I think Fangraphs bunches all fastball types together when you look at pitch data outside of the pitch f/x tab, although cut fastballs seem to be separate and there seems to be a correlation between its increased usage and the declining usage of fastballs

There are cases like that for sure... like splitter and changeup. When you browse pitch data, a pitcher suddenly seems change his pitch selection mid-career. That's often actually a change in pitch identification within the system, and not the real pitch selection change made by the pitcher. I wonder if he corrected for this type of thing.

      Interesting read nonetheless.

Yeah, but I'm sure you guys would figure it out given you're track record with figuring out the correlations. It would take time, but in the end I feel having the option, however they can get high K rates in, is worth the trouble a change in the rating/sim engine would have.

So I just faced Strasburg and he has something like 120 innings pitched with 75 strikeouts. I looked at the leaders and it is way off. Justin verlander has 107 IP and 88 SO. Felix Hernandez has the same 107 pitched but only 57 k's. this is on July 2nd. So yea, this seems to be an issue.

Yes, it is really screwed up. I have fixed it with my edits so the mlb average for K/9 is 7.25 in MLB 13, while in real life MLB it is 7.5 K/9.

BB/9 is also about 0.8 to high per game with the default rosters. I also fixed this so it is 3.2 BB/9 on MLB 13, while in real life it is 3.0 BB/9.

I'm not very confident that this can be easily patched. I've seen attempts to patch issues with the sim engine before (most notable in my mind is Madden. 08, I believe it was) and it didn't work out. I hope I'm wrong.

Great question. I think we finally realize who plays this game and who develops the game. The issues are glaring and obvious.

Here are my stats from a 73 game rivalry series between the angels and the athletics.

                  LAA-K/9--6.78 OAK-K/9--7
                  LAA-BB/9--3.32 OAK-BB/9--3.12

The rest of the stats are spot on.

I have confidence that this will be addressed in a patch. I don't plan on starting a franchise until after the OS Full Minors roster is out (which usually comes out on or around opening day). So there's basically a month for SCEA to patch and fix this. The one thing that would reassure me is a simple acknowledgement. Has there been one? Do they know or think this is an issue?

I just did my own simulation to test this out and to be honest, I think the numbers are off, but not as bad as people are making it out to be.

My leader was Chapman from the Reds. He had 202 strikeouts in 228 innings. Should he have more? Definitely. But its not as if he had 15 strikeouts. Most guys were at least close to averaging a strikeout per inning pitched (the top pitchers that is) and some were slightly above.

Stephen Strausburg had 188 strikeouts in 182 innings.

Again, I hope this is patched to generate even more realistic numbers but I thought it would be further off than this.

I actually thought the same thing, it was off, but not THAT off...but it certainly jumped out at me as one of the first things I noticed. Also, I felt like relievers k numbers were even worse...but I really didn't do a real thorough scan of #'s.

Strikeouts are consistently down by almost 5 combined per game. That's a lot of strikeouts over the course of the season and a lot of opportunities to "see" the ball being put in play; which unfortunately is resulting in pretty remarkable overall team averages.
