Re: The mysterious "square button" Power swing?

My most recent experience with power swing is... last night, tie game in the 9th, I hulked up with Middlebrooks trying to hit one deep or in the gap with a guy on 2nd and he muscled one over the right-center field wall for a game-winning HR... awesome way to end a night of the Show...

I use it on the regular. All different scenerios. If I need a ball hit hard, have a power hitter up, need to get the pitcher out of his groove of owning me, all out guess, etc. It's there and I use it. I remember years ago I was only successful with Jose Reyes by using power swing. The AI seems to use it it's fair share, too...

Re: The mysterious "square button" Power swing?

In my RTTS is pretty much exclusively use square. Considering the amount of gimmies and pitches dead center over the plate 1st pitch I cant help but use square. I crush the the ball most of the time, currently at 55 HR on the year in AAA and have hit 87 in total throughout AA & AAA. Square has already given me two walk of wins through the minors... so it's working for me for me.

Though given I based my stats more towards power hitting when I created my guy, there might not be so much of difference between power and normal hits. Really haven't improved his stats past mid 60's.... and I'm still crushing balls so I say its working.

I will admit though that I do end up with a lot more ground outs and pop ups with it as the contact isn't as great but considering I'm still in the minors I and sitting at a .486 AVG, don't really need to hit for contact yet. I might need to change that going forward though.

I generally use 'X' normal as a backup or if I'm really far behind in the count and cant seem to get on base I'll use 'O' contact swings.

I only use O with guys that aren't good contact hitters to begin with.

Yeah, I would use square all day if I was playing on a difficulty that was very easy for me. I like the challenge of playing at a higher difficulty, so if I use square I often get burned and get a weak grounder or pop up.

Considering I sucked to begin with at RTTS I'm for sure going to bump the difficulty up when I hit the majors. Hence why I haven't really focused on getting my batting stats up any higher than above average.

I get the feeling pitches in AA & AAA aren't all that great and tend to throw a lot of balls up in the zone just asking to be smacked. I will probably have to start focusing on contact swings / hits in the majors just to stay in the line up I imagine.

Besides once I've maxed my contact and power it would be stupid not just to swing for contact anyway.

Might be an idea to start giving circle a shot - since i got traded in AAA to a team 22.5 games behind lol

Re: The mysterious "square button" Power swing?

                Interesting discussion...
I use normal swing most of the time, like a vast majority.

I only use contact swings if the batter has a low vision rating and strikes out a lot and even then only with 2 strikes and say a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs--situations where you REALLY don't want a strike out.

If I haven't been aggressive enough in early counts and the CPU starts throwing 1st pitch middle-middle, I will take a power swing. This year it seems to result in more squared up balls rather than pounding into the dirt when the batter misses by a bit.

One other time I will use it is when I guess right on pitch & location and I use that rarely as well. If I'm expecting them to go for a double play, I'll look down or down and towards third, swing influence up, and power swing. This gets me some 2 run homers and some long fly outs, and some double plays still.

That's about it, I usually use normal swing but let the situation dictate otherwise.

You should absolutely be using it with power hitters in good counts imo. You will crush the ball if you square it up. It is a bit tougher to do, so you have to know your own hitting tendencies. How often do you center the ball up, that kind of thing.

It's hard for me to use it... even with power hitters. I play with the Rockies and even with Tulo and CarGo I very rarely use it. If I see it's fat and I power swing and it results in a ground out or pop up... I am just going to think to myself, "what if I would've just normal swung?" Normal swing still allows you to crush the ball, especially with power hitters. It's not really worth the risk in my opinion..

Re: The mysterious "square button" Power swing?

I actually used it for with regularity for the first time last night, and it resulted in 4 home runs by my Rockies, all of which came on the "power" swing.

I hit 2 with CarGo, who entered the final week of April with exactly 0 homers. I only used it on pitches that I felt were in the big part of the zone. There were only a couple of instances that I made poor contact, resulting in a pop up or weak chopper.

Needless to say, I'll continue using it going forward.

I am a classic type guy who uses the meter for pitching and timing for hitting. So I also use classic 1/4 for my GP. I guess low fastball about 98% of the time because that is the only pitch I want to swing power for. If I get a low fastball with Stanton or harper... Its gone with one press of the square button. for everything else I use X to let the game figure out how the ball wants to be hit by my player.

                              I use it and I don't think it's placebo.

                              Here's where/why I use it:

If I guess a pitch correctly and have properly gauged the speed of that pitch in-game, I will often take a good hack at it early in the count. You get your HRs from this, but more than that I think the benefit is an increased chance of punching a grounder or low liner through the IF gaps or getting one just over the IF's head.

If I'm ahead 3-0 or 3-1 and I think the pitch is a good one, I'll let it fly if I have a strong hitter. Sometimes I'll go with it on 2-1.

I really try to use all the buttons in different situations, though. I go normal swing until I'm at 2 strikes. After that I go with the contact swing to shorten up and foul more balls off. I think they're all useful in their way.

Ramone Russel uses it. Cannot speak on the frequency. But thats enough for me. I swing power every time jus ab but that's how my teams built too.
I play MLB exclusively with my cousin. Usually looking for info on Franchises. We played minor league baseball as 9-10 YOs on the Zephyrs.
