    Re: The best ratings calculator?

Yeah, Mike Trout broke that calculator. Using his current stats, he should have

    Contact RT: 102
    Contact LT: 96
    Power RT: 71
    Power LT: 65

The power numbers don't seem too bad but obviously the contact is messed up. Doesn't help Trout is hitting .356 though.

    Meanwhile, Harper is at:

    Contact RT: 69
    Contact LT: 60
    Power RT: 56
    Power LT: 37

Jimbo, any chance you could release your formulas for at least these four ratings?

      Re: The best ratings calculator?

Hey guys. Sorry about the lack of explanation.

The first four tabs are all of the calculators. The User Input tab at the end hasn't been updated yet. I may do that eventually. It wouldn't be too difficult.

The first tab is Batter Ratings. With this, you can get ratings for any hitter (or at least almost) that has played in the MLB from 2010-2012. Tab 2 is the same thing but for pitchers. Tab 3 is for the ZiPS projections that were done at the beginning of the season for batters. I included this because some minor league players ARE included in tabs 3 and 4. So tab 3 is beginning of the year ZiPS projections for hitters and tab 4 is for pitchers. In tabs 1 and 2, the updated ZiPS projections are used so no minor league players are included.

To use the calculator, simply select cell A2 and use the dropdown box. You can also just type the players name in, but it has to be typed in exactly as it is in the dropdown box.

My figures (I'm only doing batting) are quite similar to yours, so at least I know I am not completely off the mark with my formulas etc. especially seeing as this is my first go at this.

        Michael Bourn
        (mine - yours)
        ConR 90 -- 76
        ConL 85 -- 56
        PowR 23 -- 22
        PowL 20 -- 25
        Bunt 28 -- 27
        Dbnt 33 -- 62
        Visn 44 -- 54
        Disc 47 -- 64
        Clut 90 -- 72
        Dura 94 -- 98
        Spd 86 -- 97
        Reac 49 -- 84
        Fld 96 -- 81
        BrAb 82 -- 83
        BrAg 87 -- 90

Like I said above, I am struggling with the Arm Accuracy/Strength and I am really not sure what to do with that.

I've updated a few teams with my ratings and played some games but I guess I really need to just go the whole hog now, although I may just wait until the end of the regular season before I start this.

I suspect I will be constantly tinkering with my calculator between now and then anyway!!
Hey man, instead of working on one solo, why don't we just work together? You are welcome to make any changes you want to the calculator, update, input your own ratings.

As far as the ratings are concerned, I will say this: I wouldn't really argue much with Bahnzo's formulas. They consistently produce incredibly accurate results for ratings. Triple Threats are also pretty good.

I think you are using it wrong.

Primarily use the first two tabs. The first 2 include ratings for 2010-2012 as well as ratings based on ZiPS Updated Projections for 2012. Use tabs 3 and 4 just for minor league players. This is also where you could do some user inputs. For batters, you just need to update the numbers next to the rating. So if you want to input contact, just type into contact l and contact r the hits and at bats stats for the player. Rating will automatically change.

For Mike Trout, I get (if I use averages)

        Contact RT: 67
        Contact LT: 58
        Power RT: 54
        Power LT: 51

        For Harper, I get:

        Contact RT: 56
        Contact LT: 69
        Power RT: 58
        Power LT: 50

For contact my formula is (BABIP * 1000) / 4 and for power it is just (ISO *1000)/ 4

I then use a 3yr weight to work out the final figure.

Unfortunately, when you get a player with only one years worth of data it can put things off a little.

This does give a higher contact rating and lower power rating than most of the rosters and formulas I have seen though.

What do you think of working together? I am pretty good with excel (although I am still having trouble with the auto updating). There is no reason for us to not have a community ratings calculator.

This would allow Knight's team, if they chose to do so, to quickly and efficiently edit ratings in their later sets.

As I said, make any changes you want. But give the calculator a try. I really don't think it could be done much better, especially not from scratch. I am fine adding your ratings in as well. The same way I included ratings for both Triple Threat and Bahnzo, I can do for you.

            Let me know.

              Re: The best ratings calculator?

Thanks for the offer but having put the work into my now almost finished calculator from scratch (all 18 work sheets of it!!), I think I will just stick with it.

Being a newbie to the sport and MLB the Show, I have found working on the calculator a good way to learn about baseball, sabremetrics etc. and I must admit, I prefer to have the stats for each individual year, rather than have them grouped together.

Also having read a few threads on here, I am of the mind that too many cooks....

I have included Bahnzo's formulas as well as Triple Threat's (a well known poster on here that did a TON of research on the ratings a few years back).

I haven't found a very good way to do the fielding/arm/speed ratings so I used some that seanjeezy posted.

Let me know if you have any questions or have trouble using it. ZiPS is projection based for this season, but I also allow you to view ratings based on a composite of 2010-2012.

                  Any suggestions are appreciated.
I can't get the one you attached in this post to work on my Excel. It says it is an XLSX file, and when I try to open it in Excel, it's just symbols.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm pretty sure it is cause you have an old version of excel. Just go to google and type in your excel version and xlsx. You need to download a plugin you can get directly from Microsoft.

Basically, it is Average for TripleThreat, AVG for Bahnzo, AVG for Bahnzo and TT for ZiPS, 2010-12, and AVG for all of them. Basically an AVG of the multiple averages.

I could put it together if I could just find a site that would allow me to easily copy the ratings and keep them all in their columns. A modifier could then be applied for the minor leagues. I need minor league splits and a site that allows me to copy them.

If anyone has any suggestions, criticisms, etc. I'd greatly appreciate it. My hope is for this to get out there enough that mass re-rates are possible at a fraction of the time like Bahnzo's allowed. The thing that makes this calculator great though is I can expand it to include more people's ratings. So if you come up with your own formula, change it. You can do whatever you want with it and if you have questions, ask.
