Re: O.S. Full Minors 2010
lol i think that might be a little texas bias. he's nowhere near the top 100 in any rankings i've seen. had a pretty good year last year, but he's not a B potential especially considering how few B potentials there are this year. Definatly at solid C thoughComment

Re: O.S. Full Minors 2010
it seems like the Red Sox are getting away from the whole focusing on the Farm System idea that they started on in 2005. Instead of building around young players and home grown talent, they're starting to make the same mistakes signing guys like Mike Cameron, Marco Scutaro, Brad Penny, John Smoltz etc. Kinda disappointing, I like seeing guys that came up with the Sox stay with them and being locked up young and cheap IE Pedroia, Youk, Lester.
Really hoping Westmoreland gets better. I don't care if he never plays baseball again, and it would be selfish of any Red Sox fan to be thinking about that right now. It just sucks seeing a 19 year old kid face something like that.
All the free agents you mentioned are only signed short term and it's because they didn't have a better option in their system. Would you rather have Lowrie who barely played last year as the starting SS over Scutaro. Or Reddick in left and Jacoby in center instead of Cameron. I wouldn't although Reddick has been tearing it up this spring but he struggled badly in AAA and with the sox last season. Yes Penny and Smoltz ended up being bad signings but they didn't give them a ton of money and they got rid of them after 3 months. Now the staff is loaded and our best prospect is Kelly who will probably start in Portland this year and could be ready to contribute sometime next year. Same with Iglesias who will hopefully be ready when Scutaro's contract expires after 2011.
It takes a lot of skill, intelligence and hard work by scouts and the front office to draft and develop players but you also need luck and the sox just haven't been lucky the last couple years with most of their high level prospects. We still don't really know what to expect out of Buchholz and he threw a no hitter in 2007. I'm quite sure the sox would love to have a player or two that they've developed ready for the big leagues every season but it just doesn't work like that. Luckily they have the money to sign almost any free agent they want to fill in the holes when they don't have young players ready to play there.
I'm not trying to rip you or anything I just disagree that signing Cameron and Scutaro was a mistake or that their changing their philosophy and just throwing money at every other free agent. They've just had some bad luck with prospects the last season or two and they've had to fill holes in the lineup they thought they might be able to take care of with their own prospects.
Also hoping for a quick and full recovery for Westmoreland and hopefully he's back to just being a normal 19 year old kid soon and maybe eventually he can start thinking about playing baseball again.Comment

Yeah Solid C is probably about right. I was just using a comparison to be a little obnoxious.:wink:Comment

State your argument of why you think Kyle Russell is a B prospect compared to Lars Anderson.Comment

Re: O.S. Full Minors 2010
2. Played against Russell in HS for 2 years. Also saw Jay Bruce in HS and Russell was more impressive considering he was a twig at 6'5 170 hitting the ball 420ft to all parts of the field.
I did pull up stats for Russell in LoA and his 180 SO's in 133 games is reason alone to make him a C. You are the scout and I am out of the game, you know a thing or two more about prospects and comparing them to say the least. The more I think about it C is probably about right on a relative scale of other top prospects. His power potential is most definately an A, the dude is capable of being a 30 plus HR guy at the major league level, but on the other hand he is average at best at other aspects of the game.
Not trying to argue, keep up the good work. ignore my ignorance. My original comment was kind of a joke.Comment

1. I don't know anything about Lars other than his minor league stats (which we both know don't mean much at all)

Re: O.S. Full Minors 2010
"After excelling with three high-quality pitches as a rookie, Tommy Hanson has improved his fourth, the changeup, to the point where he’s confident throwing it in almost any situation. This is bad news for hitters.
“It’s a lot better pitch now, and I’m a lot more confident with it,” Hanson said after allowing one run and six hits in five innings of a 4-2 win against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium."
Someone let me know if I'm putting this stuff in the wrong placeComment
