Guys have told me to do this in the past:

    1) Use practice mode
    2) Play in a franchise for with a team you don't like, knowing its just practice so you wont get made that your fav player is hitting .180
    3) Play exhibition games (I like to use the online rosters and play a current game that is happening in real life)
    4) Play games where you bat with both teams and just hit.

I think their should a rule for all new players to the game - If you really want to get better at hitting - You must pick something you think you need to improve on, and you must get at least 1000 at bats (About 30 games), with the same settings, focusing on one thing before you give up. If you don't see improvement then you can stop trying.

Also lets talk about what you need work on... Or PM me... or anybody else on the board you think might be able to help
Well I'm not a "new" player to the series. I had trouble hitting in '10 and '09 so that's why I made a statement I'm at my wits end. I do exhibition games, practice, etc. I've tried custom cam. I simply can not find a comfort zone with this game and it happens every year lol

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that was the case... It sounds like you're not seeing the ball well. Are you chasing balls wide from the strike zone? Or are you swinging and missing a lot? Which camera do you like the best?

I really believe hitting is all about timing. This is the main factor why the CPU hitting improves as you play on higher levels. They still chase pitches on higher levels, but their overall timing when swinging is better. They also are able to foul off more pitches because of better timing.

You have to get to a point where you can see all types of pitches and your "finger memory" is reacting accordingly. Here's a test... Go into practice mode and do the timing drill. Then go call someone on the phone and start playing. Don't even pay attention to the game, focus on your convo and just hit the ball in the background. It's a great way to train the right side of your brain to just react to what you see. I bet you will surprise yourself on how well you do. That's the way it has to be in the game. This way you can just trust your instincts and just "see the ball and hit the ball".

Lastly I'm going to sell you on using an custom offset to the outside and lowered camera that I've been using. You can get to the thread here ----> http://www.operationsports.com/forum...ball-best.html

#1 Put pitch speed to 0.

#2 Start out everything on rookie, no sliders.

#3 Get in the batting cages and see a bunch of different pitch types, how they are released, when to hit, when to take.

#4 Repeat 1-3. I guarantee this will help your hitting out.

Also, who cares if you're playing on a lower difficulty? I'm playing rookie hitting with veteran pitching and having fun games. 7-2 and just having a blast with the game for the first time since '08

i will be trying this out next as i could hit in 09 and 10 with no problem but 11 im really struggling. I have been lights out pitching with the Indians but i played 3 straight games and scored 1 combined in those 3 while giving up just 4. Between the camera and this i think i can get my hitting going

            Update June 25th, 2011

The Hitters Count (When You're Ahead In the Count)____________________________________________ ____

            1. If you are in a (1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 3-1) count, you are in a “hitters going count” and should be looking for that "good pitch to hit."
            1. Look Something in your favorite area of the plate that you usually hit hard. Knowing "your pitch" with each player is crucial in this situation. If you have no idea where in the strike zone he likes it best, then you cannot take advantage of the "hitter’s count" situations.
            2. I would suggest to turn on the strike zone with the hot zones on, so you can remind yourself. Honestly, I bet these are the situations that most gamers who are struggling - DON’T handle properly.
            3. No more than a month ago, I used to tell myself "okay I’m swinging to matter what” or It has to be a “fat fastball right now the middle”. Well, maybe my batter likes the ball middle in? Or maybe he likes it on the outside half?
            4. And don’t just look fastball; it could be a hanging slider if that’s the pitchers best pitch.

            2. But in general, it is good to know that these "hitter’s counts" are not only ideal situations to look for a ball in a certain area, but are what are known as "fastball counts."
The pitcher does not want to risk throwing another ball and falling further behind in the count. So, you will usually get a fastball in these counts. If you know you are likely to get a fastball, your likelihood for success skyrockets. Remember "hitting is timing".

            3. In addition, there is a higher chance that fastball is going to be "fatter" (thrown more to the center of the strike zone).
            1. Because (as earlier stated) the pitcher does not want to give you a base on balls.
            2. These are pitches you should be able to hit to all parts of the ballpark with authority.
            3. Be aware that on the 1-0 count, although you are ahead, it is early and the pitcher may take a chance with a different pitch. Or he may throw a fastball to a certain location.

            4. Pitchers that have great control of a variety of pitches and may be willing to risk throwing something other than a fastball on a "fastball count."
            1. This is called pitching backwards. It is called this because, naturally, it is the opposite of what is expected in the given situation. Good pitchers rely on these counts to get an easy offspeed or curve ball over the plate.
            2. If you've been paying attention to the pitcher's tendencies during the game you might want to "look" for a backwards approach. The pitch generally thrown is that particular pitcher’s "best" pitch or the one he has the most confidence in (so pay attention to that during the game if you don’t have the confidence bars on).
            3. However, studies show that a fastball is still the most likely pitch, especially with relievers.

            Knowing all that, in summary;
            1. Remember that a large part of hitting is timing, you should look for a particular pitch "Your Pitch in Your Location".
            2. If you get anything else, let it go by.
            3. When people say be patient at the plate. This is most important time to do it. DON'T CHASE in THIS SITUATION! Waiting for your pitch!
            4. At the very worst the umpire will call it a strike and you deal with the next count.
            5. Note there are times in these counts where you might want to use a different approach with runners on base. This will be discussed later.

NEXT TOPIC...... "NO MAN's LAND" COUNTs (0-1 and 1-1) and PITCHERS COUNT (2 STRIKES)..........................

I tried out the camera. It does seem to help see pitches a little better ... or so i thought. Had two strikeouts through about 4 innings. I'm now in the 7th inning and i've K'ed 10 times and have 2 hits through 6 innings and losing 3-0 using the Yanks against the Mets. I'm not hacking away. The K's are mainly either looking or swing throughs.

Yep, pitch recognition is crucial. Find the release point, focus on it as soon it leaves the hand, and see the ball for as long as you can. Never swing at a pitch you haven't seen before. Use your recall of what you seen from that pitcher and you will have better vision.

Commit yourself to getting 1000 (30 Games) of just focusing on having your eyes in the right place the whole time pitch recognition and you're right side of your brain will get in-tune and it will become second nature.

For example, I'm still working on this skill. I've got the fastball, curve ball, getting better with the change, but am horrible at the slider. Look at what Jared Weaver and the Angels staff did to me last night :

                  <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="791"><colgroup><col style="width:48pt" span="11" width="64"> <col style="mso-width-source:userset;mso-width-alt:3181;width:65pt" width="87"> </colgroup><tbody><tr style="height:15.0pt" height="20"> <td class="xl66" style="height:15.0pt;width:48pt" height="20" width="64">IP</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">AB</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">H</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">R</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">BB</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">SO</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">HR</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">SINGLES</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">DOUBLES</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">TRIPLES</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:48pt" width="64">FOULS</td> <td class="xl66" style="width:65pt" width="87">MISSES</td> </tr> <tr style="height:15.0pt" height="20"> <td class="xl67" style="height:15.0pt" height="20">9</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">34</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">8</td> <td class="xl69">5</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">2</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">12</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">1</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">6</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">2</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">0</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">21</td> <td class="xl68" style="border-left:none">35</td> </tr> </tbody></table>
He killed me with the slider to same hand batters. 35 misses and 12 SO's in a game is horrible. My goal right now is have under 20 misses (MLB average is even lower at 13). So my point is one pitch can kill you, mine is the slider. But as you can see, I still got hits in the game because I was able to recognize his other pitches. Even though this was a HOF game and I still scored 5 runs, I don't consider this a good game. Making contact with more balls and not misses is what I need to improve against the slider ball pitchers.

So the first thing I did this morning was load up practice mode - Put Jared Weaver on the mound. Called up the right handed side of my lineup and watched his breaking pitches in the discipline drill. Trying to learn how to recognize the pitch and maybe change the camera angle vs him to get a better tell on it. We all struggle vs something but its about how you can learn from it and not let it beat you again and again.

As for the camera, I use all 2-3 of my custom camera's during a game. But we can talk about that in my other post if you want. As for striking out... What type of pitches did you strike out on? Also you might be too patient. You shouldn't strike out looking unless you're surprised with a pitch you've never seen. As for swing through's, check your timing on them, I bet you were Very Late or Very Early.

I'm still working on the NEXT TOPIC...... "NO MAN's LAND" COUNTs (0-1 and 1-1) and PITCHERS COUNT (2 STRIKES)..........................

But just a preview photo to illustrate how the thought process of "being willing to take strike 3" is a bad idea. In the picture below, I tried to get tire out Livan Herandenez by getting him to throw a lot of pitches. And on two strikes I let the ump decide on balls on the black. Well look below (I had 6 SO's on called strike 3)... You should be in protect the plate mode on 2 strikes! It's a must! As you can it wasn't a good day for the ol ball coach! LOL.. Lessens learned!

BTW after 4 innings of that crap, I just got more aggressive early in the count and knocked him out the game in the 5th with 3 HR's

So do most big leaguers. Circle button for contact swing, which I typically would use, but if the guy has good contact ratings, I'll just let it rip with a normal (x button) swing.

Also depends on situation. If there's runner(s) on, Circle button almost always generates a pop-up or grounder for me- that's bad for moving the runner(s) up. Sometimes a strikeout isn't the worst out. Now, I'm not advocating K'ing everytime there's a runner on, but if your batter has a poor contact rating and is a double play threat and there's a runner on 1st, I might just give let him strike out.

THIS STRATEGY SHOULD ONLY BE USED WHEN IT'S A LATE-INNING CLUTCH SCENARIO WITH THE TYING/GO-AHEAD RUNNER IN SCORING POSITION WITH LESS THAN 2 OUTS!

*I read 5 pages on this thread, sorry if it was already covered and i missed it. great sticky, btw*

                          RTTS Mode, 52/52, 25/25 contact/power, 55 clutch...

I'm trying all the hitting types, and I'm mixed about TIMING and ZONE and how to use the LEFT stick to aim or place hits? The ZONE has the yellow circle, bat barrel I assume? I can't tell if you can aim or not in TIMING mode?..

When I guess the pitch perfectly, the yellow circle 'locks' on an area where the pitch is going, but its always in a strange spot and I'll ground or foul usually, I've never had a great hit in this situation? What's going on with that and whats the best way to hit with the left stick?

The only other thing that's really bugging me in RTTS mode is sliding, more specific, sliding while stealing? I have the settings where they should be to control the runner and slides as manually as I can (assist) but I have yet to hook slide right either head first or knee after 5 RTTS base-running practice with Juan Pierre. I won't even talk about how i was only able to steal twice in 75 attempts..

-Can you place shots with the left stick?
-right stick doesn't let me hook-right slide?

I would never let any batter strike out in any situation. I'd rather have him bunt. Also for the situation you're talking about, that's why you have a pinch hitter with good contact and clutch ratings sitting on your bench. So use your pinch hitter and go for your game winning double.

My opinion on using the contact button is to use it with everybody with 2 strikes. My team batting average has gone up with the combination of fighting off pitches and getting more 2 strike hits like a cheap blooper over the top of infielders using contact button almost exclusively. If you're not using the contact swing with 2 strikes you're going to hit for a lower average and just help that pitcher get more confident. Trust me I've done it both ways. Contact is the way to go!

                              Updated 6/30/11

                              No Man Land Count (0-1 / 1-1)

I call these counts no man's land because neither the pitcher or the hitter has an outright advantage. Pitchers will nibble and hitters will still try to be selective. So from a hitters prospective:
                              1. If you are even in the count 1-1, or down 0-1, you can continue to look for "your pitch", and be willing to take a strike if not something you like.
                              2. Or, if you are uncomfortable with 2 strike counts... you might adopt a different mind-set. You may wish to approach these counts with the idea that you are going to hit the ball if it catches lot of the plate any where and maybe even stay back on the ball and hit it "the other way." One reason for this approach is that you will naturally track the ball a fraction of a second longer, giving you more time to decide if the pitch is going to be a strike. Additionally, this approach gives you the ability to hit pitches away from you, or on the "outside corner" of the plate.
                              3. Just know, that pitchers like to nibble with borderline pitches to see if batters will chase them. If they do, the pitcher is in control. If not, he has to adjust. Pitchers generally like to nibble on the outside of the plate as that is the most difficult pitch to learn to hit. Pitchers with good control will "come inside" to set up something "outside" on the next pitch

                              ------------------

                              Pitchers Count (2 Strike Counts)

                              In the Hole (0-2, 1-2)

Once you have two strikes on you it is imperative that you take a "battling" mind-set. This is "war" between you and the pitcher. Do not give the at-bat away just because you have 2 strikes.

                              1. No longer look for Your Pitch. Cut down on your swing, keep your head still, and intensely track the ball the moment it leaves the pitcher’s hand.
                              2. Your goal is to "get a piece of it" if it is anywhere close to the strike zone. If you hit it fair. . . fine. If it’s a real tough pitch in a tough location. . .foul it off. The more pitches you make the pitcher throw in these situations, the greater your advantage. The pitcher cannot remain perfect. Sooner or later he is going to make a mistake and throw you a good ball to hit.
                              3. The more pitches you make him throw, the more fatigued he becomes, which may lead to more mistakes. Don’t let the umpire decide, keep battling. Many a hitter has been called out on a third strike that was "close." Don’t risk it. Keep battling. Chances are you will get a better pitch to hit. This is "two strike" hitting, or "protecting the plate," a totally different approach than when you are ahead in the count.

                              Even or Full Count (2-2,3-2)

                              1. A pitcher might challenge you, especially if you aren’t a slugger. If they do it’s a going to be a strike with probably their best pitch.
                              2. If you are not a slugger, you might still get a pitch on the black but not guaranteed to be their best pitch. They could be trying to fool you, so beware that the pitch could miss wide if they don’t have good control

Every felt like you're always one step behind at the plate? Like the pitcher always throws the opposite pitch you're looking for. Well, I came up with a idea that will make you feel like you have a chance to jump all over one and maybe be a step ahead of the pitcher.

One of the hardest things is face a pitcher who has good stuff and throws the ball 95+ and a good breaking ball with 10+ MPH differentials. It’s a challenge to keep your timing for the fastball but also recognize breaking balls and somehow slow yourself down during mid-flight.

I feel like to combat the batters timing dilemma, an alternative is to "mentally guess" your pitch in the first two pitches of an at bat. (This not using the guess pitch feature in the game).

                              1. For example, first pitch look for a fastball. If you think it's a fastball swing away! If it happened to be a change up and you missed; tell yourself it's okay, I was guessing.
                              2. Another example, you just got a breaking ball called a ball just missing the outside corner... On the second pitch, guess fastball. If get something that looks like fastball, swing away.

On pitch 3 and after, think about two pitches you think you might see. Then turn off you're "left side of your brain" and just react and hit.

                              1. I have found myself a much better hitter later in the count when I thought about two pitches I will most likely see first, and when the ball is thrown, I'm not surprised to see one of the two. So instead of a reactionary hitting it's more like a responsive hitting.

Overall, this method can improve your chances to maybe crush one early or just be more responsive later in the count. Also, it really does help you pay attention to any patterns by the pitcher during the course of the game.

My friends make fun of me but it works for me. I'm 3-2 currently. Only thing I've really noticed on Rookie hitting is being able to check swings better and has stopped me from those miserable chases for strike 3.

I think this years Rookie-Veteran is equal to MLB 10's Veteran-All-Star (batting-pitching). I have no idea how these guys play on HOF.

                                Anyways, good stuff!
Yea, I don't really like hitting on Veteran. It seems incredibly difficult, even following the advice here. I'm relatively new at the game, mind you, but I'm getting the feeling that I don't think I'll get better at it there since I'm pretty my average on Veteran level is below .100 with hundreds of strikeouts.

I can say with 99% certainty if I find myself online against a player that plays HOF, I'll be losing 99-0 in the first inning before recording an out.
