Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
It would be nice if someone from SCEA, upon reading this thread, would pass along to those at SCEA who are making the in-game roster our comments that the particular in-game prospects (Jeremy Hellickson, Domonic Brown , Aroldis Chapman ,Desmond Jennings, Mike Minor, Freddie Freeman, Chris Sale, and Kyle Drabek) who are noted above should be "A" prospects.
For the same reason there are three Detroit prospects who I had not listed previously (as they should be included in the in-game roster) who should be assigned the following potential ratings:
Dan Schlereth - B
Andy Oliver - B
Robbie Weinhardt - C

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Just a suggestion on Montero, If you make him an A then his defense will go up as an A, as well. #1 He will never be a gold glover a matter of fact defensively he is Jack Cust. Just keep that in mind when rating him..lower his defensive ratings so that an "a" rating doesnt bring it up too much.Comment

For the defensive ratings...I will break it down to poor fielder/average/above average/elite....you would see the attribute(s) that will correspond to that(this would be the players FINAL stat projection)...you will then follow the number back in years to his current age and potential....you will use that number for his current attribute.
It will be simpler than it sounds....and keep everything uniform.
You only need to use the chart if you don't feel confident in figuring out dropping the ratings from what you think he will BECOME and subtracting the probable potential growth numbers for the number of years he will gain points....yourself.
For instance.....you want a 22 y.o. B player to eventually be 80 contact points. He has 5 years(could be 4 or 6.....the game is not exact on this all of the time) of 6-8 point growth(average).....so to start him at 40-46 points would be logical.
If a guy is young...AND ready to get the call....AND is already going to hit for a good average power at the MLB level....go ahead and rate him closer to his final numbers(say leaving one year of growth)....that's not that big of a deal.
On the same note...as itw mentioned...if a guy is very deficient ......and speed and BR aggression would also be big here....don't be afraid to rate them VERY LOW in these areas.
I'm petitioning Kolbe to break the current "everything grows at the same rate" pattern for '12. Speed...should be constant. So should defense ...UNLESS you specifically train that player EXTRA in that area.....
There are a bunch of things I'll be asking him to change about progression.

Hopefully potential grades are also further divided into areas so guys like Montero can grow in monsters at the plate, but still be weak in the field.Comment

For the Royals
Player-Position-Potential-11Level
Eric Hosmer--1B--(A+)--AA
Wil Myers--RF--A--AA

Mike Montgomery--SP--(A-)--AA
John Lamb--SP--(A-/B+)--AA
Danny Duffy--SP--(B+)--AA/AAA
Jake Odorizzi--SP--(B+)--HiA
Chris Dwyer--SP--B--AA
Brett Eibner--CF--B--HiA
Christian Colon--SS/2B--B--AA
Aaron Crow--SP--B--AA
Chelsor Cuthbert--3B--B--LoA
Jeremy Jeffress--RP--B--AAA/MLB
Johnny Giavotella--2B--(B-)--AAA
Robinson Yabmati--SP--(B-)--ROOK
Tim Melville--SP--(B-/C+)--HiA
Yordano Ventura--SP--(B-/C+)--ROOK

Clint Robinson--1B--C+--AAA
David Lough--LF--C+--AAA
Jeff Bianchi--SS--C+--AA
Will Smith--SP--C+--AA/HiA
Jason Adam--SP--C+--LoA
Crawford Simmons--SP--C--HiA
Derek Robinson--CF--C--AAA
Michael Antonio--SS--C--LoA
Paulo Orlando--RF--C--AAA
Jorge Bonafacio--CF--C--Rook
That is a pretty good list of the "prospects." There are some other guys that are minor league filler that I'd probably put in the game, but they are "D" type players (Irving Falu, Edgar Osuna, Nick Francis, etc)Comment

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Yes, hopefully we'll see a different approach to potential/progression in 2012. Some physical abilities need be relatively constant & stable (at least until regression kicks in) -- speed, arm strength, range (assuming they have something like this). On the field improvement should come from the skill ratings associated with them (eg, baserunning ability, fielding skills w/training, etc).
Hopefully potential grades are also further divided into areas so guys like Montero can grow in monsters at the plate, but still be weak in the field.
AS/Def Abilty(range really...a guy can work on his glove work...but that should only come up with SPECIFIC training IMO...not "natural progression") Speed/baserunning aggression should all be constants(slight changes maybe) until a certain age and then degrade.

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
I agree nothing makes that point more than pitchers arm strengths. Sure Mechanics and some things may improve it slightly but you dont got from 85mph fastball to a 96 mph. The other thing is starter to reliever conversion. In most cases when you go from a starter to reliever, it bumps up your mph.Comment

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Agreed, many items such as arm strength, speed, range/reaction really do not change a whole lot over time.
What I am saying is that either you run like a deer or you don't. Either you have a cannon for an arm or you don't.
Another one I would argue, is Plate Vision. The one that determines how much of the plate you cover by moving the target of the bat.
Players always become better dicisplined at the plate over time. (Plate Discipline) but (Plate Vision)actually being able to "see" the ball is something that may grow a little over time, but for me it ranks in either you can, or can not see the ball well. This is Plate Vision correct?Comment

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Knight,
I just sent you a copy of my sheet for Detroit minor league outfield defense. I included the decoder ring this time. :-) I hope you find it interesting. This is the last of my summaries.
I agree that certain factors like speed and arm strength do not change or at least do not change much. I have seen reports of very young pitchers (17 or 18) where they talk about more "projection" (perhaps 2 or 3 more mph) on their fastball, but for many, especially in their mid 20s or older, you never hear such comments in their scouting reports. Speed is even less changeable. No amount of training could turn a Prince Fielder into a gazelle.

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Cincinnati Reds Top 5 Prospects for 2011 (In no particular order)
1) Aroldis Chapman, LHP: Is he a starter or a reliever? Either way he will be excellent if he stays healthy.
2) Devin Mesoraco, C: I think the breakout is real. The guy could be the everyday starter next year.
3) Yonder Alonso, 1B: Above average hitter, but blocked positionally.
4) Billy Hamilton, 2B-SS: Could use more patience, but I love everything else about him. I think its easy to say he is the fastest prospect in baseball speed wise.
5) Yasmani Grandal, C: One of my favorites from the 2010 draft, power, plate discipline, and I like his defense more than some people do.
All 5 of these guys are making Top 75 Prospect Lists almost everywhere. Hamilton and Mesoraco are the guys Im most pumped about. Yorman Rodriguez cant be too far behind. He is going to be a nice young player too!! Good time to be a Reds fan.

To KJWilliams
I would love to have the same problem the Reds have here in Detroit. Actual major league level players stuck in the minors because the major league team is flooded with talent.
I guess my question would be, do they plan on moving Alonso to a different position?Last edited by jethrotull; 02-07-2011, 03:00 PM.Comment

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Am I the only one having trouble finding scouting reports on minor league players?
Do you guys have any advice? Because all I can seem to find are Top 10 and 20 lists of teams prospects that aren't very detailed.Comment

Re: Operation Sports Full Minors 2011 - Recruiting
Baseball America releases a TOP 30 prospects handbook every Jan/Feb. I used that last year to take a look at some of the ratings. I found it to be the most in-depth.
What are you guys going to do with 17 year old prospects such as Danrys Vasquez in the Tigers system? He signed a contact over a million bucks at 16 last year.
Making a 17 year old prospect is a bit much, but only the real good ones get offered that kind of money.Comment
