Yahoo! sports has an interesting article about Japanese/Iranian baseball player Yu Darvish. At a very young 21 years of age, he is already considered a legend in Japanese baseball with his impressive pitching performances for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. He’s getting tons of praise from his teammates and coaches as well as MLB players playing in the Japanese Leagues. He’s also notorious for his bad boy rock star image. Whenever Japanese newspapers and magazines plaster their covers with his picture sales start to go up. In a society that is characterized as humble and modest, he stands out from the crowd with his swagger. Also, his mixed heritage makes him unique in a country that is almost 100% homogeneous. While he isn’t going to appear stateside any time soon because Japanese players can only go into free agency after their ninth season, he is definitely being eyed by Major League clubs as a future prospect. And you’ll have a chance to see him next year as he will be pitching for Japan during the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Only time will tell if he’ll have a successful Major League career like fellow legendary Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki.

    As I wrote earlier...this guy's stuff is OFFthe chain...there ain't NOOOOO doubt about it.

I found out that he's under Japan's contract rules for at LEAST the next 6 or 7 years...but who knows? Sometimes, money does talk...But with the rock star/pop star following he has, nothing is a given.

Correct me if I am wrong...I believe he can sign with a MLB team IF he does so as an amateur. He must sign before he plays as a pro in Japan. I read an article about Darvish on a site called baseballguru.com.....it does a good job of covering the Nippon Baseball League, highlights the players...those electing to make the move to the MLB...prospects and does a fair job of clarifying their league rules etc etc. I may be mistaken, but I am thinking he can sign with an MLB team IF...he does so as an amateur.

75% of the Earths surface is covered by water......the remaining 25% is covered by Ichiro.

He has been playing for the Nippon Ham Fighters in the NPB since 2005 so he is already no longer an amateur (like Junichi Tazawa). I believe he wants to achieve certain milestones before he decides to move over to MLB anyway. I BELIEVE 200 wins in his Japanese career.
