Madden is created with the Xbox in mind as its primary console. It's a console that uses DVDs. The Show eats up essentially an entire Blu-ray Disc.

There is a massive difference between those two games in regards to download size.

I would think it would be upward of 40GB, and even at 20GB they would be alienating a small portion of their userbase.

All this speculation about the size is meaningless to me, and I don't see how downloading would alienate the user base.

I don't know why you two are so set against downloading the game when we are saying, just give us the choice.

Let's see... first of all, I said a portion of the userbase; there are PS3's out there with 20GB and 40GB HDDs, you know? Although not many, they do still exist. And I'm not set against it, as I would love to have the game fully installed on my HDD, considering how much I play it. Being realistic though, despite what any of us want, it's not going to happen for these reasons or whatever others the developer may decide. Period.

Anyway, I'll give my SCEA-like response on the matter... no further comment.

I don't see how those who couldn't download the game because their console is limited would alienate them from those who could. The freedom of choice is still with us, or at least I think it should be.

It isn't that those who can't download the game wouldn't be able to have it. I mean, they could buy the disc.

There are some pretty huge games on the store already; I think the biggest is upwards of 20GBs. What's the maximum it could be? Aren't blurays maxed out at something like 35GB? Considering the "standard" PS3s currently available have ample space on the hard drive, it wouldn't surprise me to see them start rolling out even the biggest games, especially first party ones.

Also, on a side note, you can download stuff overnight and have the system install the game for you then shut off automatically. Just go to power down your system after starting your download and you should be prompted to continue the download, and then yeah, it will all be done automatically.

I say this to support the case that total GBs isn't that big of a deal anymore.

I read somewhere that the average vita game is around 1,5 GB..

anyways even 2.8GB is just like 10% of the size that people assume the PS3 version has. how come?
no cut scenes, smaller textures whatelse does the PS3 have that the Vita version doesnt?

I have Madden 13 size 5495 MB downloaded from the PSN and it wasn't an issue.

All PSN downloads are slow, at best you are going to use about 35% of your download speed because of the poor infrastructure. Take the time to read what was posted. It is also an issue because downloads either stop or slow down to a complete crawl if you use the PS3 for anything while downloading. The system was just not designed to use the internet correctly at all.

Keep in mind that with 12 you could choose to install 5 or 10Gb extra for the game to run smoother. So that's 10Gb just extra data. So we can only imagine the actual size on the disc.

ok so wait... so the 5 GB DL was to make load times faster, but to have dl'd the 10 GB the game would have run smoother???? i'm so freaking confused....

They should make early downloads of new releases one of the perks of Playstation Plus.

If they were to say, offer MLB 13 on Friday March 1st as a digital download exclusive to those with Playstation Plus, I'm quite certain they'd see a boost in membership.

Do an early Friday release exclusive to members for other games as well, and Playstation Plus all of a sudden starts to look a lot more attractive.

Never really understood why they aren't doing that already, as the mininmal costs would be easily offset by game sales and new membership; unless they have some sort of agreement in place with retail sellers. If so, that agreement should be renegotiated.

Look at Amazon and Nintendo. Nintendo pissed them off and now Amazon doesn't sell new Nintendo hardware. They still list the items, but its all from 3rd party sellers not Amazon.

Stock is often determined by pre-orders, so they wouldn't necessarily get stuck with copies sitting on their shelves.

Besides, a lot of retailers have been leaching off of publishers for years now through the sale of used games, of which the publisher doesn't see a single cent. Kind of a strong bargaining chip there, and it also brings up another point about digital releases: there are no used game sales of digital downloads.

Probably the biggest thing holding back digital releases is the infrastructure itself. There is still a high percentage of the user base without solid access to support a digital marketplace, but the benefits are clearly there. Of course if and when an all digital marketplace ever gets here, the "early release" will be a moot point.

And you think lag on PSN is bad now?

There are plenty of ways to fix high demands on servers. The Xbox, Steam, and other PC downloads have them in place to handle large demand on any given file and do not experience the issues PSN does. Sony can fix these issues if they just invest the money. It is part of the problem of making the PSN free is you get a crappy network. A better quality network should have been one of the perks of PSN+. They will have to fix the issue next generation because it is costing them sales of games and movies that people will not take the extra time to download on PSN when you can download them elsewhere in much less time. At the very worst make PSN+ connect you to faster servers for downloads, but even that plan will leave Sony in the dust next gen. Sadly they probably have to move the whole thing to a paid network just to support the needed upgrades.
