Re: Was this years game a disappointment for anyone else?

JMO but I think some of the frustration lies with the state of the video gaming industry. If you are disappointed, to whatever degree, with the show, you have no other true options. Everything is basically one and done. EA has football locked up, The Show has baseball locked up,( for all intents and purposes, I know there is technically another game), 2k basketball etc. And there doesn't seem to be a new baseball game in the future from what I can tell. The lack of variety and any game companies natural hesitation to allow to much customization is going to leave gamers who don't have what they want feeling more frustrated and more wiling to pick at seemingly small issues.
As for me I have played this game since before it was called The Show. I remember when you couldn't even save your player alterations in season, you had to redo them before every game, so I have played this for a long time. My take? Something does seem off to me. The only year I truly didn't like the game was '09, and this seems closer to that than last year, which I thought had an incredible variety of game types. By that I mean you had pitching duels, barn burners, aces getting knocked out of the box etc. I would not describe it as broken, or unplayable at all, but I have not had as much fun playing it as in other years, particularly '11 and '12. Why, I haven't played enough to know why but I just feel the game seems lethargic, for lack of a better word. Maybe I just need to play more and maybe make some slider adjustments.

Personally this is the best baseball game I've played (still have my ps2 plugged in with MVP in it)
the thread title makes a lot of sense when calling it a disappointment. if you are having high standards (set by previous iterations) then even a solid to good game with some flaws can be a disappointment. like if you expect to win a world championship, then already being the 2nd best on the planet (which is outstanding) is a disappointment.

1- Adding a single A system to each team. The "no memory" excuse doesn't fly with me on this one since there were games on PS2 that had single A teams. By adding single A teams, roster makers won't have to pick and choose which prospects and minor league players to keep and/or get rid of when they reach the 90 player max.

2- Fix the archaic stat tracking in franchise mode. If I'm in the year 2015 in my franchise and want to see how many doubles Evan Longoria had in 2013 or what Matt Moore's WHIP was in 2014, I should be able to do so with a simple click of a button, period. Again, the "no memory" excuse is a cop out. There was a whole thread about this one already and besides the usual suspects, everyone pretty much agreed with me.

3- Fix sim stats. There were several threads about this one already so I'll keep it brief. The league leader in strikeouts in the year 2013 shouldn't have 160 of them.

4- Make player editing/creating more customizable. I want us to be able to edit hot/cold zones, player contracts, etc. There have been plenty of baseball games before that allowed us to do all of this so there is no good reason not to let us now.

5- Overhaul player progression/regression. Too many guys' ratings are nosediving in their early twenties.

Those are my five issues with the game. If they fixed all of those then the game would be as good to me as the usual suspects already make it out to be. I have little to no issues with the actual gameplay, but some of this other stuff just turns me off from sticking with a franchise and that is the only mode that I really enjoy playing. They probably won't address more than one of these in any given year, but a guy can dream, can't he?

I'd love to see all of this (I've always wondered why there was no A-ball in the farm system - and no R leagues for that matter...).

I don't get the memory excuse either. Granted, a console probably isn't as powerful as a PC, but if OOTP can do it...and handle 1000's of teams, etc...

OOTP doesn't have nearly the same graphics and gameplay engine...it's more of a text sim. But I would love to see the rosters expanded on next gen, which I think we will.

Then they need to tweak it.

Real life hitters guess. Heck, real life hitters KNOW Rivera is going to throw his one pitch - yet he dominated for his whole career. Getting what you're looking for doesn't mean you'll get a hit.

If guessing makes you basically get a hit, then that's the issue. They should tweak that instead of giving pitchers pitches they don't have?

I am not that savvy on how the whole memory gets allocated, but I believe there is only so much space on the disc/console for the game. If they put a stadium on it, it takes up space, regardless of whether or not you're using it at that point in time. Maybe someone who knows more can answer that.

We cannot change stuff like height, faces, etc. of major league players because of the MLBPA. We have the options to create our own players, and could re-create them, but there are certain options locked on the SCEA mlb players. I am not 100% if the MLBPA blocks the ability to change contracts, but I know in the past SCEA has had restrictions on how close to real life they could make them.

If you're asking for the ability to set a fictional players contracts in the edit screen, that's not a bad idea, but I don't know if that's possible/allowed.

Yeah I'm not 100% sure. It could be numerous other things. That was just an idea I heard that makes sense. It's just ridiculous to say we have a poor create/edit player feature because of that.

Re: Was this years game a disappointment for anyone else?

Although I was disappointed by this years game, does not mean the team was disappointing. I fully intend to buy the game again, but didnt like some of the changes.

I was an RTTS guy and hate the change made with presentation....HATED the change.

Also I liked using guess pitch in RTTS but not in franchise...hate the guess pitch feature change as well..

I like some changes like scouting and drafting direction and GM capibilities but think they still need tweeking. I bough every version and never got bored and never wished for the previous version are playing the new one but this year I almost instantly felt disappointed.

I had the meat ball bug that was cleared up and really couldnt stand the new timing window but did like the new physics..I look forward to the PS4 version..

I sold my PS3 and copy of mlb 13 with no intentions of getting them back, and switched to FIFA after 13's release, which I never even liked the sport of soccer before this...just didnt like the changes they made..and most of what I didnt like was said it was changed to appeal more to the casual gamer...so my tough luck I guess..I chose to do something else instead than.

Great franchise though and only buy PS3 for the show...

It's not just that. Potential is another, and both Potential and pitch type (number pf pitches) could be edited in another baseball game, so nothing exclusive here. I've read some want to edit hot and cold zones.

I do feel the player editor is a bit poor. We should be able to bring pitch types down to 2 and ability to edit potential. They are 2 things that have been done before in other games and should be in this game.

I feel that once again MLB The Show is a great game. The only issue I have is the same problem with all versions of this game regarding RTTS. I have never liked the way the advancement goals are set up, I just don't like the fact that you are forced to increase skills just to advance. I feel that having advance goals are great for the mode but they should all be based on stats vs skill ratings.

If I get the urge to play a baseball game, I pop in MLB '12. I was disappointed with RttS this year especially with the way they altered the timing hitting interface. It's way too random for my tastes and the other hitting interfaces don't feel right to me. Not necessarily a knock on '13 but I find '12 more enjoyable.

If I remember correctly, there was a reason why they didn't allow us to edit potential. And the same with editing pitch types.. there is probably a reason for that too, maybe it's just a program issue.
I think the PS4 will allow more options like that. But as far as player editing, faces, accessories, ect., I think it is one of the best for sports games. It can only get better and have even more options with the PS4.
