    MLB 2012 - 1996 Classic Roster Project

As it's getting closer to that time of year again, my anticipation for MLB 12 continues to grow.

One of my favorite things to do in any sports game is use classic rosters, baseball especially.

This year I fully intend to recreate the 1996 season to the best of my ability.

Below is what you can expect from these rosters:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    Ratings

I try to make the ratings as accurate as possible. Guys like Mo Vaughn won't be receiving a 65 in speed and a 60 in baserunning ability. Also, guys who had 800 career at bats and hit 4 career home runs won't be getting higher than a 6 or 7 in power.

    Vitals

I will be raiding the player vault to make up for what I lack in face editing skills, but if any vitals can be changed to make the proper height/weight and age needs of the 96 season, I will do it.

    Appearances

As I said earlier, I am below average to average at creating faces, so I will be relying on the player vault, but you won't see players created in the wrong race, hair color, facial hair (if any) etc... I want to go for accuracy here.

    Roster Accuracy

I used Baseball-Reference to get each teams starting lineups from the year. If a player played with multiple teams, I placed him with the team he played the most games with. For example, Cecil Fielder played over 80 games with the Tigers in 96 before being traded to the Yankees. I kept Cecil on the Tigers.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't promise perfection, especially when creating pitchers, but I will use the resources here at OS and the web to try and get as close to perfection as possible. Pitching stances and Batting stances for lesser known players will probably not be spot on, but I truly am open to constructive criticism.

That being said, I do fully intend to complete these rosters. I can't promise they will be done in a timely manner, but I can't promise they won't be either. I would not be so cruel as to promise these and then not make an effort to deliver

I have already compiled all of the teams and the rosters I will be putting in the game. If there are any errors spotted or suggestions you would like to make, please feel free. I also posted some info about the season in general.

I look forward to finishing these.

Thanks man. The Mariners are actually the reason I wanted to do this. Everybody wanted to take BP like Jr. back then and turn their caps around. Of course Randy Johnson and his freakish arm speed mixed with the emergence of a stud named A-Rod made the Mariners a favorite for a lot of us.

Weird to see a Rockies lineup without Todd Helton. Seems like he's been around since before baseball (although he WAS drafted in 95 and was in their system already).

Good luck on the project. I tried doing this with Madden and it turned into quite a time-consuming ordeal.

Why not just put players on the correct opening day rosters so we can play franchise with these?

Thanks. It will be worth if other people enjoy these as much as I will.

Well, for the most part, these rosters are not too far from opening day. A lot of the big trades (Fielder, Neagle, etc...) didn't happen until the end part of the year anyways. There may be a few differences between these and true OD rosters, but nothing too major to my knowledge. Besides, a guy who played 20 games with one team, 10 with another, and finished the year with a 3rd team for the majority of the season is more likely to be remembered on team 3 than the one he played 10 games with. At least that is how I look at it.

I have officially started the process this morning. So far, so good appearance wise.

I almost have all of the Twins position players done and would like to have the full team completed tonight.

              I will post pictures later.

                The Twins are done.

It took around 4-5 hours to complete, but that's one team down.

Below are some pictures of the team, albeit a very weak team that year

                ===============================================

                Ron Coomer staying ready

                Chuck Knoblauch doing the same

Paul Molitor ready to add another hit

Re: MLB 2012 - 1996 Classic Roster Project

So far I have the Twins done, the Royals a few pitchers away from being done, and a few star players added or created.

After creating both the Twins and Royals, I was fearing my power ratings were too low, due to my own rating system. Granted that a lot of players on both teams hit less than 40 HR's in their careers or no more than 3 in a full season, I still felt like I should increase their power.

I decided to sim a season with the ratings the way they were, and I am glad I did.

The Twins seen only a few players hit double digit HR's that season (just like in real life that year) and had their team leader with 18, even after injury time.

I feel really good about my rating system now. When some sluggers, or better HR hitters come around, I know a true star player or slugger will outshine the rest and the guys who were in the league 2-4 years will play like the caliber of player they were.

I have also created and uploaded Frank Thomas. I noticed no one else has, so I thought someone may enjoy mine. Check the player vault if you're interested.

You have Eddie Murray listed as DH for both the O's and the Indians. If you don't pick a discrete point in time (e.g. Opening Day) you will continue to run into this problem.

Looking forward to the release. Is the Kingdome in the game?
