15 minutes to finish, while the other teams are at about 2:45-3 hours. I know for Twins games in mid summer it's completely dark about the top or bottom of the 7th which is 2 hours or so into the game.
Here is proof just to show a little bit more about it. It was written just before the 2010 season so it may have changed a little bit after last year, but I doubt by much.
I think the day/night progression is done extremely well. Way better than last year that's for sure, and last years didn't even bother me all that much.Last edited by bwiggy33; 03-29-2011, 01:36 AM.NHL-Minnesota Wild

hard to see but its 9:02 there

playoffs but game didnt start yet so its gotta be around 8pm

Again, I'm not saying this is the end all, be all of this game, but it seems weird if they chose to use the longest part of the baseball season to use as the default exhibition game. I know when i think of a 9 inning baseball game i dont think of daylight until almost 10pm at night. I personally think of like 9pm at the latest as being when its at least extremely close to dark. Re: doesn't get dark fast enough in night games?
No offense to the OP but most teams home games aren't in the sixth inning at 9:34 PM. Most teams home games are in the 9th inning (or even finished) by that time.
The progression works great as it is IMO. If anything, maybe they can introduce some code that accounts specifically for the longer game times at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park.Comment

The average time of a MLB game is 2 hours and 51 minutes and 3 hours 30 minutes for playoff games. You're basically saying most baseball games are over in 2.5 hours? Nope.No offense to the OP but most teams home games aren't in the sixth inning at 9:34 PM. Most teams home games are in the 9th inning (or even finished) by that time.

As per Elias Sports Bureau
The average time to complete a nine-inning game in the 1970s -- not including on-field delays -- was two hours and 30 minutes. That increased to an average of 2:57 in the 10-year span from 2000-09. Through Thursday, this year's league average was 2:51, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
In the playoffs, game times have been longer. Last season, nine-inning regular-season games lasted an average of 2:52, while in the postseason, that number jumped to 3:30, according to STATS LLC.Yankees, Manchester United, Chicago Bears, New York RangersComment

Re: doesn't get dark fast enough in night games?
It's on a per pitch basis, and dependent on the time of year. So mid summer, your 2:51 game isn't going to be dark until around the 7th/8th inning. Now, if you get some longer innings with longer at-bats, it could be sooner. In the playoffs, due to time of year, it will also, again, get darker sooner, as it does at the beginning of the season as well. One thing the real life playoffs also have that this game doesn't, is more commercials, which you're not figuring into it your stat of 3:30 games
Regardless, the adjustments they've made this year are near spot-on, and if you play through a season, you'll see this reflected more accurately. Last year night games got dark WAY too fast.Last edited by DickDalewood; 03-29-2011, 02:38 PM.Comment

Re: doesn't get dark fast enough in night games?
I didn't say most games are finished in 2:30. I said some games are finished in 2:30, which is true. My point stands.
Using your average of 2:51, if the night game starts at 7:05, the average finish time would be 9:56. That puts the end of the sixth inning about 9:00. At the height of summer, at 9:00... there is daylight left in the sky.
Median time would be better to use than average anyways, since the average time is inflated by outliers in New York and Boston

if a game starts at 7pm, then you are saying most games are in the 9th or even over by 930, or two and a half hours, which is just incorrect. It's not the end of the world, just not correct.Yankees, Manchester United, Chicago Bears, New York RangersComment

Re: doesn't get dark fast enough in night games?
I said most teams home games are in the ninth inning by then, which I still think is likely true. Sorry if my post was not clear. I did not mean to say that most games are done in 2:30. I do accept the average you presented but my point still stands.
I think SCEA has it right.Comment

not really sure if you are aware of this but you do realize the 9th inning in the last inning of a game right? lol
