I usually played timing in the past, but I switched to zone this year and I don't leave the PCI in the middle, I follow the pitches as best I can and swing at what I like. Timing may be more realistic but I prefer to move the PCI myself. Like timing, on zone your going to swing and miss too and things won't be perfect. I also see a better variety of hits, probably because when moving the PCI I may just get enough of a pitch to bloop a single or maybe I got on top of the ball and hit a liner. I really don't think neither timing or zone are better than one another, just personal preference.

Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
I agree. I dont want my hitters crushing the ball every time I have good timing. In baseball, players do swing above/below the ball, or just miss the "sweet" spot, even with great timing. As long as I end up with realistic stats, I'm ok with the pci being sporadic. That is the best part of timing! I think its just a different philosophy people have when playing the game, but as I said above I dont even know where my PCI is I turn that display off and play the game. That is where the ratings come into play. I don't want my PCI to be perfect on the ball every swing, even with perfect timing. Players whiff on pitches all the time, mis hit the ball, etc How often do you see Pop flys even by the best players in the world? I'm betting those times your PCI misses completely more often occur when players with lower plate vision/discipline stats are batting as it should be. Timing hitting models the differences between different batters better than zone.
I know that with Zone the size of the PCI changes but that is not a big deal once you master zone you will be just as good with Adam Dunn as with anyone else at hitting the ball in the center of the PCI. You can't beat timing hitting! I've never touched zone hitting but thinking logically about how they both work I imagine you get better hit variety with timing as well. There is just too many positives for me.
Just turn off all the junk displays, thinking like a batter, and enjoy the glory of the finest simulation baseball ever created!Comment

I should have been more specific. It drove me crazy 1 game , totally cool, they were even having bad timing and bad pci placement at the plate and getting hits So I kinda looked at it as one of those kinda games. Feels different a bit rough but I like.
I have the display on and you would be surprised by how many are way away from the pitch. I was hitting some dog days of the season so figured my guys were reflecting that. In that 1 game tho it was bad bad.I play MLB exclusively with my cousin. Usually looking for info on Franchises. We played minor league baseball as 9-10 YOs on the Zephyrs.Comment

Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
Ha ha. I'm in the same boat with the people who want 100% sim, as close to the real thing as possible so saying I shouldn't be able to get a hit every time up is crazy. That's not even close to what I'm talking about. What I'm saying is playing in Toronto on turf the ball should not be dying before it rolls out of the infield. I also shouldn't see a ball getting scalded down the third baseline and stopping in the outfield. That ball rolls to the wall 100% of the time and on turf it for sure isnt going to happen.
Secondly, the hit variety is off this year. Last year I saw all sorts of different bloops and choppers. This year, like I said before, is an inordinate amount of low line drives to the infield. Maybe this game comes around for me, but as of now it has taken a step back from the last two or three years.Comment

Oh ok, I see what you are saying, I misunderstood the first message. My bad. I agree the ball physics do get a little weird sometimes.Ha ha. Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
I went back to timing several games ago and my first game I cranked out 8 runs on 15 hits, then I was shut out with only 5 hits. I believe I am going to stick with timing, I really wasn't a fan of zone for the few games I tried it.Comment

Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
I've always played a/s level and use the timing method when batting. I am finding batting frustratingly hard this year, a surprise since the devs said it had been made significantly easier. I understand why ratings play such an important part when the user is batting but the downside is that a long run of bad results, with hardly any runs scored by the user, just makes the user want to give up because the game logic seems to be loaded against him, whatever he does. I know I could just drop batting down to veteran, but I've always played a/s and don't want to do that. I appreciate the many fine qualities of this game, but, boy, whatever the devs say, hitting with timing is not one bit easier this year IMO.Comment

Agree...it's getting a bit frustrating for me this year, I'm dropping to veteran soon and lower some of the sliders to compensate.I've always played a/s level and use the timing method when batting. Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
I'm by no means good at this game, but I'm playing on Veteran, using Zone, and my guy is batting about .525 right now. Everything is pretty much default, such as not adjusting any sliders. I'm doing really well this year, surprisingly.Comment

Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
Yeah the expanded timing window probably affected those of us that use Timing as their hitting interface. In fact, I can verify that fact as when I use Analog hitting, it's night-and-day the difference. The very early or early swings in Timing turn into good or late swings with Analog.I've always played a/s level and use the timing method when batting. I think it's just going to take extra time to get used to the new window. I don't think the PCI is misplaced on purpose or anything, it's just that our timing is off and that throws off the PCI location.Currently Playing:

Re: Does anyone else think timing is too sporadic this year?
I had to turn the pitch speed nearly all the way up and I have never played with the pitch speed higher than 6 the last three editions of this game. You have to force yourself to wait a split second longer. Not easy I really preferred the older coding for timing/zone hitting.Yeah the expanded timing window probably affected those of us that use Timing as their hitting interface.
