The only issue is that at rookie or veteran, AI tries to give us some advantage willingly, so the playing field is not level. But for the purpose of feeling "missed opportunity," it's a great idea to play at these low levels a handful of games. When you start feeling pity for CPU for playing down to your level, that's when you are ready to go up IMO.
Thanks nomo, great point about hitting .220 on a higher level. That's pretty silly. I've read some of your post on trying to get realistic results from the game. I'm curious on how you play the game (years of experience, level, sliders)?

Press circle button (contact swing) before next pitch is thrown. Helps A LOT and, yes, you can still occassionally hit one out too

I'm still a noob for the Show haha. Just picked up the last year's game...

The only thing I know that I'll stick to is analog for all controls, pitch speed 10. I think the right levels for me at this point is all star for hitting, HOF for pitching.

I love the Show because I can bring the pitch speed up to the MLB level and want to experience how I'd hit against the best (at least in video games...). At the lowest pitch speed, you are facing typical HS fastball, which know I can hit and in the batting cage I can hit fastballs in 80s, so I just want to challenge myself there. That's one way of realism for me, hitting against the best pitching.

But then if I'm playing a franchise or something, I want the game results to be realistic. There I want the team stats to be roughly in line with the MLB ave. That sorta thing I consider realistic, so I make adjustment accordingly, including pitch speed...

I usually decide to move up or down depending on whether I hit above or below .270 or WHIP of 1.3 or something after playing half a season. If I do better, I move up, worse I stay where I am. But this is RTTS though; I haven't played franchise this year yet, so I might have different experience there.

It's fun though... I was hitting .270 - .280 just before the all star break, so I was thinking of moving up a level a few days ago. But then I got in a funk because my boss/colleagues at work pissed me off and I start hitting the pitches as hard as I can as if they are the schmucks. Then I got overly aggressive and now my ave is down to .250... I even got Ked 5 times in a row in one game LOL. So don't bring the bitterness in real life to the plate... since the Show is obviously more important. (what?)

Like, mrgoose said, contact swing is a valuable tool -- use it. It will help you cut down on the Ks, especially when it comes to fouling off pitches around the edges of your PCI (it also enlarges your PCI) or if your timing is slightly off.

In terms of approach, it's easy to fall into the trap of swinging at anything close -- or that appears to be close... hello changeup/breaking ball in the dirt! -- with two strikes. This is what the pitcher wants, and especially at the higher levels (HOF & above) the CPU pitcher will try to tempt you to chase borderline pitches when ahead in the count.

I feel you have to be willing to take a called third strike every now & then to avoid chasing. I probably have at least one or two called 3rds a game, but also walk 3-4 times on average and I'm finally hitting fairly well, even after moving up to HOF. If you can't/won't take close pitches with two strikes, walks will be scarce and strikeouts & weak contact will be commnon.

At higher levels like All-Star, I've found that on 2-0, most pitchers throw a change-up to get a cheap strike while you swing for a fastball. If they don't have that, they'll try to get over a fastball that you have a good chance of hitting, or if they're a good pitcher, they might throw junk out of the zone to get you swinging. on 2-1, that's your best chance to hit a fat fastball. 2-2 and 3-2, just use the circle button contact swing, and wait out a good pitch. with contact swing on, you'll be able to foul stuff just out of the zone you'll usually swing over, and you'll also be able to check swing with more success.

Thanks Geronimo for this thread! OS should really put together some of these great threads so you can get the most out of each game.

Nomo made a great point...I may just go up to All-Star again because I always seem to want to take the first pitch and 50% of the time its right down the middle.

There is so much positive feeback on this forum, I just wanted to summarize some of it one thread. The search feature is great, but is a pain sometimes.

Yeah ,I didn't realize that Veteran pitchers approach is so much different, until Nomo made it clear. You will be in a 0-2 count a lot if you just sit on pitches at that level. But it could be a good level to learn your timing, hit early in the count, or be patient-not worry about the score-and and know what it feels like to see a meatball. It helps because when you play on Allstar or above, you will recongize that pitch the 1 time you MAY get it in at bat!

I started my Yankees franchise and wanted to post some results using points #6 and #5 in the first post.

Spring Training Game #1 Vs the Phillies

                        Lost 5-3

You can see in the first chart (Clint Hurdle's Goals), I didn't get to 17 productive at bats. In the second chart (from the end of the game batting breakdown screen), I didn't take enough pitches. The 24 missed pitches were majority balls. If I don't swing at those - I probably get 2-3 more walks, which could have lead to runs. I didn't put the chart of what the Phillies did - but just know they had 60% taken pitches and only 7 missed pitches. Both teams had 10-12 strikeouts (expected when both teams Aces pitched the first 4 innings)

These stats give me a goal to work towards. It's the game within the game.

I think this game cheats and has built in slumps no matter what you do.

I can't buy runs right now.....and I replay a lot of swings I feel I was right on that I strike out on.....the ball goes RIGHT THROUGH THE BAT.

This game is great, but the game cheats and will screw you and I'm not sure how to avoid it. I swing and the ball goes through my bat and it strikes me out, but I'm throwing the CPU balls a foot outside the strike zone and it's CRUSHING home runs off me.

I don't think this is a problem that can be solved by tinkering with the sliders either. The game just cheats. Plain and simple. I'm not bitter or complaining because I "suck" at the game either.....unless the replay is glitched and not a true REPLAY of what happened, balls are going THROUGH my bats and I should be hitting those balls, or at the very least fouling out to stay alive.

I get struck out 10+ times most games and I'd say most of them are the game screwing me. I have a very good eye, I don't chase at hardly anything and all I see this game do is strike me out on balls that go through my bat on the replay.

I don't really know what to do. My timing seems perfect but either the game or replay is glitched or the game is just deciding to screw me.

I would suggest to work on one aspect of your game at a time. For example tell yourself I want to be a better hitter when men are in scoring position. Make sure to concentrate and note why you succeded or failed in that situation. I have been concentrating on taken more pitches and working the count better. After looking at the chart I posted above. I can honestly say that now I'm missing less and taken more pitches on a consistant basis.
