Features have probably been set for a while...highly unlikely they even bothered with an unknown such as instant replay even if it was "announced" in November.

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
Whether expanded instant replay is in 14 won't really matter much for me as I always play with Umpire Errors (or whatever the setting is called) turned off. I know that having that grey area where an umpire can screw up a call is more realistic (as umpires are human and occasionally make mistakes), but I get annoyed with it when the call doesn't go my wayComment

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
That is true. In theory, unless you're trying to re-create the impossible(human/umpire inconsistency), there shouldn't even be a need to have that feature in these games(Madden included). An AI umpire should be right 100% of the time, just make the players do stupid things to give it a little uncertainty.
Man, I'm excited for this game. First time Playstation owner(PS4), excited to see what you guys have been on about all these years.Comment

You are in for a treat then if you haven't played THE SHOW, I didn't get a ps3 until 2011 and had been playing the 2k series and I'll tell you this THE SHOW will blow your mind! 2k's baseball series doesn't even come close to THE SHOW.Comment

If the PS4 version does end up coming out later than PS3/Vita. I wouldnt be surprised if its in for PS4.Comment

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
Exactly. In order for challenges to work in video games, the game has to deliberately insert a known bad call for the player to challenge. If the game truly screws up a call (i.e. not on purpose), it's not going to get reversed on a challenge. The AI doesn't actually look at replays to correct calls.Whether expanded instant replay is in 14 won't really matter much for me as I always play with Umpire Errors (or whatever the setting is called) turned off. The AI has access to all the info necessary to make the right call 100% of the time. When it doesn't, excluding purposely introduced bad calls, it's an error in coding and the AI won't actually detect the error by "looking" at a replay.
That's why I'd rather have the right call be made all the time.Comment

This is not entirely correct.Exactly. In order for challenges to work in video games, the game has to deliberately insert a known bad call for the player to challenge. -Incorrect calls are already in the game...but they don't have to be deliberately inserted ...just the CHANCE of them to happen.
-It wouldn't be an "error in coding" ....it would actually be coding(CORRECT coding)
-The fact that "the game" knows the call 100% of the time is irrelevant. For either you or the CPU AI manager. Your challenge is on you....just as IRL. You might call one on a good call or bad one. The fact that the CPU will review and make it's final call is a non issue with this.
With the CPU AI manager....there would just have to be something in place for them to challenge on both good and bad calls(just as you might)
(this is just my example and NOT what SCEA would use IF they even institue the replay in future versions.....I'm sure they would come up with something much better
)
We'll use a foul ball called down the line. Parameters could be drawn up that at a certain point close to the line...the CPU AI manager begins to look at a challenge. It would be a percentage(say 50/50) at point A from the line and would ramp up as the ball is actually closer to fair ball. So the CPU AI might use a bad challenge....might NOT challenge(a good or bad call) or correctly challenge.
I really don't see how if this is in the real MLB......you guys wouldn't want it in the game...but that's your opinion and I'm fine with it!
Just giving you my point of view.

What I would like to see is a cut scene more than anything. It would be like the home run review when the game gets it wrong, a manager challenges in a cut scene, and the umpires make the right decision. That way you can cut out a lot of the glitches and still have replay in the game.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
We are basically saying the same thing. When I said deliberately inserted I meant the bad calls are not actual "errors" on the part of the game. The game knows full well that it's making a bad call. I understand that the devs are programming certain probabilities to simulate human error.
Some people seem to think that a challenge system will allow them to rectify all bad calls including those resulting from a glitch.
It's just a matter of semantics. What I meant was that if the game made a bad call without already knowing that it's a bad call then no challenge system is going to correct it since the game actually perceives that it has made the right call. In such instances, the bad call is a the result of a glitch rather than the feature.
I do not know how prevalent these "glitchy" bad calls are in The Show as opposed to a game like Madden. I admit that much of my reasoning comes from my experience with Madden and NCAA and how posters perceive the challenge system in those games. The overall quality of The Show is certainly an indicator that this dev team should do a better job of handling this than the Madden and NCAA teams.
See my previous comment. If the game "thinks" the call is correct then your challenge is inconsequential since the review/challenge does not actually provide anymore info to the AI. Therefore, it seems pointless to generate bad calls for the player or CPU to challenge in the first place.-The fact that "the game" knows the call 100% of the time is irrelevant. For either you or the CPU AI manager. Your challenge is on you....just as IRL. You might call one on a good call or bad one. The fact that the CPU will review and make it's final call is a non issue with this.
The way I see it is that bad calls and reviews/challenges in real life are a necessary evil in real life due to the major human element involved in officiating. I would think that if it were possible, MLB, or any other league/sport for that matter, would jump at the chance to have every call be correct in the first place. This is actually possible in video games, excluding bad calls that are a result of some glitch rather than an algorithm implemented to generate the occasional bad call.
I do understand and respect why some want every nuance of real life replicated in these games. Artificial bad calls have just never appealed to me. Of course, I would imagine the option to always have correct calls will remain so no harm done.Last edited by mercalnd; 01-19-2014, 04:23 PM.Comment

I doubt this is in yet. Its going to take alot of coding and a ramp up in AI umpiring.Comment

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
I'm in the camp of not wanting replay in video games. I like a little give on the strike zone with variable umpires if it was more consistent throughout a game, but to me, the AI missing a call at first just to give the user a chance to use replay is bogus.

I think I would rather see the CPU throw a random balk in the game before I saw this element added. That's just me though!“The saddest part of life is when someone who gave you your best memories becomes a memory”Comment

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
Bad calls are already programmed into the game...
I'm sure they can program a few more instances where a play may be incorrectly called and come up with a few simple cutscenes and announcer dialog.
If not this year, I'm sure they'll have something next year.
And as SCEA always seems to do, they'll give us the option to have bad calls and challenges or to have everything called 100% perfectly.Comment

IDK....this **** happens IRL.
That's like making a racing game and having the AI drivers ALWAYS drive the perfect line.
Still a racing game.
Just missing an element.

Re: Really wish the new instant replay was put in place earlier.
@mercalnd
I disagree. I love that they put bad calls in the game and they give the umpires their own personalities.
It's not that difficult to program. Take an instance of where a bad call can happen. Close play at first or a line drive down the line. Now, when that instance occurs, generate a random number. Maybe on a scale of 1-100. If the umpire is considered "great" then any number 1-99 that is generated...he makes the right call. If the number is 100, then he makes a bad call. Maybe if the umpire is considered "bad" or less than average, numbers 1-90 are correct calls and 91-100 are bad calls.
That's just an example, the numbers can be tweaked to get a realistic representation of how calls are made in MLB.
Now on glitched plays, well...there is not much you can do about it.Comment
