Re: PCI Change
I guess I don't understand the point of the change.
Power hitter's that strike out a lot or do not have a high BA shouldn't have huge PCI's just because of their power. If I use someone like Jose Bautista or Jay Bruce I should expect them to strike out a lot. Now their PCI size will be bigger than it should.
I doubt it makes a difference honestly, but I don't see this as being anything innovative right now. I thought it was fine.
Besides I've always found power the most important attribute, because it directly correlates on how fast the ball comes off the bat. I could usually hit .300+ with guys that have 80+ power and 50-60 contact even with their smaller PCI's.
That is just my opinion though...Comment

Re: PCI Change
I don't see how it can be a visual change and directly tied into increasing OPS.
That makes no sense at all. Is the PCI now going to be misleading and lie for someone that has high power?Comment

Re: PCI Change
I thought this post explained it pretty well:
Just to give more background information..Some people were pointing out that the "best" hitters weren't always getting assigned the biggest PCI. I.e. the PCI represents contact/vision, leaving power out. This worked fine for the hitting engine, but visually it makes more sense to include power because this is how the pitcher thinks when he decides how to pitch to the hitter. Only the more sophisticated users understood why the PCI was higher for contact hitters than pure power hitters, and this change hopefully helps resolve that confusion for everyone.
This style of pci size relates to how much "threat" the batter is generating at the plate, leading the pitcher to pitch around. Power hitters also cover more of the plate than their contact alone allows, because in crude terms they can turn a bad hit into a good hit (ex. a hit to the warning track becomes a home run). In technical terms though, the hitting engine doesn't think this way. It first gives contact hitters better contact, and then adds on power for the extra swing speed of power hitters. The old PCI represented this concept faithfully, but it's arguably harder to explain than the new system.Comment

Re: PCI Change
The size of the PCI will represent higher OPS better than it has in the past, but it has more to do affecting the way a pitcher approaches a hitter than it does with anything else.
If you're thinking of the PCI as if it were an old school hitting cursor, then I could see where people may be confused about the change. And while the PCI does exhibit some characteristics of a hitting cursor, you would probably be better off thinking of it as a representation of a batter's overall hitting ability. And given the amount of value power has in offensive ability, the PCI was tweaked visually, to better represent offensive talent. Kind of in the same way that OPS generally is a better measure of overall offensive talent than just batting average alone.
I think the biggest reason for the change was to have the AI and player pitch to dangerous hitters more appropriately. I'm not 100% sure on all of this... But from what the devs said about the change, I think that is basically the gist of it.
So it really is more of a visual change that anything else. Now, more than everComment

Re: PCI Change
Yep sadly just another visual that adds nothing to real user input or skill but my only hope is it may seem more realistic and less of a forced feeling at times and not just a random shake of the dice for the sake of sim .Finally Roster share in NHL 22 ! Re: PCI Change
In other words, the PCI size now correlates more closely with OPS, rather than AVG. If you go through the lineup, the best hitters will have the biggest PCI, rather than just the "high contact" hitters. The hitting engine itself splits off Contact, Vision, and Power as individual components for evaluation and this change does not affect that.

Re: PCI Change
More like representing that they can kill the ball from anywhere in the zone (or maybe even out of it).
Think of the difference between, say, Vlad Guerrero and some light-hitting .230 scrub.
Vlad's PCI should be big - he could hit crap way out of the zone solidly, let alone what was in it. Same for other top hitters who can combine both power and bat control.
It's a better "hot zones", imo. Seems like it will represent holes in a guy's swing more relative to where he's looking.
Power being included makes sense because in this regard since it reflects more the strength/bat speed of the hitter, not just "where he can get perfect wood on the pitch".
As for it making a difference on the field - maybe not from the hitter's perspective, since it's still regarding the abilities. But it may do more to impact pitcher strategy, would could have an impact on the field in terms of production, pitch count and selection, etc."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment
