1st time The Show player: how do I steal base with a single runner

MLB 12 is my first baseball game and I'm really liking it, so addictive. It seems that a great way to score more runs and get into advantageous situations is to steal base, obviously. However, I don't know how to control individual runners when playing single player (non-RTTS), and I have multiple men on base. The "Control tutorial" for base running is very confusing. I'm using the default setting for L1/R1 lead-off, etc.
My question is how do I gain control of individual runners. Example, I had men on 1st and 2nd, I hit what is really a single, but my guy on second successfully scored a run but the guy on 1st got picked off going to third, when I would have been happy with one run and the second guy to remain at 2nd.

Any tips on the exact controls would be greatly helpful. The tutorial says something about using the Left Analog and an Icon???
Also, what if anything is different about ordering steal attempts pre-pitch?

Very simple and to the point - once you get it you should have NO issues:

Left analog points to the runner you want to control based upon the location in the bases window. The face buttons are always the same base you want to send them to: square is third base, triangle is second., etc.

Just point and queue. If that guy on first rounded second and you want him to go back, you should've pointed to him with the LS (up makes sense here since he was near the top of the diamond) and press triangle.

However, this was what I was afraid of, this means I have to actually pay more attention to the actual location of the runner in real time and have the necessary reaction time.

I think it's reversed in classic: The buttons are runners and the bases are tied to the LS.

I do the individual steal thing, but the pitcher ALWAYS steps off and my runner just stands there(like 10 feet from the bag) without attempting to run back.

I've never had that happen. Are you extending your lead too? It sounds like the CPU is stepping off because you have too big of a lead.

It doesn't matter if I have a lead or not, whenever I try to steal with an individual runner, the CPU ALWAYS steps off.

Are you early stealing? I've never had the CPU step off when I try a queued steal.

In that situation, you'd hold the L-stick toward first base ("right" in batting views), and press L2 anytime before the windup starts. You'll get a rumble confirmation, and the runner from first will break with the pitch, while the one at third will stay put.

That's a queued steal.

I did it a diff way. I always moved the left stick towards first, and then pressed the triangle button(so he'd advance to 2nd), guess maybe that's why it didn't work out?

Yeah, that's why - you were doing the early steal command, and activating it too early that the pitcher saw it and stepped off.

On a queued steal the runners break on the pitch no matter when you pressed the button, so it's much safer.

Are you using Classic BR? I think it would actually be O (from batting view) to target your runner, and LS to tell him which base.

Edit: I am not sure, as I don't use Classic BR
