Getting the computer hitters to swing and miss

I am having so much trouble getting the computer hitters to swing and miss at sliders, curve balls and splitters. All my swings and misses are on fastballs and change ups. It's so frustrating when you make a perfect swing and miss pitch and the computer either fouls it off or takes it for a ball.

There is a similar topic that I think will answer your questions or at least give you a fix... basically you need to lower the contact slider by a click or two.

Search for CPU Plate Discipline AI ... I tried posting a link but it keeps putting a weird directory in the URL.

I have. I only have 2 clicks on computer contact and I've lowered the computer foul frequency by 1 click.

The only thing I can say then is that it has to do with setting up the pitches. You have to put a lot of strategy into the pitch selection.

I like to think I do a pretty good job of setting up my pitches. I can throw 3 or 4 straight fastballs on the outside corner and have the hitter foul them off and then throw a nasty slider down and it that gets fouled or is taken for a ball just on the edge of the strike zone. Probably could/should be called a strike. Most of the hitters in the majors will strikeout on that pitch.

I can throw a fastball low and away, fastball high and away, changeup low and away and then nail the inside corner with a 12-6 curve that's fouled or taken for a ball.

That's just 2 examples of pitching I've actually done.

I had trouble with this in last year's game. Changing pitch location helps (high/low inside/out) and throwing pitches intentionally out of the strike zone helps "expand" the zone a little. I played a game last night and I struck out the side and two of the K's were on pitches outside the zone. I'm using TNK's sliders.

Fastballs always set up off-speed... but you have to keep in mind the location. The off-speed pitch has to look (location) like the previous pitch. If you hit the outside corner with fastballs then drop a change on the outside or a slider that starts there and runs away. If you want to come in with the curve, throw the fastball inside before that. Before the break of the off-speed it needs to look like it's going to the same spot as the fastball.

Also, keep in mind what offspeed you are throwing to which hitters. Try to avoid throwing breaking pitches that break "into" the batter unless you're going to miss inside. Try to throw breaking pitches that move away or start inside and stay inside. A Righty vs. Lefty or vice versa matchup usually has the pitcher throwing more changeups than breaking pitches because you don't want to throw pitches that break in to the hitter. Conversely, a Lefty vs. Lefty would throw all kinds of junk...just don't leave it over the plate.

These are just a few strategies, but really just check online for specific pitchers and what they throw to RH Batters and LH Batters.

I don't have issues with this. I've seen highlights of others as well show they can do this successfully as well.

The game seems to really reward a certain pitching mindset. I think it really depends just how you approach pitching in general. Some will struggle while others will succeed.

And no - I did not touch the sliders.

I just guess it's impossible to throw that Randy Johnson type slider that looks like it's going to hit the hitter in the foot but they swing at it anyway.

Agreed, far from it, i often strike out 3/4 CPU batters per game swinging, as you say, its all about setting them up.

The game seems to really reward a certain pitching mindset. I think it really depends just how you approach pitching in general. Some will struggle while others will succeed.

And no - I did not touch the sliders.

Same here/ No issues getting misses (or strike 3's looking for that matter)
Like what's already said, you have to set them up and don't be afraid to walk batters by throwing out of the K zone..even with 3 balls.

Well I do walk batters as a result of trying to get them to chase. I guess it depends a lot on the pitcher you use.

Your pitch release matters too. I've struck out the CPU swinging with pitches in their hot zone, but they just couldn't catch up to a FB, or swung over a CB, due to having a perfect release. Mixing it up and not trying to necessarily paint the corners really helps, IMO. If it's a pitcher with bad control, I've even aimed right down the chute, knowing he's not going to actually hit that spot.

Regarding the release - I use Meter and the irony is most of my swing and misses occur not when I have a perfect release, but when I completely screw it up and it still winds up around the zone.

The perfect release usually gets them looking when I'm painting it right on a corner. I'll get the swing and miss when I'm trying to throw it up in the zone, screw up the meter and it winds up at the bottom of the zone. lol
I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed that, had that happen?
Maybe the moral of the story is, it's also not a bad idea to switch that up as well to keep batter's uncomfortable.

Overall I've noticed the things the OP is saying, but through the exhibitions I've been playing my number of K's has seemed fine, so while it can be annoying at times, it has not been a big issue to me.

I really don't have a problem getting strikeouts. It's just all the foul balls and then I eventually make a mistake and they hurt me.
