Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips

Anyone have a particular strategy for hitting against high velocity hurlers? The pitch speed I'm at right now feels right to me as the guys who throw low nineties I do not have a problem getting around on, it's more of the guys like Verlander, Jimenz, Johnson, etc. I struggle getting around on.

I had to take the pitch speed slider down to 2 and for the most part thats pretty comfy for me. I would suggest turning off guess pitch and the PCI, this has helped me locate and read all pitches faster, i first got the idea for that in this thread. There also were a few posts in the middle of the thread about tv settings and how that may mess the timing up. I dont claim to be an expert by any means, just my two cents.

Does anyone else feel late when using timing hitting as opposed to analog? I feel like when I use analog the movement keeps me ready to swing at anything and take pitches better whereas with timing I am usually late on fastballs. Not sure if this makes sense to anyone haha.

Maybe I should ask in the slider thread but I have a problem not related to not being able to hit but rather only hitting home runs and too many. I am playing a franchise with the White Sox and last game I hit 8 home runs. I am playing on the default difficulty using analog batting , guess pitch and no feedback(I think). I do have the power and contact all the way up because I started not being able to hit or score at all but now I score too much and mostly by home runs. I know the easy answer is to lower the power but problem is I can't seem to hit anything but home runs. My question is what sliders should I change to lower the home runs but at the same time be able to at least get hits. It seems doubles are at a premium and nothing gets into the gaps much. Most of my extra base hits come from balls I hit off the wall rather than hits in the gaps.

"So, my committment over the past several games has been to relax when I get to two strikes (even 0-2) and recognize that THIS IS BASEBALL. Once I get to 2 strikes I then convert over to contact swing almost exclusively. I MIGHT use the standard swing on 3-2 but that is a very situational decision."

This tip by drsonoma has changed the game for me dramatically. Before at 3-2 I would revert to 'normal' swing, but sticking with 'contact' (apart from the odd situational decision as drsonoma says) has increased my walks, lowered my strikeouts and increased opposing pitchers count. I used to see the contact swing as just something to foul off balls, but it is surprising how many base hits also come from it.

I was having a similar problem with sliders all the way up and guess pitch on. I did not hit quite as many HRs but that was the only way I scored.

Turn guess pitch off and start to lower power and possibly contact a little at a time.

Once not reliant on guess pitch I got more variety of hits.

And this thread is great at helping understand what and when to look for.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips

last night I played a couple of games with analog hitting and found that my timing with analog is way better than button and I am able to hold off on pitches better. A lot of the time on timing I would say in my head don't swing but my thumb would still press the button. analog seems to help that. I mashed 12 hits and 5 runs when previously I would only get 0-1 run. Is analogs timing more forgiving or am I just better at timing it?
So my to its try analog, seems like more offense can be accomplished.

I don't know if it's been said before, but I try to follow the ball from the pitcher's glove all the way through the windup, release, and until it crosses the plate. It seems to work for me. Guys that have funky windups I tend to have problems with... Side-armers too. Definitely contact swing with 2 strikes to protect the plate, also.

Am I the only one who finds aiming with the left analog stick in this game completely ridiculous? I liked it a lot in MVP where you could simply point it UP, UPPER LEFT, and UPPER RIGHT to influence the direction of your swing whereas in this game, it has you pinpointing the PCI with the left analog stick right where the ball is thrown(i.e middle of zone, outside, down, corners..etc) which to me does not mimmick the how you really bat in baseball.

I'm annoyed, 4th season into my road to the show, i can hit very well in tripla A... have a .304 avg throughout my whole tripla A career, with 85 home runs. but every time i get called up to MLB i have a very very tough time hitting anything, my timing is a little off which is weird as i don't in other game modes against mlb teams.

any ideas or tricks to help me?

I use the PCI solely and use zone hitting on veteran. I haven't changed the pitch or hitting speeds at all. My hitting technique I felt was pretty common but here's my tips.

I always leave the PCI centered before the pitch. Early in the AB I only look for a fastball right in or near the middle of the plate. I lay off the off speed and breaking stuff early in the count. If the pitcher gets a two strike count on me, then I'll go after the pitches on the fringes trying to prolong the AB until I can get something to drive. My approach is to move the cursor to the point where the ball will be when it reaches the plate. I did a lot of practice with the hitting training modes but the best one that really helped me out was the timing mode with a hard throwing pitcher (95-97 fastball). It really forced me to attack the point at which the ball would be when it reached the plate. That in turn gave me a better sense of timing both the fastball and off speed stuff with the ability to recognize where the pitch was going to end up. I've seen my home runs and hits go up significantly since that one training mode. If I start chasing real bad or lose my personal ability to recognize pitches, I go back to the training modes and it usually clears right up.

My RTTS STATS are as follows for my CF.

                            AAA- GMS 64 AB 223 AVE .368 H 82 R 27 2B 18 3B 1 HR 8 RBI 40 SO's 32
                            AA- GMS 42 AB 162 AVE .395 H 64 R 28 2B 18 3B 0 HR 10 RBI 36 SO's 11

I don't draw a lot of walks though. Those stats might not be great, but I'm pretty pleased.

NOTE: I did try the pure analog & analog plus zone hitting and here's my impressions. I didn't like the fact that hitting was not necessarily based on how well you actually timed the step and swing as often even when I was perfect/perfect, it didn't result in a solid hit, especially with pitches low, middle and high over the middle of the plate. To each his own. Hope the tip helps anyone who might be struggling hitting.

I normally just use the power swing button in my RRTS

i tried to use the analog but i can't seem to get it down on the show keep check swinging it so i won't bother with it anymore
